Heath Fillmyer Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Reverse split gives us a nice value play at Catcher
Heath Fillmyer has really struggled with same-handed batters (.362 wOBA, 49.5 Hard%) in his short major league tenure. Though they don't have much power, the Pirates do have two RHBs who hit RHP well: Starling Marte (115 wRC+, .174 ISO) and Francisco Cervelli (128 wRC+, .178 ISO). The latter would seem a nice value at a tough position for less than $4K on either site with the Pirates projected at a formidable 4.51 implied runs by oddsmakers. While Fillmyer has been much better against LHBs (.290 wOBA), xwOBA raises that mark 46 points. An affordable Pittsburgh stack is not out of the question.
Well projected, but not a very deep lineup
Heath Fillmyer has three quality starts among his last six, but has also allowed at least four runs in each of his other three. He has just a 14.1 K% with an 88.3 mph aEV, but has kept the ball on the ground around 50% of the time against batters from either side of the plate. Yet, he has a sizable platoon split with RHBs (.380 wOBA) well above LHBs (.288 wOBA), though xwOBA does raise that latter mark 43 points. The Twins offer a lineup that has Robbie Grossman (84 wRC+, .098 ISO vs RHP) batting cleanup, yet oddsmakers grace them with the third highest implied run line on the board (4.81). Jorge Polanco (130 wRC+, .132 ISO), Eddie Rosario (125 wRC+, .218 ISO) and Jake Cave (117 wRC+, .213 ISO) are the only above average hitters against RHP in the Minnesota lineup.
A K-BB below 3% and a terrible bullpen
Heath Fillmyer has a 3.13 ERA more than two runs below his SIERA in a small sample due to a .250 BABIP and 9.1 HR/FB to go along with his 2.6 K-BB%. His platoon splits have some oddness to them too. He's held batters from either side of hte plate on the ground 50% of the time, but RHBs have hit the ball twice as hard as LHBs (46.3 Hard% to 23 Hard%), giving him a reverse split thus far. He's not going to sustain a .253 wOBA against LHBs and the Kansas City bullpen is terrible. Toronto bats are of interest here. Each of the top four. Curtis Granderson (105 wRC+, .203 ISO) and Devon Travis (80 wRC+, .122 ISO) out of affordability at the top of the lineup. Justin Smoak (128 wRC+, .247 ISO) and Teoscar Hernandez (120 wRC+, .253 ISO) due to proficiency against RHP.
Cheap exposure to the middle of tonight's top projected lineup
The Cubs are currently the high team on the board at 5.49 implied runs in Kansas City. Heath Fillmyer (14 K%, 5.14 SIERA) has generated a lot of weak contact (3.2% Barrels/BBE, 28.4% 95+ mph EV) on the ground (53.7%) to compensate for other inefficiencies, but has actually allowed same-handed batters a .376 wOBA and 51.1 Hard% in his four major league starts. He is backed by one of the worst bullpens in baseball and has gone more than five innings just once so far. A pitcher with a 2.3 K-BB% against an offense with an 11.0 K-BB% vs RHP, this is a stacking situation, where players are looking for walks to turn into runs and big innings. The are giving daily fantasy players a gift with David Bote (168 wRC+, .206 ISO vs RHP) batting cleanup, offering cheap exposure ($3.7K DK, $2.6K FD) to the middle of the top lineup. Considering the reverse split so far, Javier Baez (123 wRC+, .260 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) might be the most interesting bat here, but is also easily the most expensive.
One big bat still left in this lineup
Heath Fillmyer hasn't allowed a lot of hard contact through his first three major league starts (27.1% 95+ mph EV, 56.5 GB%), but has just a 2.6 K-BB% in 27.1 innings (some in relief). He had just a 6.2 K-BB% in 13 AAA starts as well this season and has never had a ground ball rate above 47% at any minor league level, so we don't yet know if the batted ball profile is real. The Twins don't have a ton of offense left in this lineup, but Eddie Rosario (152 wRC+, .289 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) is one of the best in the league and one players definitely want to look at tonight for a team with the second highest run line on the board (5.53). Jorge Polanco (152 wRC+, .217 ISO) has some pop as well, though his xwOBA is nearly 100 points below his actual mark against RHP over that same one year span.
Increasing run line against a terrible bullpen
The Tigers have suddenly shot up the board and now have a top five implied run line (5.34) in Kansas City tonight. The Royals are throwing a bullpen game and that bullpen is terrible (4.83 FIP, 3.7 K-BB% last 30 days). Heath Fillmyer has been used mostly out of the pen for the Royals (multiple innings each time) and has a -1.5 K-BB% in 15.2 innings, while not being that much more impressive in 13 AAA starts (6.2 K-BB%). The Tigers have just three competent bats against RHP over the last calendar year: Leonys Martin (108 wRC+, .159 ISO), Nick Castellanos (115 wRC+, .214 ISO) and Jeimer Candelario (109 wRC+, .188 ISO). All three are in the top half of the order at a low cost on FanDuel. Nobody else in the lineup is above an 80 wRC+ or .150 ISO against RHP over the last calendar year.
Heath Fillmyer will start in place of Jakob Junis (back inflammation) on Sunday
Junis has officially been placed on the 10-day disabled list, and he will not make his scheduled start for the Kansas City Royals and will not pitch in Sunday’s matchup against the Boston Red Sox due to lower back inflammation. He’ll be replaced on the mound Heath Fillmyer, who, like Junis, is a right-handed pitcher, so his presence on the bump won’t alter the projected outlook of the Red Sox hitters in any significant fashion, but still be sure to double check projections for any notable changes prior to submitting lineups for this afternoon’s main slate.
