This Offense Projects Top Values on Either Site
One of several lists that will probably change once actual lineups are announced, just as Dodgers dominate the overall hitter projections, a full run above any other team total, they also place five batters among the top 10 projected FanDuel values. Max Muncy (112 wRC+, .191 ISO vs RHP this year) and Justin Turner (131 wRC+, .181 ISO) project as top bats and FanDuel values for just under $3K against Ryan Feltner (RHBs .370 wOBA, .367 xwOBA – LHBs .326 wOBA, .316 xwOBA). Austin Barnes (108 wRC+, .164 ISO), Cody Bellinger (89 wRC+, .198 ISO) and Trayce Thompson (185 wRC+, .298 ISO) also project as top 10 FD values at varying costs below $3K. Thompson is the only Dodger bat also currently projecting as a top 10 DK value as well.
The only offense projecting multiple top 10 values on both sites is the Tampa Bay Rays. Nathan Eovaldi struck out just three of 19 Orioles with a 5.6 BB% with a concerning velocity drop further from the velocity loss he suffered before hitting the IL. While Eovaldi has produced an 18.1 K-BB%, the contact profile has been a disaster this year (10.8% Barrels/BBE, 46% 95+ mph EV). He has a bit of a reverse spilt, this year, but batters from either side of the plate are between a .317 and .339 wOBA and xwOBA against him. Ji-Man Choi (109 wRC+, .157 ISO) projects as one of the top two values on either site for less than $2.5K. David Peralta (114 wRC+, .180 ISO) is a top FanDuel value for just $2.1K and Jonathan Aranda (99 wRC+, .154 ISO) is a top DraftKings value for $100 more.
The only other offense projecting multiple top 10 value on either site are the Oakland A’s on DraftKings. Michael Lorenzen generates more than half his contact on the ground, but LHBs have a .346 wOBA and .326 xwOBA against him. Conner Capel (157 wRC+, .244 ISO) and Seth Brown (130 wRC+, .234 ISO) cost no more than $2.6K.
Several Ways to Efficiently Supplement Your Coors Stack
You want a top pitcher with an Atlanta stack at Coors in your lineup tonight. Well, you’re going to have to save somewhere and here’s how PlateIQ projections suggest you do so. On FanDuel, the other half of your Coors lineup should be filled with Rays. Four of the top eight projected point per dollar values on FD are playing for the home team in Tampa Bay. Brett Phillips (128 wRC+, .257 ISO vs RHP since 2021), Kevin Kiermaier (100 wRC+, .167 ISO), Mike Zunino (68 wRC+, .219 ISO) and Ji-Man Choi (140 wRC+. 216 ISO) all cost less than $3K against the volatile as ever Vince Velasquez, whose strikeout rate on the season is just 21%, though an 8.9 BB% is actually better than his career rate. He’s still getting barreled up fairly regularly though (13.8%), driving a 6.25 xERA that’s his only estimator above a 5.30 ERA. Batters from either side of the plate have a wOBA and xwOBA between .360 and .365 against him since last season.
FanDuel projections also suggest you can pair a couple of cheap Yankees with Aaron Judge, the second best projected hitter on the board, against Elvin Rodriguez, who has struck out 10 of 48 batters with just a 7.5 SwStr% and 10.4 BB%. The marginally regarded 24 year-old (40 FV Fangraphs) projects as a spot starter or rotation depth type. Tonight, he projects as Judge’s dinner. Joey Gallo (122 wRC+, .250 ISO) is the top projected value on FanDuel. Both he and Matt Carpenter (199 wRC+ since being called up) cost $2.5K or less.
DraftKings believes there are two ways of supplementing your lineup with value bats. One is in the Atlanta lineup itself, by adding Adam Duvall (98 wRC+, .232 ISO vs RHP since LY) and Michael Harris II (95 wRC+ since being called up) to your stack for $2.5K or less. Of course, this means you’ll have to sacrifice one of the top 10 projected Altanta bats. Marcell Ozuna is projected the lowest of the four.
The other avenue is with a Cleveland stack in Baltimore. With exactly two strikeouts in three of his last four starts, Bruce Zimmermann is down to a 19.2 K% on the season, but with a strong 5.2 BB%, that may help mitigate the issues with a concerning contact profile (39.1 GB%, 91.2 mph EV, 13.8% Barrels/BBE). The Guardians may also miss closer Jorge Lopez, who threw 26 pitches last night. Batters from either side of the plate exceed a .360 wOBA and xwOBA against Zimmermann since last year. A min-priced Oscar Gonzalez (144 wRC+ since being called up) is the top projected DK value. Ernie Clement (108 wRC+ last 30 days) and Oscar Mercaod (94 wRC+ vs LHP since LY) are not far behind for $2.3K or less.
