Joey Rickard Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Chris Davis (illness) scratched Tuesday; Joey Rickard replaces

Davis has been scratched from the Baltimore Orioles original confirmed lineup and will not start in Tuesday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays due to an illness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Joey Rickard, who will now play right field and slot into the sixth spot in the order, which slides Hanser Alberto down one batting position to seventh, respectively. However, the remainder of the Orioles lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Tyler Glasnow on the road this evening.

Double-Digit Strikeout Potential In The Bronx

If you assumed Andrew Cashner was the subject of this note, you are sadly mistaken. Masahiro Tanaka will start Opening Day against the Orioles, who are trotting out a glorified Triple-A caliber roster. Let’s take a look at Baltimore’s 3-7 hitters: Jonathan Villar (.117 ISO, .311 wOBA, 25.8% K-rate vs. RHP in 2018), Trey Mancini (.188 ISO, .319 wOBA, 25.8% K-rate), Rio Ruiz (.000 ISO, .198 wOBA, 33.3% K-rate in 15 AB), Joey Rickard (.143 ISO, .295 wOBA, 20.8% K-rate) and the all-mighty Chris Davis (.124 ISO, .253 wOBA, 36.7% K-rate). Jesus Sucre and rookie Richie Martin round out the bottom two spots in the order. Although New York’s stellar bullpen will not require Aaron Boone to push Tanaka this season, he has double-digit strikeout potential in this one, even if he’s limited to five or six innings on the hill. Last season, he struck out 25.0% of his opponents and had an elite 5.5% walk rate. His “stuff” was sensational, as evidenced by the fact that opposing hitters swung at 36.3% of his pitches outside of the zone. We will want to pick on this Orioles lineup all season long and Opening Day is certainly no exception, even in the hitter-friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. Since the Bombers are massive favorites, Tanaka should fully be expected to not only dominate, but also earn a win in this contest, boosting his DFS outlook. He won’t come cheap, but he has similar scoring potential to higher-priced aces like Max Scherzer, Jacob DeGrom, Justin Verlander and company.

Value in a weak lineup against a pitcher that gets smashed by same-handed batters (.400 wOBA)

Marco Estrada is an extreme fly ball pitcher (23%) with a park downgrade in Baltimore and RHBs have an astounding .400 wOBA against him. That's how you get the Orioles to 4.51 implied runs. It's a problem that the only batter in the lineup above a .200 ISO vs RHP is batting ninth. The only other batter above even a .160 ISO vs RHP is Trey Mancini (101 wRC+, .198 ISO). He's also the only batter in the lineup above a 100 wRC+ or 27 Hard% over the last week (170 wRC+, 37.5 Hard%). Adam Jones (106 wRC+, .155 ISO) seems viable as well with Joey Rickard (84 wRC+, .145 ISO) costing just $3.2K on DK and batting second.

Joey Rickard scratched Monday; Chris Davis replaces

Rickard has been scratched from the Baltimore Orioles original confirmed lineup and will not start in Monday’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays due to yet another lineup change by manager Buck Showalter, the second one of the day. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Chris Davis, who will play first base slot into the fifth spot in the order, which slides Tim Beckham and Renato Nunez down one batting position to sixth and seventh, respectively. It goes without saying that there have been some noteworthy changes to this Orioles order, so be sure to check out the updated lineup on the Starting Lineups page as they face off against left-hander Ryan Borucki at home this evening.

Power Stack

Career ISO vs LHP:

Trumbo: .227

Machado: .190

Valencia: .182

Mancini: .177

Schoop: .157

Jones: .149

Jason Vargas versus RHB for his career: 4.62 xFIP, .325 wOBA, 1.25 HR/9

Listing all of that out was more of a thought exercise for me as I always am attracted to an Orioles stack when they face a LHP because despite continually putting up poor numbers as a team, individually they possess above average power against southpaws. Since 2014, when fences were moved in at CitiField, the park has played right around league average for HR power out to left field. So while this is an unfavorable park shift from Camden, it could be worse. Jason Vargas has already given up 6 HRs this year in just 25.1 IP and Baltimore is one of my favorite sneaky stacks of Tuesday's slate despite a relatively low implied run total (4.2).

