Elite Toronto goalie gets the night off
Frederik Andersen will get a well-deserved rest as Garret Sparks will get the call for the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. No matter who is in net for the Leafs, one thing is certain - they always see an abundance of shots. Toronto is allowing the fourth-most shots against per game (33.9 SA/G). Sparks is an easy call on FanDuel at a salivating $7,600 given the overwhelming likelihood of the win. On DraftKings ($8,300), it is a tougher decision given the appropriate price tag, but Sparks has been strong in his last two starts, allowing just a goal while making 72 saves. He's a core play.
Cheap Backup Goalie in Prime Matchup
Let me clarify that I'm not a huge advocate of Garret Sparks the player. I think he's an average NHL talent who will primarily be a backup in this league. Having said that, I love the matchup for Sparks. The Ducks are starting to get healthier, but still think they are a middling team. Anaheim has the 2nd fewest goals scored this season with just 44 goals in 20 games (2.2 per game). By comparison, Sparks' own team is averaging 3.6 goals per game to lead the league. The Maple Leafs have been the NHL's best team on the road this year with an 8-1-0 record away from home.
2017-18 AHL Goalie of the Year looking to take it to the next level
Garrett Sparks may have picked up the win last time out against the Chicago Blackhawks, but he gave up six goals in the process, including two in the last 90 seconds as Patrick Kane gave it his all. Sparks was voted the top goaltender in the American Hockey League for the 2017-18 season as he put together a sterling 1.79 goals against average and .936 save percentage. While his strong play with the Toronto Marlies has yet to translate to the National Hockey League, Sparks will be backed by the best offense (4.84 goals/game). Additionally, Sparks checks in as the biggest favorite of the night and is erroneously priced at $7,100 on FanDuel. Toronto goalies always see a good number of shots, and the Los Angeles Kings' 2.20 goals per game is almost rock bottom in the league.