Despite Reverse Spilt, Statcast Suggests All Batters Hit this Pitcher Well
When you look at the Tampa Bay offense, the first thing one might notice that they strike out a lot against RHP (25.9%). In fact, only one team on the slate has struck out more against RHP this season and they’re facing a lefty tonight. Michael Wacha may be worth a look for $6.6K on DraftKings. But also, high strikeout totals don’t preclude this offense from being successful. At 4.4 implied runs, the Rays are currently tied for the fifth spot on the board and Wacha has a substantial reverse platoon split since last season (RHBs .375 wOBA, .401 xwOBA). Yandy Diaz (101 wRC+ vs RHP since LY) hasn’t shown much power against same handed pitching (.104 ISO), but he’s batting fifth and costs just $2.5K on FD. Manuel Margot (123 wRC+ in 2022) is two spots below him, but costs $3K or less on either site. While LHBs have a wOBA 80 points lower against Wacha over the same time span, Statcast drives that up to a .355 xwOBA, so we’re not going to dismiss the most potent part of this Tampa Bay lineup at all. Brandon Lowe (158 wRC+, .304 ISO vs RHP since 2021) may be the most under-rated hitter in baseball. Ji-Man Choi (152 wRC+, .233 ISO) is more than $1K less on DK. Then there’s Wander Franco (105 wRC+, .137 ISO) who only has a 208 wRC+ this season.
A Huge Park Upgrade
The Rays square off against the Yankees in the Bronx tonight, and I am targeting power lefties against Masahiro Tananka. Austin Meadows and his .276 ISO and .395 wOBA against RH pitching, and Brandon Lowe with his .265 ISO and .373 wOBA are the top options. Ji-Man Choi also makes for an incredible value option to add in to your stack. Tanaka has allowed a .207 ISO to LH hitters since the start of 2019 vs only a .144 ISO to RH hitters.
Astros are heavy favorites (-320) in what projects to be a low-scoring game
This matchup between the Rays and Astros has just a 7.5 O/U with two aces taking the mound in Minute Maid Park.
The Astros currently have a solid 4.98 implied total ahead of facing Blake Snell, whose had a bit of an up and down season that ultimately ended with a 4.29 ERA, 3.31 xFIP and 3.56 SIERA, 24.3% K-BB and 1.27 WHIP. Snell is a huge question mark coming into this game as he just recently returned from a two month absence (elbow surgery) on 9-17 and has made 3 starts since, failing to reach 3 innings pitched in any start. It really wouldn’t be surprising for Snell to show rust versus a stacked Astros lineup in this spot and get yanked relatively early. He also has the talent to shut them down. The Rays do have a league-best 3.21 SIERA from their bullpen over the past 30 days, and Snell will likely be on a very short leash. Carlos Correa (.436 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Jose Altuve (.421), George Springer (.397), Yordan Alvarez (.390), Alex Bregman (.382), Yuli Gurriel (.322), Michael Brantley (.316), Martin Maldonado (.272) and Jake Marisnick (.235) are all in the Astros projected lineup for tonight. Bregman and Springer have been the ‘Stros hottest bats with xwOBAs over .400 over the past 2 weeks. Gurriel (.179) and Alvarez (.251) have been their coldest bats.
The Rays have just a 2.52 implied total vs. Gerrit Cole, who has been insanely good all year and has posted an otherworldly 1.07 ERA / 1.50 FIP / 1.64 xFIP, 48.7% K rate, 4.6% BB rate and 0.64 WHIP over the past 30 days in 42 innings pitched. It is worth noting that those numbers came against terrible offenses (Seattle twice, Kansas City, Texas and LAA without Trout). The Rays faced Cole as recently on 8/28 in Minute Maid Park and Cole did give up 4 earned runs over 6 and 2/3 innings, though he also posted a 14/1 K/BB ratio and 0.66 xFIP in that game. If/when Cole is chased from the game, the Rays will face an Astros bullpen that has a 5th best 3.49 SIERA over the past 30 days. Austin Meadows (.388 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Ji-Man Choi (.375), Brandon Lowe (.365), Tommy Pham (.348), Yandy Diaz (.338), Willy Adames (.328), Travis D’Arnaud (.310 since joining TB), Joey Wendle (.295) and Kevin Kiermaier (.293) make up the projected lineup for the Rays tonight. Meadows, Choi and Lowe all have xwOBAs over .440 over the past 2 weeks, while Pham, d’Arnaud and Wendle have been cold with xwOBAs under .260. Most Rays bats are dirt cheap across the industry for this matchup.
