Louis Oosthuizen Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Built for the Majors

We currently have Oosty projected at less than 10% ownership, but I expect that to go up as the week progresses. He tends to play his best golf in majors (he hasn’t missed a cut at the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, or the Masters since 2013) and for the first time in a very long time, he’s actually grading out as a solid option in my model. I usually have to ignore the numbers when I click his name, but that’s not the case this week. He’s gained strokes off the tee and on approach in each of his last four events, posting finishes of T6, T33, T13, and T25. While we obviously have a different course on our hands this week, he has five straight top 25 finishes at the U.S. Open. His game is rounding into form at the perfect time and I love the price point.

Risk/Reward GPP Appeal

This could be one of the first times that I have ever written up Louis Oosthuizen in this space. Like many others, I am often afraid of the withdrawal risk whenever Oosty tees it up. While it is always a bit of a concern, he hasn’t withdrawn in the middle of a tournament in quite some time (knock on wood). He is also playing with house money here after being the last golfer to make it into the BMW Championship at #70 in the standings. He was solid off the tee last week and had a good short game working. While he doesn’t stand out in any one area, he’s solid throughout his bag, and the ownership will be low as usual. There’s plenty of leverage in a no cut event with golfers like this, and that makes Oosthuizen a super appealing GPP risk/reward option.

Louis Oosthuizen continues to fly under the radar

Louis Oosthuizen does not have the best reputation in the world of DFS golf. For a player who is known for traveling with his own custom mattress, the bad back withdrawal narrative is very much alive in the mid of the DFS golf gamer. If you can put that narrative to the side, Oosthuizen has both the talent level and course fit to really be a difference-maker at The Northern Trust Open. In 20 rounds at TPC Boston Oosthuizen has gained almost an average of 2 shots total per round. Currently, outside the projected bubble to play in next week’s BMW Championship, Oosthuizen will need a good week if he has any hopes to extend his season. With a current projected ownership level of less than 6%, it would not take much to gain a bit of leverage on the field for those who like to MME large-field tournaments. With Doc Redman and Harris English expected to soak up a ton of ownership in the sub $7,600 price range, the addition of Oosthuizen to your player pool is a great way to differentiate your lineups this week.

Bridesmaid at all Four Majors

This section is all about golfers that are just as likely to post a top 10 as they are to miss the cut. These are plays that I plan to be over-weight on in MME given their upside and low ownership. Oosthuizen loves to withdraw from events, but he tends to play well in stacked fields and on difficult golf courses. This is why I target him in almost every major. He’s been pretty good on Pete Dye courses in his career and finished T7 in his lone appearance at Harbour Town back in 2014. He’s a world class golfer that can get hot with his irons and/or putter at any time.

Louis Oosthuizen under priced compared to his talent

A bad reputation is often a hard thing for a DFS player to overcome. Louis Oosthuizen has somewhat of a bad rap for withdrawing from events due to injury. If you can get over this type of view then adding Oosthuizen to your roster builds is a great way to gain upside for the week. With a proven track record of playing well at some of the biggest events in the world, Oosthuizen is a golfer we can look to as a great source of value this week. Looking at the price compared to talent and Oosthuizen really stands out even in a very talented field. Of the players in his price range, Oosthuizen is really one of the few players who you can say has the pedigree to win this type of event.

Majors and WGC Events

My last play of the week could dip below 10% ownership, although that could be a pipe dream. Oosty has the reputation of a golfer that withdraws every other tournament. While he does WD more than most, it's typically when he gets off to a bad start, so it's not like he would have helped your lineups anyway. I love targeting him in two types of events -- majors and WGCs. He seems to play his best on the biggest stage and on the most difficult courses. He finished last season on a high note, but then took two months off before returning to action last week. There was a little rust, but he did hit over 70% of greens in regulation and finished the week with 12 birdies and an eagle. He has played this event seven times over the last 10 years, posting four top 15 finishes during that stretch.

A Class Golfer in This Field

When he’s healthy and competing, Oosthuizen is a world class golfer who is capable of winning any event. I am of the belief that he’s not going to pull one of his random withdrawal stunts in an overseas event where there is no cut, though we can never be certain of this. What we can be certain of is that his ownership is always lower than it should be because of that risk, and he is coming off four sub-70 rounds and a top five finish last week. His statistics never pop as much as with some other golfers, but much of that is attributable to the fact that we often see Oosthuizen only tee it up in the more difficult field events. He’s a class golfer in this field. Fire him up again with confidence here in Korea, especially in GPP formats. The price tag remains very reasonable.

Louis Oosthuizen set to make his season debut

Louis Oosthuizen will head into his first career CIMB Classic this week but by no means a stranger to this course. Like many other successful international players, Oosthuizen started his career out by competing on The European Tour. One of Oosthuizen's 13 worldwide victories came at TPC Kuala Lumpur during the 2012 Maybank Open. Oosthuizen narrowly missed out on defending his title the following year as he finished second to Lee Westwood. Over his last 8 rounds at TPC Kuala Lumpur, Oosthuizen is 28 under par and heads into this week as a player worthy of a roster spot in your DFS builds. Currently projected at sub 7% ownership Oosthuizen makes for an interesting piece in a balanced lineup build. While most will gravitate towards a stars and scrubs roster build, the addition of Oosthuizen and other similarly priced golfers is a great way to gain leverage for the week.

Louis Oosthuizen set to make his 2018 PGA debut

With the year's first major just around the corner and a handful of big events to be played over the next few weeks, we begin to see some of the bigger foreign-born players make their way into PGA Tour events. Currently ranked inside the top 30 in the world, Louis Oosthuizen will make his 2018 PGA debut at this week's Honda Classic. Known for his propensity to withdraw from events due to a bad back, Oosthuizen often goes overlooked by the large majority of the DFS community. Early week ownership projections have Oosthuzien trending towards a fairly low number thus making him an interesting pivot off other similar priced players. The 35 yeard old Oosthuizen played surprisingly consistent golf last season as he made 17 of 18 cuts last year on tour finishing one spot out of making it to the tour championship. The choice to roster Oosthuizen always comes with risk, but he should have the game to play well this week. Oosthuizen made the cut at last year's Honda Classic finishing inside the top 25. If you are looking to take some shots based upon ownership numbers, Oosthuizen has the talent and upside to more than pay off his price this week and could end up being a great leverage play in large field GPP's.

Louis Oosthuizen continues to fly under the radar

Louis Oosthuizen is in the middle of having a very solid year. In sixteen starts this season, this former major winner has posted 9 top 25 or better finishes. Currently ranked in the 26th position in the FedEx Cup Standings, Oosthuizen is on the verge of making it to The Tour Championship for the third time in the last four seasons. In the DFS golf arena, foreign born players tend to go a little under owned. Unless you are a super star like McIlroy or Day, players like Oosthuizen struggle to gain popularity. This week's ownership projections for the Dell Technologies Championship fall very true to this pattern and Oosthuizen is slated to fall in a very low ownership percentile. This 20th ranked player in the world has a very solid course history at the TPC Of Boston. In addition to a runner up finish, Oosthuizen has two top 12 or better finishes in his other two starts at The Dell Technologies Championship. When you factor in predicted lower ownership with the upside that he provides, Oosthuizen becomes a great leverage play for The Dell Technologies Championship.