Lots of cheap, top of the lineup Outfield options to compliment high priced pitching tonight

Players looking to pay up for Clayton Kershaw and several expensive bats have a lot of cheap options at the tops of some decently projected lineups tonight to help them along. Ryan Raburn bats second for the minimum on DraftKings against the R.A. Dickey in one of the two lineups projected for six runs tonight. The Padres open with Jose Pirela ($3.1K DK, $2.5K FD) and Franchy Cordero ($2.5K DK, $2.4K FD) against Scott Feldman tonight. Jaycob Brugman ($2.2K either site) leads off for Oakland against Jose Urena. Joey Rickard ($3.2K DK, $2.5K FD) leads off against Derek Holland. We've covered several OF options, but there are some infield cheapies as well. Wilmer Flores has three HRs against Jon Lester and bats second. Further down in the order, we find Matt Davidson ($2.9K DK, $2.4K FD), who homered last night and has a .250 ISO vs RHP since last season.

Eduardo Rodriguez has held RHBs to a .299 wOBA since 2016, projected as top FD value tonight

The Orioles broke out for 10 runs last night, but still have just an 89 wRC+ at home and 95 wRC+ vs LHP (24.4 K%), though they do make good contact against southpaws (36.1 Hard%). Baltimore is still a difficult place to pitch for a pitcher with a 33.8 GB%, but Eduardo Rodriguez has the third highest strikeout rate (26.6%) and swinging strike rate (12.1%) on the slate with only 27.9% hard contact. Additionally, the Orioles have just a 90 sOPS+ (Baseball-Reference) against fly ball pitchers too.The third highest priced pitcher on either site, right around $9K, Rodriguez appears to be the play here. RotoGrinders Player Projections like him as the top value play on FanDuel tonight (2.27 Pt/$/K). He has allowed RHBs just a .299 wOBA since last season, while only Manny Machado (.246) has an ISO above .175 against LHP for the Orioles this year. He carries a -23 wRC+ over the last week into this game, but does cost less than $4K on DraftKings tonight. Joey Rickard (121 wRC+, .160 ISO vs LHP since 2016) may have some value on FanDuel for just $2.4K.

Adam Jones scratched, Joey Rickard will replace him

Adam Jones has been scratched from the Baltimore lineup with Joey Rickard replacing him and batting eighth. Jonathan Schoop will move up to second against Luis Severino

Joey Rickard is the top option for a cheap bat in the leadoff spot

We're still waiting on some late lineup confirmations, but we're already looking at nice cheap bats to helps supplement your expensive pitching or top bats. If unconcerned about lineup placement when considering Catcher, James McCann (136 wRC+, .310 ISO vs LHP since last season), Martin Maldonado (136 wRC+, .136 ISO vs LHP since last season) and Jett Bandy (125 wRC+, .269 ISO vs LHP career) are all extremely affordable options and above average hitters against southpaws. Ian Happ costs just $2.2K on FanDuel in the middle of the top projected offense tonight, while teammate Jeimer Candelario costs just $200 more. This is likely where most players will look to save some offensive dollars. Nich Ahmed (unconfirmed) has a 219 wRC+ over the last week and costs $2.8K on either site against Tommy Milone if players are looking to punt SS tonight, while Wilmer Difo is the minimum on FanDuel against Chad Kuhl. Your cheap Outfielders are where some of the more premium lineup spots can be found with Joey Rickard (120 wRC+, .175 ISO vs LHP career) costs less than $3K on either site, as does Adam Frazier (107 wRC+ vs RHP) in a tougher spot against Stephen Strasburg.

Plenty of Outfield help for players looking to save salary tonight

The demand for expensive pitching may not be that over-whelming tonight, but player are likely going to load up on expensive bats, meaning they'll still need to find savings somewhere. Luckily, there are some top and middle of the lineup bargains to help everyone do so tonight. We start off in the outfield with Joey Rickard (130 wRC+, .183 ISO vs LHP career) for just $2.7K or less against Danny Duffy (RHBs .332 wOBA, 34.1 Hard% since 2015). Tommy Pham (134 wRC+, .261 ISO vs RHP since 2015) moves up to second for just a few hundred more than Rickard. He faces Eddie Butler. RHBs had a .384 wOBA against him while pitching for the Rockies.
