Luke Donald Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Showdown preview round three of The Honda Classic
As expected there were plenty of big numbers to be had over the first two days of play at PGA National. With plenty of big names playing poorly over the first two days, players like Luke Donald and Brendan Steele find themselves at the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend. Steele was in a similar position earlier this year at the Sony Open but was unable to seal the deal ultimately loosing to Cameron Smith in a playoff. Former number one player in the world Luke Donald finds himself near the lead on the weekend for the first since the 2017 RBC Heritage Classic. As a past champion of this event, Donald does have positive course history to build on, but at this point in his career, it's safe to say that we are not dealing with the same golfer. With a two-round scoring average of 144, PGA National did not yield many low rounds over the first two days of play. With hard course conditions through the weekend, the relative value of par golf really increases. There will be birdies made this weekend, but I would be surprised to see a sub 65 round. Of course, these are the best players in the world, and anything is possible, but your focus this weekend is to target players who understand how to attack this course. Players who fire at pins and miss will make big numbers, so unlike other showdown slates golfers who mix in a ton of pars with an occasional birdie will grade out as good plays. When looking at stats over the first two rounds I like taking shots on guys who have hit the ball well but just have not made any putts. In a birdie fest, this type of play will usually not work, but with par being a good score you can feel a little more comfortable with this type of play. PGA Tour rookie Matthew NeSmith is a player that fits in this type of play nicely. Over the first two rounds, NeSmith has hit 22 of 36 greens, but with almost 2 putts per GIR, he only has one birdie for the week. NeSmith has proven to be a good ball striker early in his career, and with a few more converted birdie opportunities this weekend he could end up being a great source of value.
Luke Donald in need of good course history to turn his career around
The choice to roster Luke Donald opens up an interesting debate between excellent course history and poor current form. This former number one player in the world owns an amazing course history at Harbour Town. In twelve starts at this event, Donald has finished inside the top 3 an amazing 7 times. Outside of winning at Harbour Town, Donald has absolutely owned this course. Currently, in great danger of falling outside of the top 200 in the world, Donald has really struggled to find the game that once had him in the discussion of the best player to not win a major. Outside of his T2 at last years RBC Heritage Donald has only two top 40 finishes in his last 18 starts on Tour. Fueled by his excellent course history, Donald is trending as the 7th highest owned golfer on the week. The dichotomy known as course history vs current form will come to a boil this week, and the added addition of factoring in projected ownership makes this a great spot to consider a fade on the struggling Donald. While it would not surprise anyone to see Donald play well this week, his current form makes it a bit harder roster him this week.
Charles Howell III among top course horses for the Valspar Championship
Course history enthusiasts struggled last week with sparse details of the Club de Golf Chapultepec course for the WGC-Mexico Championship. This week’s venue at Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead Course) offers over 15 years of PGA Tour data. Even though the Copperhead Course is long at 7,340 yards, it’s the ball-strikers and not the bombers that traditionally excel. The tight, tree-lined fairways forces emphasis on hitting fairways and second-shot approaches to the green. Copperhead is famous for one of the toughest 3-hole stretches in golf: the 16, 17 and 18 “Snake Pit”. Charles Howell III has placed in the top 15 in each of the last three years at Copperhead including a T5 finish in 2016. CHIII has been in great form all season with four Top-15 finishes already but he is no longer a strong value play as his DraftKings salary has risen to $9,400. Possible pivots to lower-priced players with strong Copperhead course history includes Kevin Na ($8.7K), Jason Dufner ($7.9K) and Luke Donald ($7.8K).
