Hot goalie draws worst matchup of the night

Jacob Markstrom has quietly gone 5-0 with a 1.88 GAA and .937 save percentage in December. During this stretch he has defeated Nashville, St. Louis, Columbus, Philadelphia and Edmonton. While Tampa Bay and their four goals per game is the worst matchup for Markstrom and Vancouver, the Lightning are coming off a grinder of a game against Winnipeg. Choosing a goalie has been a difficult task on a nightly basis, but given Markstrom's current heater and his dirt-cheap price on DraftKings ($6,800), taking a shot on him in the large field tournaments makes sense as a reasonable pivot from the more popular cheap options like Carter Hart (DK specific) and Alexandar Georgiev. Vancouver already stymied the Lightning 4-1 in Tampa back in October. It's risky, but it could pay off in a big way.

**Edit @ 1:30 PM EST - Anders Nilsson will get the start over Markstrom, so it's a no go. Cam Talbot is a risky but cheap option ($7,600) on FanDuel. Carter Hart, Alexandar Georgiev and Darcy Kuemper are cheap goalies at home on DraftKings worth your consideration**

**Edit again @ 2:15 PM EST - Conflicting info from the same beat writer today. Looks like Jacob Markstrom was the first goalie off so he should start.**

**Edit AGAIN @ 2:25 PM EST - The official Vancouver Canucks account confirms Anders Nilsson will start. Welcome to the wonderful world of hockey!**

Cheap Goalie Could Pay Off

On such a small slate, it can often pay to be contrarian. While most will select goalies for the heavy favorites (Leafs and Wild), I think Jacob Markstrom could be in position to steal a win tonight. The Canucks are getting healthier and will have several of their key playmakers back in the lineup. A home bout against the Minnesota isn't an intimidating matchup as the Wild as just 1-2-0 on the road compared to 5-0-2 at home. With such a cheap price tag, he'll allow you to pay up for other skaters.

Goaltending is garbage tonight, so taking this road goalie isn't the worst idea

Goaltending is pretty bad today, with two of the better goalies playing their first games off of injuries. Tonight, taking the road Jacob Markstrom might be the best play. The Vancouver Canucks are taking on the Arizona Coyotes who are on the tail end of a back to back. This is a battle between two of the four worst teams in the NHL, so taking the goalie against the worst team in the NHL can't be the worst play? Markstrom has had a tough season, but his numbers have been a bit better since the calendar changed to 2018. This is still a risky tournament play, but the upside is there as the Coyotes struggle to score.
