Julian Suri prepares to make his 2019 PGA Tour Debut

Like some other American golfers before him, Julian Suri has chosen to take the path less traveled in hopes of making it on the PGA Tour. Suri a former standout at Duke who turned pro some five years ago currently plays the majority of his golf on The European Tour. During the 2016 season, Suri went through all three stages of European qualifying school, but in the end, missed earning his card by one shot. A win in May of 2017 on the challenge tour was soon followed by his first European Tour later that summer propelling Suri to full-time status on The European Tour. Playing in his 4th career major and looking to improve on a very respectable T19 at last year's PGA, Suri is a value player worth looking at this week. Still searching for his chance to make a name in America, Suri has stats that line up well for Bethpage Black. Priced well below many other players of similar talent, a made cut and a top 20 or better finish would mean a big week for those who choose to take a chance on Suri.

Elite Value At This Salary

If you lined up every golfer in this field based on talent, there is no way that Suri would be this low in salary. His statistical ranks are rock solid on the European Tour, and his form is percolating at the right time, as well. Over the last month and a half, he has four straight top 20 finishes in Europe, and they are in relatively strong field events. Now, even the strongest European Tour events have weaker fields compared to this PGA Championship, but that is reflected in the price tag. Suri is a phenomenal value at this tag, and I think he’s worth an outright betting look at crazy 200-to-1 odds. He has the talent to contend here, and he finished 19th at last year’s PGA Championship at Bellerive.

Mid-Range Upside at Reasonable Ownership

Here is my favorite GPP play of the week. Suri does not get the national attention he deserves, and he certainly doesn’t get as much attention as some of the other rising stars on the PGA Tour. Much of that can be easily attributed to the fact that Suri has more pedigree on the European Tour than on the PGA Tour. That same narrative might ring true with DFS players, as there are plenty that don’t really know that much about Suri. He’s more mature than some think (he is 27 years old; not a teenager), and he’s a pretty darn good golfer, too. Heck, even the PGA Championship leaderboard had him pegged wrong, as Suri posted a screenshot of a Jason Day photo that was shown next to Suri’s name on the leaderboard. This rising start finished inside the top 30 in each of the last two majors, and it would not be a surprise to see him contend this week in an ugly field. Shhhhhhhhh.
