Jay Bruce Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Torched By Lefties

Taijuan Walker has been torched by lefties this season, allowing a .987 OPS compared to a .547 OPS to righties. Six of his eight homers have also been at the hands of lefties. This makes it a prime spot for Bryce Harper, but I also love including Didi Gregorius and Jay Bruce in a Phillies mini stack to take advantage of these splits. Andrew Knapp and Roman Quinn are also lefties lower in the order if you wanted to roll out the full lefties Phillies stack, and I’m not opposed to it as Knapp and Quinn should be relatively unowned.

A Cheap Potential Dong

Bruce so far this season has been absolutely crushing RHP. On the season, he owns a .521 ISO and .450 wOBA vs RHP and he draws a matchup vs Sanchez who has been really had this season giving up a .403 wOBA and .254 ISO vs lefities. This is a great matchup for Bruce here and his price is way too low over on DK sitting at under 3k. Just throw him into your lineup and way for the home run notification shortly after the game starts.

A Stack To Attack A "Mirage" Pitcher

Much of the ownership this slate will be on the Red Sox & Dodgers, so looking a bit down the board with the Phillies could be a way to get a bit contrarian - a healthy 5.3 implied run total in a great hitting environment facing Alcantara, who had a SIERA last season nearly 1.50 points higher than his actual ERA. While the Phillies will still garner decent ownership on DraftKings, the $21.5k-$22.0k price tag for their top 6 hitters projects well in the mid-range against their 5-10% ownership in GPPs and consists of scarce positions (C & SS) so you can get quality one-offs or 2-3-man combos with them.

The FanDuel Value Decision

|| Update: With Bruce hitting 7th I would expect his ownership to drop a fair amount from what I was projecting when I originally wrote him up. In my opinion, his drop in the order - and likely drop in ownership - makes him a better tournament target than he was before. || So, here's the thing. Jay Bruce is undoubtedly one of the top value options on FanDuel and as a result he's likely to be heavily owned. He's an extremely strong play with a ton of power upside in this matchup. I think you should absolutely have exposure to Bruce in your tournament builds but also think he's a prime candidate to go underweight on. Bruce could see 30%+ ownership which is ridiculous for any player on an 11-game slate, much less a player that has seen some offensive regression the last couple of seasons. If fading Bruce, I like the idea of spending a little more at the OF position so you can find yourself in a different lineup build than what 30%+ of the field will be running.

That's Just Too Cheap

There are no terrible pitchers on Opening Day, but one of the more attackable options is the Marlins Sandy Alcantara going up against the Phillies. While Alcantara showed some solid skills against right-handed batters, he was at just 15.9% K with 39% hard hits allowed to lefties. Bryce Harper is a top of the line play in all formats, but on FD, Jay Bruce stands out at just $2,100. His .310 ISO was the highest mark on the team, and he is way too cheap here for his power upside.

No Fans At The Park To Boo

Perhaps it will help the Phillies that their home fans aren't at the park to boo them? All kidding aside, they make for a nice stack in the early games. Sandy Alcantara is one of the worst pitchers on this slate, particularly against left-handed batters. His peripherals against LHB were very poor in 2019, as he had a meager 15.8% strikeout rate to go along with a nearly 11% walk rate against them. He has a fly ball lean to go along with an opposing hard hit rate of nearly 40% when facing lefties. Bryce Harper is obviously your elite target here, while value can be had with the likes of Jay Bruce and newly acquired Didi Gregorius.

Jay Bruce (wrist) scratched Saturday; Roman Quinn replaces

Bruce has been scratched from the Philadelphia Phillies original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the Miami Marlins due to the lingering effects of a sore elbow. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Roman Quinn, who will now play center field and slot into the eighth spot in the order, which bumps Cesar Hernandez and Maikel Franco up to sixth and seventh, respectively. However, the remainder of the Phillies lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Jordan Yamamoto on the road this afternoon.

Power Lefty Bat

Jay Bruce is someone that I really like in tournaments against Jordan Yamamoto. Yamamoto has looked pretty good in his first two starts, giving up only 5 hits with no earned runs. I don't see this continuing; it is a small sample size, but he is giving up a 45% fly ball rate and a 63% hard hit rate to left handed hitters. Bruce has a .325 ISO, 57% fly ball rate, and a 39% hard hit rate against right handed pitching. He will be one of my top plays of the day in tournaments.

Sandy Alcantara has highest 30-day SIERA on the board tonight at 5.25

Sandy Alcantara has a 3.73 ERA, but has otherwise been a bad pitcher this year as proven by his 5.01 xFIP, 5.41 SIERA, and 5.8% K-BB. Alcantara does do some things well on the mound; he has a 47% GB rate, just a 4.8% barrel rate and an 86 MPH aEV on the year. However, he doesn’t miss enough bats and allows too many baserunners to keep the ERA he currently has. Alcantara has also been much worse on the road over 116 innings with the Marlins since 2018: he’s allowed a .342 xwOBA in away games compared to a .306 xwOBA at home. The Phillies currently have 5.18 implied runs at home tonight and have some good options in their lineup. JT Realmuto (.364 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Bryce Harper (.353), Scott Kingery (.350), Jay Bruce (.338), Rhys Hoskins (.326), Cesar Hernandez (.3325) and Jean Segura (.308) are all solid options in Philly’s lineup tonight. Scott Kingery has been their hottest hitter with a .386 xwOBA over the past 14 days. The Phillies will also benefit from facing a weak Miami bullpen that has a 3rd worst 4.73 SIERA / 2nd worst 5.32 xFIP over the past 30 days.

LHBs have a .371 wOBA, .392 xwOBA against Taylor Clarke

Taylor Clarke is not missing bats (15.8 K%, 8.4 SwStr%. His 42.3 Z-O-Swing% is worst on the board, which has led to 10% of his batted balls being classified as Barrels and a .365 xwOBA that’s second worst on the board. It would then seem a bit fluky that he’s only allowed 8.3% of his fly balls to leave the yard, which puts his SIERA and xFIP more than a half run above his 4.43 ERA. With nearly half the teams on a nine game slate above five implied runs, no particular attention should be paid to what’s been an average Philadelphia offense at 5.11, especially with potential weather concerns, but LHBs have hammered Clarke in a small sample (.371 wOBA, .392 xwOBA, 40.5 Hard%). Bryce Harper (123 wRC+, .207 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Jay Bruce (109 wRC+, .281 ISO) are the obvious Philadelphia offerings from that side. The latter has been tearing the cover off the ball (266 wRC+, 55 Hard% last seven days). Also interesting though, is that Cesar Hernandez (103 wRC+, .139 ISO) has been working near the top of the lineup with McCutchen out and though he doesn’t have nearly as much power, he costs quite a bit less than those other guys ($3.6K DK, $2.8K FD), making him potentially one of the top values on the board. Also, while Clarke has just a .255 wOBA against same-handed batters, xwOBA drives that up 68 points, making Rhys Hoskins (143 wRC+, .287 ISO) a perfectly viable stacking compliment, especially at a reasonable $4.2K on DraftKings.
