Defenseman Starting to Produce

Kevin Shatternkirk has been a huge disappointment this year for the Rangers, registering just 12 points in 43 games to start the year. While his production lately isn't remarkable, it's a noted improvement over his year-to-date averages. He's seeing time on the number one power play, a unit clicking on all cylinders. The matchup is also favorable with the Kings coming to town, one of the worst teams in the NHL.

Multi-Point Potential on the Blue Line

The Buffalo Sabres are not a good hockey team, and they have struggled all year long, but they have been an absolute disaster in the month of January, allowing 25 goals against over their last six games (an average of 4.1), which is second most in the National Hockey League this month. Making matters worse, the Sabres penalty kill has been atrocious this month, once again, ranking second-last overall. With a plus matchup on home ice, there is no denying the New York Rangers offense is in play, however, with the Blue Shirts offense being so deep, it remains very difficult predicting where their scoring will come from, so instead I will look to Kevin Shattenkirk for my Rangers exposure. The veteran power play quarterback has been quiet of late, but this a great spot for him to bust out tonight, and I think we see him find his way onto the score sheet at both even strength and with the man advantage.

Great spot for the Ranger's Power-play QB

It hasn't been the strongest of starts for Shattenkirk with his home-town team, but the veteran blue-liner still owns a respectable 23 points through 40 games. Shattdueces is locked into 20 minutes of ice-time on a nightly basis and quarterbacks the Ranger's dangerous #1 power-play unit where he'll battle an Arizona team that has surrendered a Western Conference worst 3.50 goals against per game this season. His slow start to the season has kept his asking price in check and his shot volume (87 shots in 40 games) gives him a high enough floor to comfortably target in all formats.

Power-play QB against a struggling penalty kill

If you can't find a way to afford Erik Karlsson, Kevin Shattenkirk is a solid fall-back option this evening. He snapped out of a mini scoring slump with an assist against the Buffalo Sabres at the Winter Classic and will turn his attention to a Chicago team who he knows quite well from his days in St. Louis. With just 23 points in 39 games in a New York Rangers uniform, Shattenkirk is likely a bit disappointed with his start with his home-town team, but he's particularly intriguing tonight since he quarterback's New York's top power-play unit where he'll get a crack at a Chicago team that posted a dreadful 70.0% penalty kill during the month of December.

Target This Top Line In A Sneaky Shootout

If you are looking to maximize the potential of a line stack tonight, look to the top line of New York which features Buchnevich, Kreider, and the expected return of Zibanejad. They draw a great matchup against a depleted Anaheim team that has been repeatedly been bailed out by strong goaltending this season despite entering tonight's game with the highest xGA/60 among available road teams. Also featured on New York's top power play unit, this trio should be very active on the man advantage tonight against a tired Ducks team that will be playing on consecutive nights a long way away from home. In a game that should play at a fast pace between two struggling defensive teams, loading up on the top line for New York could pay major dividends tonight.

Multi-Point Potential on the Blue Line

The Carolina Hurricanes have the highest projected goal total on this short slate, and we should be looking to target them in all formats this evening. This brings our attention to Jeff Skinner, who happens to be the main attraction for the Hurricanes offense. Carolinas young sniper has been red hot of late (three points and 12 shots on goal in his last two contests), and he has multi-goal potential tonight at the KeyBank Center. Skinner remains moderately priced across the industry and he is a great addition to your cash game lineup. In GPPs, you can certainly play Skinner with his linemates, or with Noah Hanifin as a mini-stack.

This defenceman is productive across the board

Kevin Shattenkirk is looking solid in his first season in New York. He makes for a solid play because while he produces solid offensively, he contributes across the board with his peripherals. He averages 2.36 shots per game and 1.6 blocks per game which gives him a solid floor. His 18 points in 25 games gives him a solid upside as well. He plays on the top power play unit as well, further increasing tournament upside.

Big free agent signing paying off exceptionally in the offensive end

In his first year in New York, Kevin Shattenkirk is proving his worth, at least offensively. He's got 17 points in 18 games, and looks to continue that tonight against a Chicago team that is being bailed out by their goaltender. While Corey Crawford has been exceptional this season, the team giving up as many shot attempts as they are, will slowly regress. The Rangers haven't been generating many shots as a team, but Shattenkirk is getting just under two shots per game which is acceptable. The offence should be there for the Rangers tonight and although he's expensive, Shattenkirk is a great play.

Big Potential In The Big Apple

If you are looking to maximize the potential of a line stack tonight, look towards the top line of New York which features Mika Zibanejad, Rick Nash, and Mats Zuccarello. They draw a great matchup against a weak Islanders squad that allowed the second most scoring chances on the road last season among available teams tonight. Also featured on New York's top power play unit, this trio should be very active on the man advantage tonight against an Islanders' penalty kill that has surrendered at least one power play goal in four of their first six games this season. In a game that should play at a fast pace between two poor defensive teams, loading up on the top line for New York could pay major dividends tonight.

Top scoring defenseman tonight?

Like the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Pittsburgh Penguins also play high-event hockey, and their 1980s style of play has hurt them defensively in 2017-18. The Penguins rank 30th overall in CA/60, and they sit dead last in both SCA/60 and GA/60. As a result, Pittsburgh has allowed the second-most goals against per game (4.17) in the National Hockey League this season, and we can certainly attack them again tonight at Madison Square Garden. On top of that, the Penguins have also been the most undisciplined team in the game, leading the league with 32 minor penalties taken this year. Whether it is at even strength or on the power play, Shattenkirk should see ample opportunity to hit the score sheet in this one.
