Jose De Leon Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Padres only have an implied run total of 3.5 runs

Jose De Leon is a huge strikeout upside pitcher who had a 32.5% strikeout rate in Triple-A this season, and was well over the 30% mark throughout his time in the minors. He showed that upside against this same Padres team in his first major league start, striking out nine batters in six innings, but followed that up with two poor starts. The Padres certainly bring that strikeout upside back into play, but we should assume that the risk of limited innings outweighs the likelihood of another nine strikeout game. We are not getting any substantial savings either, so De Leon is nothing more than a tournament option if building multiple lineups. In fact, some of the more inexpensive Padres bats, like Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe, could be used as cash game fillers in this spot given their price tags.

Dodgers change SP's for tonight; Kenta Maeda will start

Jose De Leon has been scratched from tonight's start, which will leave the SP duties to Kenta Maeda. The Padres bats should be downgraded slightly, as Maeda owns a solid 5.8 Hd-Sft% on the road and gets arguably the top match-up on the board this evening. Maeda is a fine DFS play, although he's been rather limited in terms of his ceiling, as he's exceeded six IP just once in his last nine turns. He has however averaged more than a strikeout per inning over that stretch.

Through limited innings, RHBs are getting the best of Jose De Leon

In limited inning, Jose De Leon is giving up hard contact to RHBs, allowing 40% hard contact on at-bats that have ended in contact. This would not be the end of the world if he were not also giving up 44% flyball rate. Jean Segura's 13% k-rate over the last week is a testament to how locked-in Segura is at the plate right now. Segura has a 130 wRC+ over the last seven days and a silly-good ISO of 0.293. For a leadoff man, Segura, much like Charlie Blackmon, offers immense upside with power and stolen base potential. Beginning a cash game lineup with Segura is a solid strategy, considering Segura's high floor and ceiling.

Jose De Leon struck out nine Padres in major league debut, but threw just 86 pitches

Jose De Leon struck out nine of 24 Padres in his major league debut and has had a strikeout rate above 32% at every level he has pitched at since 2013 in Rookie ball. That's an amazing profile, but he's in a bit of a tougher spot tonight even though the Yankees are far from an offensive juggernaut this season. The biggest concern tonight is that he was allowed to throw just 86 pitches in his debut and while 90 could get him through six here, that may be a best case scenario, in which he could conceivably cover a price tag right around $7.5K on either site. He does have exceptional upside though, so it's difficult to suggest players avoid him. De Leon will allow the occasional HR and even did so in his debut. RHBs have actually hit 13 of those 20 HRs since his promotion to AA last season, so perhaps Gary Sanchez (228 wRC+, .400 ISO vs RHP career) is still in play?
