Josh Rutledge scratched Friday; Dustin Pedroia replaces and will bat second

Rutledge has officially been scratched from the Boston Red Sox lineup for tonight's game against the Los Angeles Angels due to an unspecified reason. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Dustin Pedroia, who will take over the second base duties and bat second. This lineup change will move Andrew Benintendi down to the five-hole, while Hanley Ramirez, Jackie Bradley, and Sandy Leon each slide down one spot in the batting order to sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively.

Josh Rutledge scratched from Red Sox lineup Saturday; Deven Marrero replaces and will bat ninth

Rutledge has officially been scratched from the Boston Red Sox lineup for tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles due to an unspecified reason. He will be replaced in the lineup by Deven Marrero, who will bat ninth and play second base. Marrero will slot right into Rutledge's spot in the order, the remainder of the Red Sox batting remains unchanged.

Small change to Red Sox lineup: Bradley now hits ahead of Rutledge

The Sox have flipped Jackie Bradley Jr. and Josh Rutledge in the order, which leads to Bradley hitting 5th and Rutledge batting 6th.

David Ortiz has been scratched, moving Shaw up to the cleanup spot

David Ortiz has been scratched from the Red Sox lineup, so get him out of your lineups. Travis Shaw will be cleaning up now, and Josh Rutledge will enter the Sox lineup and bat 7th. While it has only been 10 ABs, a tiny sample size, Travis Shaw has a massive 1.400 OPS against R.A. Dickey.

Ortiz sits against young lefty Oakland prospect

Sean Manaea hasn't had much success through his two major league starts, but is a highly regarded LH pitching prospect for Oakland. So much so, that David Ortiz is sitting tonight, but he hadn't been hitting LHPs anyway and it's not that much of a bump for the rookie as he'll now have to battled RHBs in the top six slots. Boston has struggled against LHP (80 wRC+, 23.9 K%, 2.7 Hard-Soft%), but it's tough to see why with some strong RH bats in the lineup and they're a very tough offense to face at Fenway, so this might not be the spot to attack. It should be noted that Chris Young bats 5th with a 161 wRC+ vs LHP since last season at an affordable price and Josh Rutledge (159 wRC+ vs LHP since 2015) is even cheaper right behind him. The better RH bats at the top of the order all cost over $4K and appear to be moderate values, while Hanley Ramirez has just a 79 wRC+ vs LHP since last season. Boston does have the highest run projection (4.91) outside of Coors tonight, but that may just be because Manaea is an unknown among non-prospect following baseball fans.

Hanley Ramirez (flu) Scratched Wednesday

Hanley Ramirez was scratched Wednesday with flu like symptoms. Travis Shaw will slide over to 1B and Josh Rutledge will start at 3B and bat 7th.

Ortiz and Ramirez out of Boston lineup in Atlanta

Suddenly Julio Teheran might get a second look against this much weakened Boston lineup with Travis Shaw batting cleanup and Josh Rutledge batting fifth, although we can't say David Ortiz's absence isn't totally unexpected in an NL park. Unfortunately, Teheran has not exceed four strikeouts in any of his three home starts and carries ERA estimators well above four with an actual ERA above five. There's probably nowhere to confidently go on either side here aside from the suddenly hot Mookie Betts (181 wRC+, 46.7 Hard%) at the top of the lineup and a very affordable Travis Shaw (118 wRC+ vs RHP since last season) with the lineup upgrade and Teheran's .389 wOBA vs RHP since last season.
