Luck Runs Out

Jon Lester has a 1.06 ERA through his first three starts of the season but don't let that fool you. A closer look at his advanced metrics will tell you he's been outrageously lucky to start the season. Despite his "success" to start the year, Lester has been unable to miss bats with an absolutely ridiculous 3.9 SwStr% and a poor 13.6 K%. To Lester's credit, he has done a pretty solid job generating soft contact (23.5 Soft%) but he's still been extremely lucky on balls in play (.120 BABIP) and stranding runners (94.8 LOB%). If you don't understand what any of that means, don't worry, just jam in as many Brewer hitters as you can and hope Lester's luck runs out.

Wrigley Wind

Seasoned DFS'ers know that as soon as you see warm temps and wind blowing out in Wrigley you stack the game every possible way. I am *hoping* that this being the first Wrigley Wind game of the season combined with it being Sunday that we see somewhat reduced ownership on this game but it's highly doubtful. Per Kevn Roth's WeatherEdge tool, in 23 prior games at Wrigley with similar conditions as today, HR's increased by 73.6%, Total Runs by 32.3%, and ERA by 25.9%. Per Kevn Roth's WeatherEdge tool, in 23 prior games at Wrigley with similar conditions as today, HR's increased by 73.6%, Total Runs by 32.3%, and ERA by 25.9%.

Top Hitter on the Slate

This is the perfect matchup for him. Even though it is a R/R matchup, you have a hitter in Hiura who has been better against RHP and a pitcher in Hoffman who has reverse splits, allowing numbers that are much worse to RHBs. The Brewers are still fighting for the division and should play their regulars today, as well. Hiura owns a .423 wOBA and a .321 ISO against RHP and is an elite option in this spot.

Brewers currently have 7.24 implied total in Coors

While many teams on the slate don’t have much to play for at this point, the Brewers are still gunning for the NL Central. They face Chi Chi Gonzalez tonight in Coors, who has a 5.68 ERA / 5.53 xFIP, 1.53 WHIP, 3.5% K-BB and 8.1% SwStr. This is even despite 7 of 11 starts, and 9 of 13 total appearances coming away from Coors. Chi Chi has posted a 6.41 ERA, .384 wOBA and 1.83 WHIP in 4 starts in Coors. Keston Hiura (.381 xwOBA vs. RHP this year) Yasmani Grandal (.342), Mike Moustakas (.332), Lorenzo Cain (.329), Eric Thames (.322), Trent Grisham (.310), Ben Gamel (.281) and Orlando Arcia (.265) are all in the projected lineup for the Brewers tonight. Hiura has been their hottest hitter with a .381 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks, while Gamel has been the coldest with a .198 mark. On Draftkings all bats are $4.9k or more besides Gamel ($4k) and Arcia ($3.7k) who will likely be hitting in the 7-8 spots. There is a bit more flexibility on Fanduel, as only Moustakas and Hiura are above $4k.

The Brewers may be worth another shot against Wacha's board worst .364 xwOBA

To say that Milwaukee backers were disappointed last night would be an understatement. However, that fact may be part of the reason players should consider going back to that well tonight. While the park in St Louis generally suppresses home runs and run scoring in general, conditions suggest that may not be the case tonight (Weather Edge and umpire ratings are available to premium subscribers) and Michael Wacha has some of the worst numbers on the board, including the highest xwOBA for the season (.364) and at home since last season (.360). He combines a 7.3 K-BB% with a 22.8 HR/FB and has allowed multiple HRs in four of his last six starts. Slightly different from the case last night, Wacha has struggled with batters from both sides of the plate over the last year (RHBs .397 wOBA, .375 xwOBA - LHBs 331 wOBA, .345 xwOBA), which puts not only the left-handed power of Christian Yelich (218 wRC+, .435 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Mike Moustakas (110 wRC+, .257 ISO), and Yasmani Grandal (115 wRC+, .201 ISO) in play, but also Keston Hiura (168 wRC+, .318 ISO). Despite nearly being no-hit last night, each of the batters mentioned still carries a wRC+ above 140 over the last seven days. In addition, while Trent Grisham has struggled (73 wRC+, .190 ISO vs RHP), an appearance at the top of the lineup for less than $3K on DraftKings might help players afford Hiura and Yelich above $5K. After last night’s performance, it’s possible ownership on Milwaukee bats will be down tonight, while they are still projected right around a healthy five runs once again.

