Getting Back To Business

The Indians have been nothing short of a hot mess express in 2020, headlined by Zach Plesac complaining about the audacity of people questioning him for breaking protocols when the team was in Chicago. With the irony of all that cast aside, I do like the Indians in this spot. Ivan Nova simply hasn't been a major league caliber pitcher for several seasons now, and the Indians should be able to rough him up. They also will have virtually no ownership given their struggles so far in 2020 combined with the fact that this is a loaded slate for offense. Santana is my primary power target, while the likes of Ramirez and Lindor are solid spend up options. You can even look to Freeman and Naquin for some punt value.

Carlos Santana (shoulder) scratched Friday; Mike Freeman replaces

Santana has been scratched from the Cleveland Indians original confirmed lineup and will not start in Friday’s matchup against the Kansas City Royals due to left shoulder soreness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Mike Freeman, who will now play first base and slot directly into Santana’s vacated third spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Indians lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Jakob Junis on the road this evening.

Javy Baez scratched on Monday

RHBs have just a .296 wOBA with four HRs (47.6 GB%, 30.4 Hard%) against Chad Kuhl in a difficult park for RH power in Pittsburgh. Replacing him with a below average LHB like Mike Freeman (-26 wRC+, .077 ISO vs RHP in 55 career PAs) is probably still a slight downgrade, considering LHBs .375 wOBA, 37.4 GB%, and 36.4 Hard% against Kuhl this season.

Mike Pelfrey owns a -3.3% K-BB% versus LHB through five starts this season

Mike Pelfrey has yet to have that signature blowup outing to begin his 2017 campaign but has consistently giving up runs and issuing free passes, evidenced by his inability to make it out the fifth inning in all but one start. Pelfrey strikes out hitters from both sides of the plate at a sub-10% rate, putting everyone in the Seattle Mariners lineup in play, though lefties are the preferred targets, as Pelfrey typically does an above-average job at keeping the ball on the ground (59.2% GB% in 2016) and limiting hard contact (26.3% HH%) to right-handed batters. However, last season against lefties, Pelfrey registered groundballs at a 45.3% rate with a 35.9% hard hit rate. Basically, Pelfrey cannot strike out left-handed batters and allows them to crush the baseball on a consistent basis. With Robinson Cano on the disabled list, Ben Gamel (168 wRC+, .410 wOBA, .191 ISO vs RHP) and Kyle Seager (140 wRC+, .372 wOBA, .216 ISO vs RHP since 2016) are the clear top targets in this Seattle lineup, while Nelson Cruz (159 wRC+, .397 wOBA, .258 ISO vs RHP) can always get ahold of one against any pitcher, let alone a starting pitcher of Pelfrey's caliber. Outside of that, hitters like Guillermo Heredia and Mike Freeman can be considered as salary-saving options to round out a Mariners stack in tournaments.

Kyle Seager (hip) scratched today; Mike Freeman will start at third base

Seager has officially been scratched from the Seattle Mariners for today's game against the Oakland Athletics due to a sore hip. Mike Freeman will replace him at third base and bat eighth. This lineup change slides Dan Vogelbach up to the five-hole vacated by Seager, while Guillermo Heredia moves up one spot to seventh. Other than making sure Seager isn't in your lineups, this news does very little to alter the fantasy landscape of the Sunday afternoon slate.
