Isaiah Canaan will be released by the Suns

The Suns are releasing guard Isaiah Canaan, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, and he won't be available to play in the matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday evening. Canaan started 15 of Phoenix’s 20 games so far this season, but Devin Booker has started at point guard in recent games with Mikal Bridges starting at the shooting guard position. This news only provides more clarity to head coach Igor Kokoskov's new-look starting lineup and rotation, and it should enable Bridges to consistently see starters' minutes with only Jamal Crawford and Josh Jackson left to battle for reserve wing minutes. The departure of Canaan should also allow Ellie Okobo to step into the backup point guard role after a stint in the G-League led to him being a DNP for seven consecutive games.

Mikal Bridges will start ahead of Isaiah Canaan on Monday

Head coach Igor Kokoskov is playing the matchups and has opted to start Bridges at the shooting guard position in Monday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers, which slides Devin Booker over to point guard to handle a majority of the ball-handling responsibilities and sends Canaan to the bench to assume a reserve role. Bridges has logged at least 25 minutes in each of the last three games while Trevor Ariza was away from the team dealing with a personal matter, and he figures to see a similar minute workload in a homecoming game in Philadelphia this evening. Bridges only has a 17.3% usage rate on the year, but he remains cheap enough across the daily fantasy industry to be utilized as a punt option in tournaments.

Isaiah Canaan (ankle) will play Friday; Devin Booker (hamstring) probable

Canaan confirmed with reporters at shootaround that he will play in Friday's matchup against the Toronto Raptors after missing one game due to a sprained right ankle. Meanwhile, Booker has officially been listed as probable with a strained left hamstring, but he is still expected to be a game-time decision as the team wants to ensure he's able to go through pregame warmups without any setbacks prior to making a decision on his status. Canaan is likely to overtake his starting point guard role from Ellie Okobo, according to head coach Igor Kokoskov, while T.J. Warren will start at power forward for a second straight game. The projected Suns starting lineup has only played together for 3.2 minutes this season, but it's logical to assume that the offense will still run through Booker and Deandre Ayton with Warren pitching in as the secondary scoring option on the outside, as his 24.5% usage rate trails only Booker and Josh Jackson for the team lead among players that have logged more than 100 minutes on the year.

Devin Booker (hamstring) and Isaiah Canaan (ankle) out Wednesday; Josh Jackson (toe) probable

As expected, Booker will remain sidelined for Wednesday's matchup against the San Antonio Spurs due to a strained left hamstring, while Isaiah Canaan has officially been downgraded from questionable to out with a sprained left ankle. Josh Jackson has been upgraded to probable, and he appears on track to start a third consecutive game at the shooting guard spot, though he's largely been a disappointment thus far from a fantasy perspective. With Canaan sidelined, Ellie Okobo is expected to start at point guard and was stellar in 30 minutes of action on Sunday following Canaan's exit in the first quarter, which immediately vaults him towards the top of the board of value options on tonight's slate. Okobo has recorded a modest 20.6% usage rate with Booker and Canaan off the court this season, but he's still averaging 0.96 DraftKings and 0.87 FanDuel points per minute, thanks mainly to a significant increase in his assist rate in this scenario,

Waiting On News

Isaiah Canaan sprained his ankle in the game on Sunday, and he's questionable to play tonight. While we wait on that news, I wanted to talk about the point guard situation, with or without him tonight. In Canaan plays, he is a top value play on this slate with Devin Booker out tonight. When Canaan got hurt Sunday, Elie Okobo checked in for him and ended up playing 30 minutes. He started the second half and was on the floor to finish the game. If Canaan sits, Okobo will be in all my lineups tonight. This is a lot harder on FanDuel and FantasyDraft, but if you use Canaan in your guard spot on DraftKings, you can switch to Okobo if Canaan sits.

Let's Try This Again

The Suns had a terrible game against Golden State on Monday, but I'm willing to go back to the well on just about everyone here. Canaan played 26 minutes in that game and didn't see the floor at all in the fourth quarter. As long as he's the starting point guard, I'm going to keep playing him at his price. This game has the highest total on the slate, and it's a game I really want to target. Canaan is a cheaper way to get exposure to this matchup, and if the game stays close, he should play 30+ minutes, which is really solid for his price across the industry.

Load the Cannons

It's always tough to trust a two-game sample size, but with the new coach in Phoenix, we don't have a lot to go off of. Canaan has played 29 and 33 minutes in the first two games and could be one of the best value plays on the slate at his price if he's going to play 30 minutes. He's averaging .78 FanDuel points and .83 DraftKings and FantasyDraft points per minute. If Canaan hits anywhere near his average this season, he should 5-7x his salary across the industry. With Golden State playing a lot faster than Phoenix, we get a nice pace bump for the Suns tonight as well.

Isaiah Canaan to miss the rest of the season

Canaan suffered a gruesome injury in a win over the Mavericks last night. He was carted off the court on a stretcher last night and will now miss the remainder of the season with a fractured left ankle. Tyler Ulis will now serve as the primary backup at the point behind Devin Booker, with Josh Jackson and Troy Daniels both seeing a boost in minutes at the two guard.

Marquese Chriss (hip) ruled out Sunday; Josh Jackson (hip) and Isaiah Canaan (adductor) available to play

Chriss has officially been ruled out and won't play in tonight's game against the Indiana Pacers after previously being listed as doubtful on the Phoenix Suns' injury report with a strained right hip that has now forced him to miss two consecutive games, while Josh Jackson and Isaiah Canaan are available to play off the bench after their status was originally categorized as "hopeful" by interim head coach Jay Triano following Saturday's practice. Additionally, Davon Reed has been recalled from the G-League and will play, according to Triano, depending on the Suns' rotation, though he is still unlikely to see a substantial amount of minutes. In Chriss' absence, Dragan Bender will draw the start at power forward for the second time in as many games and is coming off of a stellar performance where he easily exceeded salary-based expectations in 32 minutes of action. Devin Booker will concede some of his newly-acquired ball-handling responsibilities to Canaan but still remains a solid option for all formats, along with Bender, on Sunday's minuscule two-game main slate.

Isaiah Canaan (adductor) listed out Sunday

Canaan has been listed as out in the media notes for tonight's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder after previously being listed as questionable on the Phoenix Suns' injury report and originally expected to play with a strained left adductor. Meanwhile, T.J. Warren remains questionable due to an illness that has already forced him to miss one game. Should Warren be ruled out, Josh Jackson would likely draw the start at small forward for the second time in as many games, despite a recent DNP-CD, and is coming off of two-straight solid performances in 23 minutes per game over that stretch. With Canaan and Warren unavailable Friday night, Tyler Ulis and Troy Daniels absorbed a majority of the available minutes, as they logged 35 and 30 minutes, respectively. Somewhat surprisingly, Jackson, Ulis, and Tyson Chandler have been the main beneficiaries with Warren and Greg Monroe off the court this season, each owning at least a +2.9% usage rate differential, while Ulis has seen his per minute production spike to 0.84 fantasy points on DraftKings and 0.83 on FanDuel in this scenario.