Top strikeout rates on the board (Verlander 35.4%, Glasnow 33%) in Houston
The game in Houston features the two highest strikeout rates of the day (Tyler Glasnow 33%, Justin Verlander 35.4%) in one of two extremely negative run environments. The issue with Glasnow is two-fold. Initially, he faces the top offense on the board (Astros 123 wRC+, 18.4 K%, 17.8 HR/FB vs RHP). Additionally, he last faced more than 15 batters or threw more than 66 pitches in an outing in May. However, both of those totals occurred in his last start, so perhaps it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he’s conditioned to reach five to six innings at around 80-85 pitches, but that’s still unlikely to created enough value for his $8.6K DraftKings price tag. While he’s the cheapest arm on FanDuel ($7K), a quality start is unlikely as well. Also worth mentioning is that this game will feature two of the top bullpens in baseball, making it more difficult to find an advantage with Houston bats, implied for a second best 4.66 runs tonight, although their lineup is stacked with quality bats against pitchers from either side.
Justin Verlander had a 30.4 K-BB% this season with a 2.58 ERA, 2.95 SIERA, 2.51 DRA, and .248 xwOBA. His 77.7 Z-Contact% is the only mark below 80% today. He basically broke the ERA estimators model with a .218 BABIP and 88.4 LOB%. An extreme fly ball pitcher (35.9 GB%), he allowed the third most HRs in baseball (36) and may be the favorite for the AL Cy Young. While Verlander shares the highest rate of Barrels/BBE on the board (7.8%) with Mike Foltynewicz, it’s still only 2.1 points above Glanow’s lowest mark. To be clear, none of these teams are easy to pitch to today. Only the Cardinals (93 wRC+ vs RHP) are below a 103 wRC+ against the handedness of the pitcher they are facing today. However, aside from the friendly run environment, the Rays are one of four teams with a strikeout split above 21% today (22.9%). Via PlateIQ, today’s specific lineup averages a 21.1 K% vs RHP this year. Verlander is the most expensive pitcher on the board (by over $1K on DraftKings), but is also the top overall arm on the board. Austin Meadows, Ji-Man Choi and Brandon Lowe all exceed a .200 ISO vs RHP if you’re looking for some potentially low owned power, but Verlander has absolutely no overall weakness against LHBs (.239 wOBA, .229 xwOBA this year). At 2.84 implied runs the Rays have the lowest team total on the board by a full half run.
Opener Allowing a Lot of Hard Contact
Jhoulys Chacin is listed as Boston's "Opener" for Monday's game but Rays hitters could see him a couple of times as Chacin threw 72 pitches in his last outing. Out of all pitchers that have thrown at least 95 IP this season, Chacin owns the third highest hard-hit rate (47%), which is tops on the slate by a wide margin. While this game is taking place in the pitcher friendly Tropicana, there aren't many good hitting environments on Monday's small slate which helps negate the poor context a bit.
Rays might go overlooked in a nice spot vs. Porcello
Porcello has been consistently bad this year, posting a 5.77 ERA, 5.33 xFIP and 5.01 SIERA with a 1.44 WHIP, 11.6% K-BB and 7.8% SwStr. Porcello does limit his walks (6.2% BB rate) but gives up tons of home runs (1.72 HR/9) and gets barreled up pretty often (9.9% barrel rate). Porcello has also allowed a 1.65 WHIP and 2.35 HR/9 over the past month. The Rays have seen Porcello pretty well this year (.360 xwOBA against in 77 plate appearances) and look to be in a potentially underrated spot at home tonight. Austin Meadows (.387 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Ji-Man Choi (.365), Tommy Pham (.357), Avisail Garcia (.339), Willy Adames (.332), Eric Sogard (.327) and Joey Wendle (.295) are options in the Rays’ projected order. Meadows has been the Ray’s hottest hitter over the past 2 weeks with a .441 xwOBA, followed by J-Man Choi with a .427 mark. On Draftkings, Meadows ($5.5k) and Pham ($4.7k) are pretty expensive, but there are some nice values to be had in this order: Joey Wendle (projected to leadoff, $3.3k), Choi (projected 4th, $4.1k), Sogard (6th, $3.8k) and Adames (7th, $3.6k). Their pricing is very similar on Fanduel as well. The Rays currently have a 4.89 implied line, and could be something of a contrarian option in GPPs with all of the attractive stack options on this slate.
