Adrian Peterson will start Sunday, snap count depends on knee
Peterson will return to action for the first time since undergoing knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. While he'll get the start, it's highly doubtful he receives his normal complement of snaps and touches. Although some reports indicated he would be eased back in, Ian Rapoport reported that he doesn't have a firm snap count. Rather, the Vikings will play it by ear based on how his knee feels. This pretty much eliminates Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata from fantasy consideration, although Asiata is always a candidate to vulture a touchdown. Peterson won't get enough volume to be a strong option himself. Despite a favorable matchup with the Colts, it's a backfield to avoid.
Adrian Peterson says he'll play this week
Well this is a surprise as most did not expect Peterson to return until next week against the Packers. However, Matt Asiata missed practice today and is questionable which tends to make one think that he might not play this week thus pushing up the need for AP to get back in action. It's a definite hit to the value of Jerick McKinnon who was shaping up to be a viable value option (especially on PPR sites). That said, it's hard to imagine Peterson getting a full workload so McKinnon might still be in play. We'll continue to keep you updated on this situation heading into Sunday.
Jerick McKinnon practices again on Friday
It's likely that McKinnon will take the field for the Vikings this week when they face the Lions. It's a good but not great match up against a defense that allows over 100 yards a game on the ground but is more vulnerable to the pass. Add in Matt Asiata vulturing third down and red zone work and he's generally a fade for DFS purposes. Asiata's value takes a big hit as well.
Jerick McKinnon returns to practice
McKinnon has missed some time with an ankle injury but practiced today and is in line to return to action this week when the Vikings take on the Lions. It's a good match up against the poor run defense of the Lions but with Matt Asiata and Ronnie Hillman also vying for touches it's not a situation we can trust for DFS purposes. Add in the ineffective Vikings offensive line and it's one to avoid for all three.
Jerick McKinnon expects to play Sunday
The Vikings RB stated his ankle feels better and he expects to play this week when his team hosts the Lions. It's a good match up for the team as the Lions are 25th in RB Rush DVOA but it's a situation that's hard to trust as Matt Asiata vultures red zone and passing down snaps and Ronnie Hillman has been thrust into the mix of late. McKinnon might be worth a GPP flyer or two if you're mass multi-entering lineups but outside of that he can be avoided. His return makes Asiata/Hillman unusable for DFS purposes.
Jerick McKinnon officially ruled out for Monday
Updating a previous report. McKinnon has officially been scratched from the Vikings lineup. Matt Asiata will get the start and be a solid value option at running back; he should see a high volume of touches and be involved in both phases of the offense.
Jerick McKinnon not expected to play Monday
McKinnon (ankle) had been in a walking boot Thursday, and even though he didn't have it Friday, he didn't practice. He missed practice again Saturday, and beat writer Andrew Krammer doesn't expect him to play Monday night against the Bears. Matt Asiata will lead the backfield, and he'll be another value option at running back this week. Asiata has only gained 3.3 yards per carry on the season, and Chicago is allowing just 3.9 ypc. The Bears have a banged up secondary, so teams often attack through the air more often than on the ground. Fortunately, Minnesota uses Asiata as a receiver, he had six receptions last week against the Eagles (and his reception totals have risen each week since Week 3). Asiata should definitely see a high volume of touches, and he'll be the red zone/goal line back, but he may have trouble being efficient. Still, he's very cheap across the industry and will definitely go under the radar as most of the attention has (rightfully) been on Devontae Booker, who's in a similar price range.
Jerick McKinnon and Cordarelle Patterson miss practice
Both players appear unlikely to play for the Vikings on Monday Night football against the Bears. They have an extra day of practice, however, so tomorrow's practice report will be a better indicator. Matt Asiata would be a decent, but not great, option at RB if McKinnon sits. We'll update you tomorrow when we learn more on the VIkings injury situation.
Jerick McKinnon in protective boot
The Vikings RB was seen in a protective boot on his injured foot today putting into question whether he will play Monday Night against the Bears or not. If he is unable to go, Matt Asiata should get the bulk of the work and would be a viable value option at the RB position. McKinnon has an extra day to recover so we'll keep an eye on this situation and update you when more clarification is given.
Adrian Peterson to have surgery; expected to miss several weeks (or more)
The Vikings RB told Josina Anderson that he would be having surgery this Thursday to repair his torn meniscus. It means he'll certainly miss this weeks game against the Panthers and should miss several more afterwards with some possibility of an extended (even season long) absence. Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata will split the Vikings RB workload with McKinnon expected to get about 2/3 of the work and Asiata being the preferred red zone option. While both have some upside, it's a tough match up against the Panthers this week and one that should be avoided for the most part.
