Johnson Wagner Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Johnson Wagner stands out as a great source of value

Weak field events always create a strange pricing dynamic. We usually end up with a large number of golfers overpriced in comparison to a normal field which leaves very few standout value plays for the week. Priced way down on a site like DraftKings Johnson Wagner projects as a top play in terms of Pt/$/K in our model for the week. Looking to improve on his status moving forward this PGA Tour veteran is simply too cheap in comparison to golfers in his price range. Wanger ended up making the cut last week but will need a better showing if he has hopes of improving his reshuffle number. Wagner has gained 10 shots tee to green in his last 4 starts at The Sanderson Farms Championship. With three top 35 or better finishes at The Country Club of Jackson, Wagner is in a position to meet or exceed his projection for the week and makes sense as a great source of value for GPP's

Underpriced Cut Maker

Wagner is just too cheap this week — plain and simple. There are very few tournaments where a golfer that’s this cheap is even in consideration to make my player pool, let alone make the list of core plays. He has made the cut in each of his last four events on tour and has two top 25 finishes during that stretch. While he wasn’t great last week, he did make the cut and his statistics were encouraging. He gained strokes with his irons and gained over three strokes putting. If we see improvements off the tee and around the green, he should easily improve on that T64 finish. He has made the cut at this tournament in each of his last three appearances finish no worse than T35 during that stretch.

Johnson Wagner in need of a good week

The lengthened wrap around season should have a big impact on The PGA Tour moving forward. With more events in the fall players in need of a good start to the season will have a few more chances to do so before the calendar year ends. In this week's field on a less than desirable status ( 126 to 150 on last years FedEx Cup points list), Johnson Wagner will look to post a solid start to his season with hopes of improving his reshuffle number. Due to his status on tour, Wagner will have a very limited ability to pick what weeks he plays, so a fast start is almost a must for this PGA Tour veteran. The good news for Wagner is that he has historically played well at this event. In addition to his runner up finish during the 2013 season, Wagner has gained 14 shots tee to green over his last five starts at this event. Priced-down due to his less than stellar recent form, Wagner stands out as one of the better value plays in our projection model for the week. With the new top 65 cut rule, it will be more important to have value plays that can do more than just make the cut. You should look at upside more when picking from the value pool. As a 3 time winner on tour, Wanger has the experience and upside needed to be considered in terms of value and upside for the week.

Johnson Wagner looks to improve on a solid course history

Currently ranked outside the top 150 in this year's FedEx Cup standings, Johnson Wanger will need a strong finish to his season if wants to make his first playoff appearance since the 2016 season. Even though Johnson has struggled to play well for a majority of this season this week's John Deere Classic could provide the springboard needed to get his season back on track. In addition to facing what is a very weak field, Johnson has the benefit of playing a course that seems to fit his game. Four of his last five starts at TPC Deere Run have resulted in four top 20 finishes highlighted by a pair of top-five showings. Johnson has gained almost 40 strokes tee to green in those five starts making him one of the better value plays for the week. The combination of low price and an excellent course history has Johnson near the top of our projections for the week in terms of Pt/$/K.

Great Course History for GPPs

It will be interesting to see where Wagner’s ownership comes in this week. For one, his stats do not “pop” but he did have a decent finish last week (23rd) and now comes to a course that has been very kind to him over the years. Since 2014, Wagner’s finishes read: 7 - 5 - 5 - mc - 16. There is still plenty of debate surrounding course history but when I see results like this I am perfectly fine taking this player as a value.

He used to Rock a Mean Mustache

Wagner is not a big name in golf, so he should fly under the radar this week. There will be some (like myself) that peg him as a strong play. He has good course history (two top 25s in the last two seasons), he has good form (six straight cuts made with four top 35 finishes in a row), and he tends to play his best on these shorter courses where accuracy off the tee means more than distance. He’s one of the best putters in the field and the rest of his statistics are above-average in every single category. We currently have him projected at less than 10% ownership, which seems like a steal for a golfer that checks all of the boxes at such a cheap price point.
