Martin Laird Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Martin Laird looks to build on a solid course history
The new top 65 cut rule has really made it hard to nail down value plays in terms of getting all six golfers through to the weekend. This is really the first week of the season we have a few top players at the top end of the salary pool that we want to force in stars and scrubs lineup builds. When you are looking for value it's extremely important to narrow down why a certain player stands out in terms of performing over his salary point. Typically we look into how a player is performing in terms of recent form or we look to see if the player has the right course fit( course history). Martin Laird is a player that stands out in just one of those areas this week. Looking to bounce back from a missed cut Laird tee it up at the familiar grounds of Silverado C.C with hopes of a bounce-back week. In addition to making five straight cuts at this event, Larid has posted 16 under par or better rounds in his last 20 rounds at Silverado C.C. Trending towards a low ownership number Larid makes for a great play in terms of both value and leverage for the week.
Martin Laird stands out as a good value this week
TPC Scottsdale is a course where we typically target players who excel at gaining strokes either off the tee and or on approach. Using players with good course history is not necessarily a must, but when you see a player who has done well in the past at this event it does make it easier to pull the trigger on adding him into your roster builds. Martin Laird is that type of player for this course. If you are new to DFS golf, then you have yet to experience the turmoil associated with adding Laird to your squad. This week however Laird makes sense as a solid source of value. Laird has gained an average of 4.5 shots tee to green in his last five starts at The WMPO. This solid play has resulted in Laird having five made cuts with three top ten or better showings. Laird is what you might consider a specialist so to speak, and this is the type of venue where we can feel good about having some shares. This Scottsdale resident played well at times last week and appears to be headed in the right direction for an event that has suited his game in the past.
Martin Laird stands out as a solid value play with good course history
At this point in his career, it's safe to say that we know Martin Laird is about average in terms of PGA Tour talent. With three career wins and almost 17 million in earnings, Laird plays the type of golf that can make cuts and occasionally post a top ten or better. The sample size of his run at this event is a great example of his career. In nine starts at The Shriners Open, Laird has seven made cuts including a win and a second place finish. Priced accordingly to his talent level Laird is a player who makes sense as a value play for the week. While you should not expect a win from party Marty this week his range of outcomes makes this PGA Tour veteran a solid source of salary relief for the week. A top 25 or better on course that Laird has played well in the past should do the trick in terms of paying off his salary.
Martin Laird looks to improve on an excellent course history
There is always an interesting debate on the importance of course history in DFS golf. Regardless of what side of the debate you are on it never hurts to see a player with good past performances at a venue. Martin Laird heads into this week with a very good track record at Silverado Country Club. Over his last 16 rounds at this course, Laird has gained almost a total of 24 strokes. With three top 20 or better finishes in his last four starts at Silverado Laird is a player worth looking at in terms of both salary relief and upside for the first event of the 2018-2019 season. On DraftKings Laird stands out as one of the better value plays on the slate, and at $7300 he should be considered a great option for cash games this week. Many players will gravitate towards the shiny new toys and pick the fresh faces from the Web.com Finals, but in a cash game setting, it's never a bad idea to go with a proven commodity.
All-Around Game that is Built for this Course
Laird should be popular this week. He’s the eighth ranked golfer in my model, yet he’s only $7,900 on DraftKings. He’s been in good form and he’s a great fit for the course. He’s ranked in the top 40 in strokes gained off the tee and on approaches. He’s also ranked in the top ten in birdie or better percentage, par four scoring, par five scoring, and strokes gained putting. His game is solid all-around and he’s just too cheap in a field that seriously lacks depth.
A Sensible Mid-Range Option
On a projected points per dollar basis, it’s really hard to argue with Laird this week. His form is solid, his game fits this type of course nicely, and he seems under-priced in DFS given the strength of this field (especially on DK). His approach game is right around Tour average, but he has been sharp around the greens with a strokes gained ranking of 13th in that department. Throw in six made cuts in his last seven starts with three top 15 finishes, and he checks the box for the current form angle as well. Laird is a great mid-range option that is viable in all DFS formats here.
Great Scot in the Wind
The course this week allows golfers to grip it and rip it. Poor tee shots are heavily penalized but if you can mash it off the tee, you are at a big advantage. That benefits Laird who is on the record for feeling comfortable here, "This course sets up nice for me. Lot of the tee shots that I feel comfortable with. I like to move the ball left to right and there seems to be a number of tee shots out here if you can cut it, it helps." Looking at the ratio of big rounds recorded on driver-heavy courses since 2014, there are only five better in the field (Sergio, Kuchar, Hoffman, Chappell, and Scott). Three of those golfers are past champions here. Laird is also a previous winner here but he's a whole lot cheaper.
Using predicted ownership to find pivot plays
Ownership projections can be a very useful tool to help build successful rosters. Game selection will often determine how a player uses a tool such as ownership projections. For cash game players the optimal strategy usually consists of playing the value plays regardless of ownership. Tournament roster construction often looks to find a lower owned pivot play around the same price. This week we have a prime opportunity to fade what appears to be a popular mid ranged play in Luke List. At $8,300 List is projected to be one of the highest owned players on DraftKings for the week. While his salary and opportunity make List a great play for cash, we could easily see the merit for pivoting to other players in tournaments. Having never won on Tour, List is the type of player that ultimately makes for an easy fade. Even if he plays well, there is a very small possibility that List performs at a clip that makes him a must play for the week. For tournaments, I like the idea of paying up to get a player like Martin Laird or J.B. Holmes. As a past champion of this event, Laird at somewhat low ownership levels stands out as a great pivot play. With the ability to make a ton of birdies, a player like J.B. Holmes always provides a bit of interest in large field GPP's. Holmes is the type of player that can pay off his salary in light of a top ten finish. The process of using projected ownerships is a great way to help you grow as a player. Even if you don't find a pivot play, the time spent thinking about the merits of making such a move will serve you well in the long run.
