Matt Kuchar Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar are both no longer in the field

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar headline what has already been a busy list of names deciding to take a pass on this week's AT&T Pro-Am. Jonathan Byrd and Rickie Barnes have gained entry into the field and should be added to pricing pools on Tuesday. At this time there is no injury news associated with either Kuchar or Johnson's choice to not play this week. Johnson is coming off a big win last week and could have opted out after a long travel plan back to the states.

Matt Kuchar stands out as a great source of value for the week

Narratives are often stronger than actual facts. The current popular view on Matt Kuchar by many in the world of DFS golf is that he is a player on the downward trend of his career. Heading into an event that Kuchar plays extremely well there is very little interest in adding Kuchar ( under 4% POW) to roster builds for the week. In his last seven starts at The Masters Kuchar is 7 for 7 in cuts made with 5 top 25 or better finishes highlighted by 3 top ten or better performances. Despite his low price there does not seem to be many takers in the idea that course history matters in the case of Kuchar for the week. If you are looking to take a risk and add Kuchar to your roster pool then a top 30 or better finish is all you need in order to crush expectations. Kuchar has only finished outside of the top 30 three times in his previous 13 starts at the Masters.

A Great Value

He has a track record of success at the US Open dating back to 2012, making 7 of 8 cuts with finishes of 16, MC, 16, 46, 12, 12, 28, 27. He is used to these difficult tests and is the kind of guy that can hit fairways and get up and down for par when he needs to. I am willing to give him a pass on the short-term form in favor of his experience in majors and familiarity with challenging US Open tracks. He is one of the best bets to make the cut under 7500 and is someone I am willing to get into my lineups in all formats.

Matt Kuchar stands out as a strong low ownership option for the week

Still ranked inside the top 30 in the world, Matt Kuchar comes into this week as a golfer with little to no interest in terms of ownership. The low price tag on Kuchar for the week directly reflects his unassuming play since the tour restart in June. Since the Colonial in June, Kuchar has played in 8 events making 6 cuts with 2 top 25 or better finishes. Not horrible golf, but also not the upside that most are used to getting out of Kuchar. Trending at a low ownership number for the week Kuchar has the proven talent in big events to merit a spot in your roster builds. Kuchar will plot it around this week and if a few putts drop he could make noise towards the weekend. With three top 25 or better finishes in the last 5 U.S. Open’s Kuchar has gained almost 28 strokes tee to green in his last 22 rounds at The U.S. Open. Arguably the most accomplished player in this field yet to win a major, Kuchar would like nothing more than to finally add an elusive major win to his resume.

Multiple Monday WD's for the first event of the 2021 PGA Tour season

The PGA Tour season will start a new this week as the 2021 season will get underway on Thursday at The Safeway Open. Matt Kuchar added his name to the list of players who committed to the event to pull out on Monday. Joining Danny Lee, Jimmy Walker, and Bronson Burgoon, Kuchar will take a pass on this week's event. With only one week separating the first event of the 2021 season and The U.S. Open, there could be more player movement as the week progresses. Roberto Castro, George McNiel, Bill Haas, and Ryan Blaum have been added as replacements and should be in the pricing pool within the next 24 hours.

An Elite Option At This Course

Rare are the days where I prioritize Kuchar, but I have faith in him this week. You know Kuchar is seething on the inside after missing a paycheck last week only by virtue of a double bogey on his final hole on Friday. Kuchar is a “Team RBC” member who always tees it up at Harbour Town, and his results here are fantastic with six straight top 25 finishes and nine straight made cuts at this event. He brings a great blend of safety and upside to the table at this venue, as his 2014 title and 2019 runner-up finish would attest. The reasonable price tag is a nice bonus, as well. I think he is playable in all formats, but the GPP potential is better than normal given the course fit. He should be ready to roll on Thursday in an attempt to put last week’s disaster behind him.

No Fans Around to Yell "KOOOOOOOCH"

I have a handful of rules that I always follow in different sports. For basketball, I always roster Russell Westbrook whenever James Harden sits and vice versa. In golf, I always roster Kuchar on Pete Dye courses. It's a simple rule and it has worked wonders over the years. While he missed the cut last week at a course he usually plays well, he double-bogeyed his final hole to miss it on the number. We can easily forgive him for that. There really isn't a Dye course that Kuchar doesn't play well at -- Harbour Town, TPC Sawgrass, TPC River Highlands, etc. In his last six starts at this event, he has a win, a second, a T5, a T9, a T11, and a T23. It's safe to say he has elite course history. Even though Kuchar doesn't grade out as an elite play in my model, he's one of a handful of golfers where I throw out his projection on certain courses and this is one of them.

Better Form than you Might Think

Kuchar is a short-track specialist. He’s going to struggle on long courses where he has to compete with the likes of Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau averaging 320 yards off the tee. Throughout his career, he has routinely contended at these plodder courses where it’s more about precision than distance. It seemed like he was in bad form before the break, but he finished second at the Genesis Open and had top 25 finishes at the WGC-Mexico and the Waste Management Open. He should fly under the radar given his hefty price point, but our projections view him as a nice value this week. He’s made 10-of-11 cuts at this event in his career with three top 10 finishes.

Matt Kuchar continues to play well in Hawaii

Narratives often play a bigger role in our DFS process than most of us would like to admit. WIth some negative buzz around the idea that this was a week of vacation for The Kuchar family, the lack of interest in Matt Kuchar stood out as a strong discussion point prior to round one. Kuchar's opening round of 68 represented his 16th round of 70 or better in his last 24 rounds at The Plantation Course. Regardless of narratives, Kuchar's past results have shown that his game fits this venue. Heading into round two of this year's TOC Kuchar stands in third place in DraftKings points for the week with average ownership of less than 10%. Not surprisingly, Kuchar had even lower ownership in the round one showdown slates. At less than 5% ownership, Kuchar's round one DK score of 54.25 became a must if you wanted to take down a GPP. For those considering a round two fade of Kuchar in showdown slates, keep in mind that in seven career rounds at The Plantation course, Kuchar has a scoring average of 70 ( 3 under par).

Fifteen minutes to roster lock and no major news to report

It's finally time for the 2020 PGA Tour season. With just around fifteen minutes until lock, there is no major news to report. If you have not edited dummy lineups please remember to do so now. The weather could play a role this week, but with a limited field, there is not an edge to be gained by stacking a tee time wave. With strong winds expected over the next four days, you can give a slight bump to golfers who tend to play well in windy conditions. ResultDB will be up and running shortly after lock so please check back to see how your rosters stack up against the field. Good luck this week grinders!!!