Brewers bats remain underpriced on DK despite another great matchup

The Brewers face Erick Fedde this afternoon, who has lucked his way to a 4.09 ERA. He has a 5.17 xFIP, 5.58 SIERA, 3.2% K-BB and 7.6% SwStr that scream regression. Fedde does get groundballs at an elite rate (52.2%) but that’s not enough to offset 1.33 K/BB ratio. Fedde has also allowed a .364 xwOBA, 8% barrel rate and 87.9 MPH aEV. Fedde has been a bit worse vs lefties (.379 xwOBA vs. LHB, .346 xwOBA vs. RHB since 2018) but can definitely be targeted with hitters from both sides of the plate. Christian Yelich (.425 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Keston Hiura (.364), Mike Moustakas (.347), Eric Thames (.324), Trent Grisham (.313), Manny Pina (.312) and Ben Gamel (.299) are all good options in the Brewers’ order. Grisham continues to be underpriced as he is again leading off and is just $3.5k on Draftkings. Thames has been moved up to 2nd in the order for this game and is just $4.3k. Mike Moustakas is batting 5th at $4.1k, followed by Manny Pina at just $2.9k. Hiura and Yelich will cost $5k+ but are still very much in play, especially Yelich. Currently, the Brewers have a 5.50 implied line vs. Fedde and the Nats.

Lots of value in Brewers’ lineup tonight

Brewers’ bats will likely be very popular across all contests tonight as they are in a good spot vs. Anibal Sanchez and affordable as well. Sanchez does have a 3.75 ERA on the year, but a 5.07 xFIP, 5.04 SIERA and 11.1% K-BB show that he is very likely to regress in the ERA department. Since 2018 Sanchez has shown about even L/R splits and can be targeted from both sides of the plate tonight. The Brewers have a good amount of hitters in their order tonight that have had success vs. RHP this year: Christian Yelich (.432 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Keston Hiura (.386), Trent Grisham (.361), Yasmani Grandal (.345), Mike Moustakas (.340), Ryan Braun (.329) and Eric Thames (.320) are all great options. Trent Grisham is leading off at just $2.9k on Draftkings and is one of the best value plays on the slate. Grandal follows him in the order at just $3.7k. Moustakas, Braun and Thames will all be $3.7k or less on DK and will bat 5-6-7 in the order. Hiura will bat 4th and is affordable as well with a $4.3k price tag. The Brewers currently have a 4.74 implied line vs. Sanchez and the Nationals.

Brewers lineup in a great spot vs. 21 year old Allard in Miller Park

Kolby Allard gets his first MLB start of 2019 (and 2nd of his young career) for the Rangers tonight vs. the Brewers in Miller Park. Allard’s stats in AAA this year were nothing to write home about, as he posted a 4.17 ERA, 4.65 FIP and 4.38 xFIP over 110 innings and 20 starts. Projection systems have him as a roughly 5.50 ERA guy going forward, although that number is inflated a bit because his home park (Globe Life Park) is a tough environment for pitchers. Still, Allard is a guy to target until further notice, especially with a lineup like the Brewers’ that has a number of good options vs. LHP. Christian Yelich (.425 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Manny Pina (.421), Yasmani Grandal (.392), Mike Moustakas (.375), Ryan Braun (.355), Lorenzo Cain (.344) and Keston Hiura (.336) are all great options in the projected order tonight. Pina costs just $3.2k on Draftkings and is a great value if he is indeed in the order tonight. Lorenzo Cain should lead off and is just $4.1 on DK, while Yasmani Grandal ($4.2k) and Mike Moustakas ($4.4k) are nice values as well. Also working in Milwaukee’s favor tonight will be a very hitter-friendly ump calling balls and strikes with Stu Scheurwater behind the plate. The Brewers currently have a 5.63 implied total.

Keston Hiura (quad) scratched Monday; Tyler Saladino replaces

Hiura has been scratched from the Milwaukee Brewers original confirmed lineup and will not start in Monday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds due to left quad tightness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Tyler Saladino, who will now play second base and slot into the eighth spot in the order, which bumps Jesus Aguilar and Orlando Arcia up to fifth and seventh, respectively. However, the remainder of the Brewers lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Sonny Gray at home this evening.

Overlooked Bats In A Perceived Bad Matchup

Madison Bumgarner is typically not someone I go out of my way to target against, but with the big ballpark downgrade in Miller Park and the Brewers sporting a 4.8 implied run total currently, the righty bats in this lineup may go significantly overlooked tonight. Lorenzo Cain, Ryan Braun, Jesus Aguilar & Keston Hiura are all under $4k on DraftKings and get the platoon advantage over Bumgarner who is pretty much a league-average pitcher in this split over the past two years (20.1% K, .322 wOBA, .177 ISO). None may be cash plays on tonight's slate, but add Yasmani Grandal in the mix and you have a 5-man stack with well enough power upside that will likely be lower owned in large-field GPPs.
