JT Poston Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson are both out this week

News broke this afternoon that both Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson are out of this week's CJ Cup due to COVID-19. Finau tested positive last week but has not yet cleared the testing protocol in order to return. DJ tested positive today and will miss this week. Robby Shelton and J.T. Poston are now both into this week's field.

The Post Man is Checking a Lot of Boxes this Week

The Post Man is back at it this week. I ultimately expect him to be one of the highest owned golfers of the week. While that's not great, I can afford to eat some chalk with my chosen roster construction. He's one of the best putters in this field (11th in strokes gained putting), especially on Bermuda greens. Most of his best finishes on tour have come on Bermuda courses and he's had success here in the past. He's played here twice and made both cuts. Last year, he finished in a tie for 20th. He might be in the best form of his entire career, making 10 of his last 11 cuts with a win and four more top 20 finishes during that stretch. He played well in last week's Tournament of Champions, finishing in a tie for 11th where he gained the second most strokes putting. Yes, this is a volatile statistic week-to-week, but good putters are more likely to repeat good putting performances than bad putters. He makes a ton of birdies, he can catch fire with his irons, and he has one of the best short games in this field.

Loves Bermuda Greens

This pick hinges on his ownership. If Poston becomes the chalk in his price range, I will pivot to Chez Reavie. I expect my first three plays to be popular, so I have to create leverage on the field with the rest of my lineup. Poston is one of the best Bermuda putters on tour and his ball striking really improved last season. In fact, over the last 50 rounds, he’s ranked 17th in this field in greens in regulation and fifth in birdie or better percentage. He’s never played here before, but he’s in good form, he’s cheap, and he provides upside.

Field update for The PGA

Past PGA Champion Vijay Singh is the latest golfer to withdraw from this year's tournament. He will be replaced in the field by J.T. Poston. Due to the timing of this move, it remains to be seen if Poston will get added to DFS pricing pools. Kelly Kraft gained entry into the event yesterday when Justin Thomas withdrew and has been added to DFS pricing pools.

Solid Value

He’s yet another first timer in the list of GPP plays, but massive experience doesn’t seem to be a total prerequisite to success on this golf course. Poston has quietly been playing solid golf of late, and he showed some moxie last week to walk away with a top 40 finish after opening by being four over par through his first nine holes on Thursday. He quietly ranks 18th on Tour in par five scoring so far this year, and he has been efficient with his opportunities. The price tag is very passable on all the major sites this week, and Poston is a talented golfer who could be coming into his own. He has made six straight cuts with all of them going for top 40 finishes, and look for him to keep that rolling this week.

J.T. Poston playing with extra motivation towards the end of the season

As a player currently in need of his conditional status to enter PGA Tour events, J.T. Poston has a ton of motivation to keep playing well. Poston enters this week in the 109th position in the FedEx Cup standings and will need to finish the season inside the top 125 in order to gain full status next season. With extra incentive to keep playing well, Poston has made five out of six cuts including four top 30 or better finishes. In terms of course fit, Poston seems to play well on courses that are less than driver venues and should have an opportunity to score again this week. Using motivation to help make roster choices is never an easy task, but in the case of Poston, it's very clear to see that his game is trending in the correct direction at the right time. Reasonably priced across the industry, Poston's solid form and desire to keep his tour card, make this a great spot to use him as a source salary relief in all roster builds this week.

There is a lot on the line at the Wyndham Championship

At first glance, The Wyndham Championship appears to be another weak field PGA Tour event. With only 24 of the top 100 and 7 of the top 50 in the official golf rankings, the Wyndham Championship looks like a prime spot for post major championship letdown. With PGA Tour cards on the line, and the FedEx Cup playoff spots left to be secured, this week could prove to have more drama than first expected. The FedEx Cup playoffs are slated to start next week, and The Wyndham Championship serves as the last chance to improve or secure a spot to compete for the ten million dollar first place prize. For a good share of players in the field, this could be the end of the line. Not only is the Wyndham Championship about trying to finish in the top-125 and move onto the FedEx Cup playoffs, but this week is also about PGA Tour card survival. For those that are not in the top-125 of the FedEx Cup point total at weeks end the Web.Com Tour finals await. Those between 126 and 175 will be joined by the top-75 money list finishers on the Web.Com Tour. The top-25 of the Web.Com money list will automatically receive a card. The other 25 cards will go to players who earn the most-cumulative money in the four Web.Com Tour events. Once such player in danger of missing out on the FedEx Cup playoffs is PGA Tour Rookie JT Poston. Currently ranked in the 130th position in the FedEx Cup standings, Poston will need a good week in order to move on into the first week of the season ending race. As a graduate of last season's Web.Com Tour finals, Poston knows all too well what it takes to retain his tour card. With four top 25 finishes this season, Poston has shown the upside needed to play well on The PGA Tour. The position of needing to play well in order to move on makes for great drama and players like Poston are worth looking at when building GPP lineups.
