J.B. Holmes Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
J.B. Holmes looks to stay hot
Currently ranked in the 8th position in the FedEx Cup standings J.B. Holmes enters this week's CJ Cup with hopes of continuing his solid start to the 2019 season. This former Ryder Cup team member looks ready to break out of a two-year slump and is a very intriguing value option for the week. With four par fives in play this week, players with distance like Holmes should be in play this week. Holmes played great tee to green last week and has the par five scoring prowess to pay off his salary regardless of finishing position. Holmes is 28 under par over his last 8 rounds of golf, and with somewhat of a depressed price across the industry this makes for a great spot to invest in a player trending in the right direction.
Heavy-Hitting High Baller
Sticking with the Laird quotes, the Scot also mentioned that a high ball flight is very advantageous around here, allowing you to access tough-to-reach pin locations. That's great news for someone like Holmes who really launches it vertically. Holmes is making his course debut and may not be a perfect fit for these claustrophobic tee shots but everything else leans in his favor. He likes poa annua greens. He's in the upper tier of this weak field when it comes to baseline performance. However, we get a huge discount because his form has been marginal and he doesn't have any course experience. Even without any course knowledge, I would argue that he is a cash option this week. He ranks inside the top 10 in my long-term performance index and also ranks inside the top 15 in long-term cut-made probability. Holmes is also a machine when it comes to par-5 scoring and Silverado Resort has four of them to feast on this week.
Lining Up Nicely for This Course
I almost never peg Holmes correctly, so feel free to swerve the other way if you believe my streak will continue. However, I really like the way Holmes lines up on this course. The wide fairways will help by allowing him to bomb it off the tee, and his ownership will likely be very low after he missed the cut a week ago at the Quicken Loans. I’m not really concerned about that, as Holmes is a much better fit for this venue. He has four consecutive top 30 finishes at the Old White TPC course, and he ranks well above average statistically in every category I am looking at this week. The relatively steep price will also keep some people away. I love this pivot from some of the chalkier high-end plays.
Much Better Course Fit... Expecting a Nice Bounce-Back
Holmes burned a lot of bridges with his missed cut last week, but we shouldn’t be surprised. TPC Potomac requires you to be deadly accurate off the tee and that’s never been one of his strong suits. This week’s course (The Old White TPC) is much more open off the tee and every year is ranked near the top in terms of driving accuracy. His ability to bomb it out there will be a major advantage this week, especially if his wedge game continues to be dialed in. He’s good on par fours, he’s good on par fives, and he makes a lot of birdies. The one negative is his putting, but as we have seen a number of times this season, that can flip at any time. He clearly has an eye for the course, posting four straight top 30 finishes.
Upside with an Affordable Price Tag
Darkness, my friend, we meet again. I almost never seem to get Holmes right, so go ahead and lock in the fade right now. All kidding aside, he does make sense for this event. He has three career top 15s at this venue, including the last time he played here two years ago. We know there's upside when he's swinging it (and putting it) well, as we saw back at the Farmers Insurance Open a few months ago. The price tag is very fair, and Holmes continues to at least make cuts even when he doesn't have his "A" game. It's about time that we see some long-term form with him, and that could start this week.
J.B. Holmes is a popular play amongst experts this week
Slow play antics at The Farmers Insurance Open earlier this season left many in the DFS community with a harsh view of J.B. Holmes. Plagued by inconsistent play this former Ryder Cup member finished outside the top 15 in the 2017 FedEx Cup standings. With poor play starting to reflect in his DFS pricing, Holmes was a player only worth looking into in terms of a value play with upside. After his 4th place finish at The Farmers, the combination of poor play and a strong dislike of his slow play antics have seen Holmes ownership numbers fail to crack 7% over the last six weeks. The price on Holmes is yet low again this week, and his strong course history finds this boom or bust golfer near the top of our expert rankings for players under $7,500 on DraftKings. Still, a very talented golfer and past champion of this event Holmes has proven that he knows what it takes to get it done this week. Priced to low for his talent, Holmes offers a ton of upside and should be considered a great tournament option this week.
Using predicted ownership to find pivot plays
Ownership projections can be a very useful tool to help build successful rosters. Game selection will often determine how a player uses a tool such as ownership projections. For cash game players the optimal strategy usually consists of playing the value plays regardless of ownership. Tournament roster construction often looks to find a lower owned pivot play around the same price. This week we have a prime opportunity to fade what appears to be a popular mid ranged play in Luke List. At $8,300 List is projected to be one of the highest owned players on DraftKings for the week. While his salary and opportunity make List a great play for cash, we could easily see the merit for pivoting to other players in tournaments. Having never won on Tour, List is the type of player that ultimately makes for an easy fade. Even if he plays well, there is a very small possibility that List performs at a clip that makes him a must play for the week. For tournaments, I like the idea of paying up to get a player like Martin Laird or J.B. Holmes. As a past champion of this event, Laird at somewhat low ownership levels stands out as a great pivot play. With the ability to make a ton of birdies, a player like J.B. Holmes always provides a bit of interest in large field GPP's. Holmes is the type of player that can pay off his salary in light of a top ten finish. The process of using projected ownerships is a great way to help you grow as a player. Even if you don't find a pivot play, the time spent thinking about the merits of making such a move will serve you well in the long run.
J.B. Holmes emerges as top value play on DraftKings
It's not uncommon for the DraftKings pricing algorithm to produce a few miss priced players each week. J.B. Holmes is the 46th ranked player in the world. This 4 time PGA tour winner has struggled to find his form early this season, but he is still a very talented player. A quick comparison of DraftKings and FanDuel pricing revels the magnitude of this week's pricing error. Holmes price of $6,800 on DraftKings represents 13.6 % of the salary cap, and on FanDuel his price of $9100 represents 15.1 precent of the cap. In terms of pricing rank, Holmes is near the bottom on DraftKings and he is the 5th highest ranked player on FanDuel. The DraftKings ownership level of Holmes should rise as the week progresses, but this is still a great spot to buy low on a talented player.
