Cheap Minnesota RHBs, San Diego LHBs with strong matchups could provide paths to expensive arms
The Colorado Rockies are once again the top projected team by Vegas (6.27 runs). They're facing a decent pitcher, who allows a lot of hard contact in Vince Velasquez tonight though. It's tough to predict how any of his starts are ever going to turn out, but he's pitched well in two of three starts since returning from the DL and the Rockies have just an 80 wRC+ (15.0 K-BB% vs RHP). Seven more teams have an implied run line above five tonight, making for 30% of the slate above that number. Outside of Coors, although a small sample size, the Astros may have the top offensive matchup against Cesar Valdez, who has allowed a 90 mph aEV in 27 innings. RHBs have a .459 wOBA and 54.9 Hard% with just 37.3% of contact on the ground. The Astros are implied for 5.1 runs. RHBs have a .364 wOBA and 34.9 Hard% against Travis Wood since last season, but Pittsburgh is a tough park for RHBs. It's not as bad on LHBs and they have a .355 wOBA and 35.5 Hard% against Ivan Nova since last season. Nova's strikeouts are up, which may make him useful against a high strikeout offense tonight (25.3 K% vs RHP), but LH Padres should play here. Over Nova's last 10 starts, LHBs have a .413 wOBA and eight HRs. The Padres don't have many LHBs with much power, but Yangervis Solarte (.180 ISO vs RHP since 2016) is back and perhaps Hector Sanchez (.270 ISO vs RHP this year) gets a start here. Everyone knows about Miguel Sano and Brian Dozier's prowess against LHP and RHBs have a .351 wOBA (34.4 Hard%) against Martin Perez since last season. The path to higher priced arms and bats tonight might go through the cheaper RH portion of their order. Eduardo Escobar actually has a higher ISO vs LHP than Dozier this year (.225 to .212) and costs less than $3K on FanDuel. Robbie Grossman (143 wRC+ vs LHP since last season) is affordable on either site ($3.6K DK/$2.8K FD).
Affordable San Diego bats at Coors (5.28 implied runs) could help pay for Kershaw
While the Rockies, just as yesterday, are the only team implied above six runs, more than half a run above the next highest team (Yankees 5.62), the difference is that 17 of 30 offenses tonight have a run line above 4.75 runs, which should spread out offense. Further thought may keep a lot of those high cost bats low owned on a pitching deficient slate where Clayton Kershaw could be some monstrous chalk tonight. Other considerations are that the Rockies are facing a pitcher who allows a ton of hard contact (15.1% Barrels/BBE), but Dinelson Lamet has a 30.9 K% and may be in some lineups at $7K or less, muting the ownership of Colorado bats. There's also the possibility that the Yankees are still suffering hangover effects of a marathon weekend in Boston, having been shut down by Adalberto Mejia. The Padres are the other team at Coors and 5.28 runs could be considered low for that park against Antonio Senzatela. With a 4.6 ERA/SIERA and just 7.0 SwStr%, there could/should be a concentration on San Diego bats, a stack of which could still net you Kershaw if done correctly. Wil Myers (111 wRC+, .205 ISO vs RHP since last season) is the highest costing bat on either site ($4.1K DK/$4K FD) with most projected starters well below that on FanDuel. Hector Sanchez was a last minute replacement last night. He homered and has a 118 wRC+, .275 ISO vs RHP since last season. Carlos Asuaje has a career 109 wRC+ vs RHP, but a 150 wRC+ (41.7 Hard%) since the break. Cory Spangenberg has a 243 wRC+ since the break. All three are LHBs and Antonio Senzatela has allowed a .335 wOBA to batters from that side this year.
Hector Sanchez now batting cleanup for SD, replacing the injured Austin Hedges
If you're able to pivot to Sanchez as a punt play, it's a viable move across the industry. He's hitting clean-up against German Marquez, and it's not all that often we're able to find solid value at the heart of the order in Coors.
Austin Hedges scratched Monday
Hedges has reportedly passed all of his concussion tests, but isn't feeling quite well enough to take the field just yet. Hector Sanchez will now catch and bat 4th, making him a viable punt play in Coors Field.
Austin Hedges scratched Saturday; Hector Sanchez replaces at catcher
Hedges has officially been scratched from the San Diego Padres lineup for tonight's game against the San Francisco Giants due to precautionary reasons. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Hector Sanchez, who will take over the catching duties and presumably bat seventh, though no official lineup has been released since the change. Assuming Sanchez will slot directly into Hedges's spot in the lineup, the remainder of the Padres previously confirmed batting order would remain unchanged.
