Mathew Dumba Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Cam Ward is one of the worst goalies in the National Hockey League
Matt Dumba is priced silly on DraftKings ($6,300) where he is the fourth most expensive defenseman, but on FanDuel ($4,600) he checks in as an excellent source of salary relief. Last season's breakout blue liner tallied 50 points (14 goals, 36 assists) as he played in all 82 games. Dumba was particularly potent in the second half of the season, where he recorded 25 points in 33 games, matching his point total from the first half of the season in 16 fewer games. Dumba and Minnesota have yet to get going offensively, but they could not ask for a better matchup against a Chicago team leaking goals behind the shaky Cam Ward. Corey Crawford is a goalie who bails the Blackhawks out from time to time. Ward is a far cry from that. Take advantage of Dumba's price on FanDuel.
Minnesota defenseman could erupt against league-worst penalty kill
After such a promising 2016-17 season, the Edmonton Oilers have been an abomination defensively. Their penalty kill rate (74%) is the worst in the National Hockey League as they continue to have difficulties while short-handed. While power play time is shared relatively evenly for the Minnesota Wild, Mathew Dumba still emerges as a fantastic option at a reasonable price tag. Dumba has picked up an assist in four of his last five games while logging a healthy dosage of minutes. Furthermore, in the previous meeting between the Minnesota Wild and Edmonton Oilers this season, Dumba buried two goals. The late slate has a number of strong options on defense like Kris Letang, Aaron Ekblad and Keith Yandle, but Dumba is right there with them given the discount. Affordable option on the blueline takes on Blueshirts
There is merit to paying up for Brent Burns given his floor, but there are a number of affordable options on defense tonight. Matt Dumba is one of them, as he has points in consecutive games and draws an excellent matchup tonight at Madison Square Garden against the reeling Rangers. Last night, Dumba matched last season's career-high in points (34) as Dumba has now gathered 10 goals and 24 helpers in 60 games. Dumba is logging big minutes (22:58 TOI/G) from the blueline for Bruce Boudreau's squad. Across the industry Dumba checks in as a nice source of saving salary (FanDuel - $4,700, DraftKings - $4,800, FantasyDraft - $9,700). The Rangers have allowed the most goals per game (3.91) in February, and it is hard to see this thin group keeping Matt Dumba and company in check.
Three-Headed Wild Defense
As much as I like the Vegas Golden Knights offense tonight, I prefer the upside of the Minnesota Wild defensemen. The New York Rangers are a defensive mess right now (ranking 29th overall in CA/60, HDCA/60 and SCA/60), and they have given up on the season, which should allow the Wild to dominate this hockey game, putting all three of Ryan Suter, Jared Spurgeon and Mathew Dumba in a prime position. Suter sees an insane amount of minutes on a nightly basis (averaging just under 27 minutes of ice time per game), and he is the safest option for cash games. With that being said, Spurgeon has the higher ceiling, and with Dumba seeing a major increase in ice time and power play duties, he may be the best bang for your buck.
Could This Top Scoring Line Go Overlooked Tonight?
After struggling for much of the early part of this year, veteran Eric Staal has proven he has plenty of gas left in the tank; entering tonight's game with 12 points over his last 10 games. Skating alongside talented playmakers Nino Niederreiter and Tyler Ennis on Minnesota's top scoring line, Staal should get plenty of opportunities to continue his resurgence against a depleted Rangers defense that will be without their top defensemen in Ryan McDonagh tonight. He's not the sexiest pick in the world, and Minnesota rarely blows the opposition out of the water, but with New York's struggles on the road continuing through the start of the new year, Staal becomes a terrific all around play with his moderate price in a game the Wild should have no problems finding the back of the net.
No price budge in December despite five goals
Matt Dumba is riding a three game point streak which has seen him amass three goals and an assist on eight shots. With Jared Spurgeon out, Dumba has taken on a much bigger role for a Minnesota Wild team that is 6-3 in December. Moreover, Dumba has potted five goals this month as his torrid pace continues. With Roberto Luongo on the shelf, the Florida Panthers have struggled to keep opposing teams off the scoreboard. Dumba plays on the top power play and is extremely affordable across the industry.
