Hernan Perez Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Cheap With Potential Lineup Boos and Platoon Advantage
Lorenzo Cain left Thursday's game with an ankle injury which could result in Hernan Perez drawing a top five spot in the Brewers order in a favorable home matchup against Steven Brault and the Pirates. Perez is a neutral hitter at best but has shown some pop against left-handed pitching at times and will likely see run scoring + producing opportunities as Milwaukee has one of the top implied run totals on the slate (5.5).
Brewers in a great spot at home vs. Brault
Steven Brault has had a rough year so far with a 5.45 ERA / 5.77 xFIP / 5.46 SIERA, a 5.1% K-BB, 41.9% hard contact rate and 9.1% SwStr between the bullpen and rotation for Pirates. Brault also has a .373 xwOBA allowed and 89.3 MPH aEV on the year along with a 6.76 SIERA and -1% K-BB over the past 30 days. Christian Yelich (.453 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Mike Moustakas (.382), Ryan Braun (.340), Lorenzo Cain (.333) and Jesus Aguilar (.313) are all great options in the MIL projected order Sunday afternoon vs. Brault. Hernan Perez (.272) is just $3.7k on Draftkings and projects to hit near the top of the order. Aguilar is just $3.2k as he’s struggled so far in 2019 but had a 144 wRC+ vs. LHP in 2018. Manny Pina has a .550 xwOBA vs. LHP this year, though in just 15 PA. Cain and Braun should bat near the top of the order for the Brewers and are both available under $4.5k. The Brewers have a healthy 5.77 implied line Sunday afternoon vs. the Pirates.
Brewers in Another Great Spot
The Brewers will face Jason Vargas in Miller Park Sunday as Vargas is still somehow in the Mets’ rotation. Vargas has a 6.31 xFIP, 3.1 K-BB% and .394 xwOBA on the year while throwing a fastball 57% of the time that is averaging 85 MPH. Since 2018, Vargas has actually been equally bad vs. RHB and LHB in terms of xwOBA. Ryan Braun (.432 xwOBA vs. LHP since 2018), Christian Yelich (.408), Lorenzo Cain (.377), Jesus Aguilar (.366) and Hernan Perez (.316) are all options in the Brewers order today. Jesus Aguilar and Ryan Braun both have an xwOBA over .400 in the past 10 days and are batting 3-4 in the order. Aguilar is just $3.9k and will continue to be chalk as his price slowly adjusts from his slow start. The Brewers have a 5.16 implied line vs. Vargas and the Mets, which does feels a bit low given the matchup and environment.
Brewers Stack In Play Tonight
Brewers stacks have been a popular play early on in the year, and for good reason. But with their lineup missing top hitter Christian Yelich, and many other higher totals on the board, Brewers’ hitters could see depressed ownership Friday night. They will matchup with Steven Matz, who has actually been solid besides one major blowup. Still, Matz has a tougher time vs. RHB with a .327 xwOBA since 2017 compared to a .292 xwOBA vs. LHB. The Brewers will have 7 righties in their lineup tonight, and plenty of guys who are great hitters vs. LHP. Ryan Braun (.425 xwOBA vs. LHP since 2018), Lorenzo Cain (.373), Jesus Aguilar (.372), Yasmani Grandal (.349) and Mike Moustakas (.331) are all great options tonight. Hernan Perez (.316) is a nice value play at just $3.7k. Jesus Aguilar has been the hottest hitter of the bunch with a .555 xwOBA over the past 10 days, and is just $3.8k on DK due to his slow start to the year. The Brewers will also have the benefit of a hitter-friendly umpire in Dana DeMuth tonight in addition to hitter-friendly Miller Park. They carry a 4.49 implied line vs. Matz and the Mets Friday night.
Not the same pitcher and a dangerous spot
The 2018 version of Jose Quintana is not the same as in previous years and more specifically the AL version. RHBs have a .334 wOBA and .361 xwOBA against him this year with just a 39.8 GB%. He's pitching in a dangerous park against a dangerous lineup tonight. Lorenzo Cain (184 wRC+, .195 ISO) has just smashed LHP this season. Jesus Aguilar (136 wRC+, .272 ISO) hasn't been bad either. Even Ryan Braun (109 wRC+, .255 ISO) and Hernan Perez (117 wRC+, .242 ISO) have shown upside at a much lower price.
Favorable Environment
Hector Santiago is the owner of the 8th highest barrels/plate appearance (8.2) of all pitchers with at least 100 batted ball events. A result of those hard hit balls has been a ton of HRs allowed so far this season - 10 HRs in 44.1 IP. Perez is far from a wizard with the bat but he should bat towards the middle of the Brewers order and represents a cheap option in a favorable run scoring environment. As a side note, I typically try to avoid hitters with risk of getting pinch hit for, but Perez has been getting a full complement of ABs his last handful of starts.
Cheap Stack
Brandon Finnegan has had a rough go of it in the Big Leagues. Through 252 IP Finnegan has posted a 4.03 ERA (4.70 SIERA, 5.89 xFIP) and has given up 1.46 HR/9. Calling Great American Ball Park home doesn't help with Finnegan's HR problems as GAB is one of the best parks in the league for power. The Brewers make for a strong team stack but guys like Jesus Aguilar, Hernan Perez and Domingo Santana make for good cheap fillers if you're looking for ways to complete a higher priced stack.
Cheap With A High OBP and AVG
Two of my favorite value plays on the slate come from the same team. I really like Aguilar and Perez against the Reds tonight. In a small sample size, Brandon Finnegan has struggled with right-handed hitters. He has a 1.80 WHIP with a .346 wOBA against righties in 21.2 since 2017. He's giving up a lot of hard contact in three starts this season, and faces a right-handed heavy Brewers team. Like Aguilar, I think Perez makes a lot of sense on this slate. Perez hasn't shown the big power numbers against lefties, but he has a .293 AVG against them since the start of last season. At his price, I like his chances to get multiple hits.
A Very Interesting Sneaky Stack
I really like the Brewers as a sneaky stack tonight. They have an implied team total of 4.3 runs, which is considerably higher than you would expect against a pitcher like Jon Lester. This is a much improved offense with the additions of Yelich and Cain, and there is plenty of power upside in the RHBs. You can also get a value pick like Hernan Perez, who will likely start this evening. There's an added bonus for stolen base upside, too, given Lester's inability to hold runners on base.
Affordable Brewer RHBs could be a pathway towards more costly bats & premium pitching
Players looking to have it all tonight probably want to stack Astros with either Chris Sale or Corey Kluber. One potential pathway to get there may be affordable RH Brewers. Minnesota is a positive run environment that plays a bit better than neutral for RH power. Batters from that side of the plate have a .339 wOBA and 32.7 Hard% against Adalberto Mejia in his career. Ryan Braun, Jesus Aguilar, Domingo Santana and Keon Broxton all have an ISO above .200 against LHPs this year and all except Broxton also have a wRC+ above 125. Additionally, all except Braun have a hard hit rate above 50% over the last week. None are above $4K on DraftKings with Aguilar and Broxton below $3K on FanDuel. Going deeper into this lineup, Hernan Perez and Manny Pina have not shown much power, but both have a wRC+ above 100 against LHP this year at similarly low price points. Orlando Arcia has a 166 wRC+ and 47.4 Hard% over the last week. With several of those bats around or below $2.5K on FanDuel, players should be able to plug in Brewer bats around their Astros and still have enough for a premium pitcher left over.
