Hector Velazquez (illness) scratched Friday; William Cuevas will start in his place
Velazquez is battling an illness and consequentially won’t make his previously scheduled start for the Boston Red Sox in Friday’s home matchup against the NewYork Mets due to the aforementioned ailment. He’ll be replaced on the mound by William Cuevas, who, like Velazquez, is a right-handed pitcher, so his presence on the bump won’t alter the projections of the Mets hitters in any significant fashion. However, with Cuevas opening the game, this contest still sets up as a clear bullpen game for Boston, which was the play even if Velazquez were healthy enough to take the mound. Despite just a slightly above average K-BB (15.3%), the Rays have the second best bullpen FIP in baseball over the last month (2.97). The Red Sox (4.22 FIP, 14.6 K-BB%) and Mariners (4.35 FIP, 15.3 K-BB%) have more marginal pens. Seattle hasn't even confirmed a starting pitcher for tonight. Don't forget that with expanded rosters, managers can virtually matchup every single plate appearance if they wish.

DO NOT PLAY HECTOR VELAZQUEZ! Heck, you probably shouldn't even play this next guy I'm going to mention, but he sure makes for an intriguing GPP play. Velazquez will get the spot start for the Red Sox on Tuesday night but appears to be more of an "Opener" than traditional "Starter". Velazquez threw an inning both on the 6th and 7th and hasn't topped 52 pitches since April 14th. The most likely scenario here is that Velazquez throws 2-3 innings and then Jalen Beeks, who was just recalled by the Red Sox, throws 3-4 innings and is the pitcher of record. Four innings + the win isn't an ideal scenario for a pitcher priced up at $7K on DK, like Velazquez, but Beeks is only $4,500 and a double-digit fantasy performance pays off his price tag. It's not a risk I would take with a primary GPP lineup but about 10% exposure to Beeks on a multi-SP isn't completely insane. Oh, plus it's his birthday today! #NarrativeStreet
Yonder Alonso OUT against debuting Hector Velazquez
Hector Velazquez is a 28 year-old Mexican League product who signed with the Red Sox this year and has produced a 14.0 K-BB% at AAA due to a low walk rate (4.7%). A little bit of complicated math gets you to an 18.7 K%. He has kept the ball on the ground at a remarkably consistent rate between 51.9% and 52.8% everywhere he’s been over the last four years. Oakland does not have a bad offense (110 wRC+ at home, 100 wRC+ vs RHP), but the park favors pitching. On a potentially chaotic five game slate, he could prove useful in an SP2 role on DraftKings ($6.4K) due to the fact that no one has seen much of him yet on a professional stage. Additionally, Yonder Alonso, one of their top LHBs, sits tonight. It's difficult to recommend Oakland bats in this virtually unknown spot in a difficult park, except for Khris Davis, who seems to have few issues with big parks or RHP (122 wRC+, .275 ISO vs RHP since 2015).
