Blue liner continues to chew minutes in absence of Letang
It has become redundant talking about Justin Schultz while Kris Letang is out, but again, he checks in around $4,500 on both DraftKings and FanDuel which makes him a cash game staple. The matchup is not great as Pittsburgh is on the road, but the Penguins could see Antti Niemi tonight. In any case, Schultz has picked up a goal and three assists over his last three games as he has seen at least 25 minutes in each contest. In a matchup with an up-tempo Montreal team, Schultz again seems like a good bet to find the scoresheet as skating on the Penguin's top power play offers immense opportunity. There are a number of strong options on defense tonight, but Schultz is the best bang for your buck given the workload and cheap price tag.
You know what to do when Kris Letang is out
We saw it time and time again when Kris Letang was out last season - Justin Schultz would step up and log massive minutes. Last time out, after both Letang and Brian Dumolin did not make it out for the second period, Schultz ended up seeing 30 minutes of ice time. Not only will Schultz soak up minutes, he will see time on the team's potent top power play unit. Justin checks in at just $3,900 on DraftKings and $4,500 on FanDuel. It should not take more than a week before he is sitting at $5,500+, so take advantage in all formats.
Blue liner has a point in both games since lengthy absence
While Justin Schultz is never one to play big minutes, he is a cheap route to gain exposure to a powerful Pittsburgh offense. Since returning from a length absence on 2/16, Schultz has played in two games, logging 17-18 minutes of ice time. During these two games, Schultz has picked up two assists and four shots on goal. Although New Jersey has dominated the Penguins this season, the Penguins should be good for several goals. New Jersey is allowing 3.56 goals per game after the All-Star break - the second worst mark in the Eastern Conference. Without the usual blue line studs (Brent Burns, Erik Karlsson, Thomas Chabot) in action tonight, Schultz is a viable route to spend up elsewhere.
Top Option on the Blue Line
This may look similar to yesterday, but with another plus matchup on deck (this one on home ice), the Pittsburgh Penguins two offensive rear guards are at the top of my list again tonight. The Montreal Canadiens are really struggling these days, winning just once over their last nine games, while allowing the seventh-most goals against per game in the month of March. On top of that, the Canadiens continue to whiff while short-handed, ranking dead last on the penalty kill since the All-Star break. If you can afford him, Letang is the top play on the blue line tonight, and Schultz may be the top point-per-dollar play on the slate. Any way you slice it, both defensemen have multi-point upside in this very favorable matchup.
Down season for defenseman creates opportunity in up-tempo game
Justin Schultz is finding his groove lately as last time out he potted the game-winning goal in overtime, and the game before that, Schultz picked up an assist. Justin (FanDuel - $4,600, DraftKings - $4,500 and FantasyDraft - $8,700) will not cost an arm and a leg if trying to gain exposure to the Penguins. Schultz sees sufficient power play time, and the Pittsburgh Penguins in general should be drooling to take on the National Hockey League's third-worst penalty kill (75.1%). While Kris Letang is the premier option on defense in a game that should be the highest scoring of the night, Schultz is a worthwhile pivot in tournaments.
Depth Scoring In Potential Shootout
If you're looking for an under the radar line stack tonight, consider the third line of Pittsburgh which features Phil Kessel, Dominik Simon, and newly acquired Derick Brassard. With a whopping 44 points in 33 home games, Kessel should have no problems improving upon his success on home ice this season against a Calgary Flames team that lacks the depth to slow down Pittsburgh's three lined scoring attack. Further improving this line's outlook tonight is the fact that home ice advantage will allow head coach Mike Sullivan to get Kessel and his new third line matched up against one of the weaker defensive lines of Calgary, setting the stage for a monster performance in a game that should play at a rapid pace, with plenty of shots exchanged between both teams.
Cheap Penguin blue liner makes for interesting tournament target
Picking on the New York Islanders is something you will want to do in all formats. Pittsburgh's depth can complicate things, but that also creates opportunity for someone like Justin Schultz who is priced cheaply across the industry (FanDuel - $4,300 and DraftKings - $4,200). Schultz seems ample power play time and could feast against an Islander team that owns the Eastern Conference's worst penalty kill percentage (74.7%). Defense is loaded on this stretched out Saturday slate, but in this price range, Justin Schultz makes a lot of sense given the number of studs available such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Connor McDavid.
Multi-Point Potential on the Blue Line
The New York Islanders are a defensive dumpster fire, ranking 26th overall in the National Hockey League in CA/60, 29th in HDCA/60 and 31st in SCA/60, resulting in them allowing a league high 3.63 goals against per game this season. Over the past month, the Islanders have actually been worse defensively, allowing 4.20 goals against per game (by far the most in the game), while toting the leagues worst penalty kill. This means the Pittsburgh Penguins defensemen should have a productive night at both even strength and on the power play. The Penguins blue line is almost full healthy, giving us three solid options. Kris Letang is clearly the top option if you can afford him, with Justin Schultz and Olli Maatta making great secondary options at a moderate price. Regardless of which way you go, all three defensemen have plenty of potential tonight in this very favorable matchup.
Bargain price-tag for an offensive minded blue-liner
With Kris Letang back to full health, Justin Schultz has been bumped off the fantasy radar to some degree this season. Despite racking uy 45 points over the last 55 games for the Penguins last season (and owning a respectable eight points in 19 games in '17-18), he currently finds himself far too cheap across the industry. Schultz is routinely seeing 20+ minutes of ice-time per game and has dished out three assists over the last two games. He quarterback's the Penguin's second power-play unit, which should bode well for him considering Philadelphia's troubling 74.7% penalty kill.
