Backup goaltender draws favorable spot at home
Pheonix Copley has put together a fantastic season as Braden Holtby's backup as the Alaskan native has posted a 9-2-2 record with a 2.56 goals against average and .915 save percentage. While priced appropriately on DraftKings ($8,200), Copley is a fantastic source of salary relief on FanDuel where he checks in at just $7,900. The Flyers are in the midst of a seven game losing streak and they have been shutout in two of their last four contests. Copley should get the victory and see his fair share of shots.
On DraftKings, Jimmy Howard is an intriguing option in tournaments at $7,600 as Montreal continues to take shots but has had trouble converting them. Howard has been reliable this season and should easily see 30 shots. It is hard imagining the Canadiens skating into Detroit and pouring it on, so Howard's floor seems to be there tonight as well.
Cheap veteran goalie worth your consideration
Jimmy Howard has quietly won four consecutive starts, and overall, in Howard's last eight starts, he has allowed three goals or less while seeing roughly 35 shots against. The shot volume will likely be there again tonight against Arizona, a team which is averaging 33.2 shots on goal per game which is tied for seventh-most in the National Hockey League. Be mindful - Jimmy Howard can self-destruct just when things are looking good, but it is hard to argue his price tag (DraftKings - $7,200 & FanDuel - $8,200), at home in what amounts to a coin flip game. Detroit's offense will also benefit from the absence of stout netminder Antti Raanta as career backup Darcy Kuemper is expected to get the call.
This goalie should see a large number of shots
The Red Wings picked up their first win Saturday night as they held off the Florida Panthers in overtime. It has not been a good start to the season for Jimmy Howard who is 1-3-2 with a 3.43 goals against average and .898 save percentage, but there are several things working in his favor tonight. Over the years, the Carolina Hurricanes have been a team that takes an enormous amount of shots but has issues converting them. After all, while the Hurricanes are averaging the most shots on goal per game (42.1 SF/G), they are averaging just 3.25 goals per game, which is only 16th in the National Hockey League. Additionally, the Hurricanes have dropped three straight games, scoring a mere four goals in the process. Howard is not a pretty play, but he is just $6,800 on DraftKings and $7,300 on FanDuel and should see 35-40 shots tonight against an offense that sputtered last week.
This salary-saving goalie seems the safest
Jimmy Howard has been quite solid this season (8-5-1, 2.23 GAA, .931 SV%) and will have the pleasure of taking on the road-weary Colorado Avalanche. Colorado was dominated last night in Nashville and have the short turn-around here to take on a decent Detroit team. Jimmy Howard checks in as the biggest Vegas favorite of the night. The Avalanche sport the National Hockey League's second-worst adjusted xGF/60 (1.86) at 5-on-5. The only team that trails them is the Buffalo Sabres who Howard handled the other night for just one goal. Use Jimmy again here.
Howard Looking to Shut the Door
A big issue for the Buffalo Sabres is goal scoring. They lack the depth outside of their top guys to consistently produce, and as a result see themselves with the worst goals per game of any team in the league. Jimmy Howard may not be as good as Sergei Bobrovsky, but his matchup is much better, and tonight, he's well worth rostering at his price.
Veteran goaltender seems to have completely taken control of the starters role
While Jimmy Howard has certainly had his ups and downs in his career, he is playing solid for the Red Wings this season. He's got a 2.34 goals against average and .930 save percentage, but the wins aren't there because Detroit averages 2.7 goals per game. At home to Calgary who are rolling out Eddie Lack in net, the opportunity for a win presents itself quite nicely for Detroit. It's a three game slate, I'll take a home goaltender that I don't expect to have much ownership in tournaments.
Top Goalie Tonight?
The Arizona Coyotes are currently the worst team in the National Hockey League (posting a 1-10-1 record so far this season) and their lack of offense is a real concern. The Desert Dogs are averaging just 2.50 goals per game in 2017-18, which is good for 25th overall. Considering the Coyotes are also playing on the tail end of a road back-to-back, and also their lackluster play at both ends of the rink, I expect to see the Detroit Red Wings dominate this game from puck drop. Jimmy Howard has been solid in goal for the Red Wings this year (2.52 GAA, .929 SV%), and I think we see another strong performance from him this evening at Little Caesars Arena.
Cheap Backup Goalie Makes First Start
On such a short slate, the salary saving options in net are quite limited. Curtis McElhinney is not a particularly good goalie, but the Toronto Maple Leafs check in as a decently sized favorite and his price across the industry is attackable (FanDuel - $7,400 and DraftKings - $7,800). Curtis will be supported by the National Hockey League's top-scoring offense (4.66 goals per game) and should see 30-plus shots against a rested Detroit team featuring multiple scoring lines. McElhinney will likely be a popular choice in tournaments given his price, so if one wants to be ultra-contrarian, taking a stab with Jimmy Howard in the opposite crease could pay off.
