Captain will fly under the radar despite strong matchup
Mikko Koivu never really screams upside. In fact, he has just a single multi-point game over the last two months. However, Captain Koivu is in a nice groove right now, potting a goal in each of his last three games. The premier plays from the Minnesota Wild, who are the heaviest favorite on Sunday, are Eric Staal and Mikael Granlund, but the prices of these two have come up due to their mammoth games recently. Koivu checks in at a reasonable, right-where-he-should-be price, but his value sees a nice boost against Jimmy Howard and a defensively challenged Detroit team. The upside really isn't there in tournaments especially given how loaded center is at the top today, but Koivu makes for a nice secondary option in cash games as he should at least find an assist while skating on the team's top power play unit. Additionally, it would not be surprising at all for him to be out there when Detroit has to pull the goalie. Minnesota should cruise here.
Cheap center takes on familiar foe
Mikko Koivu has points in four consecutive games. While he has not scored a goal in almost a month, Koivu has averaged four shots on goal during his point streak. Last time out, he battered Buffalo for seven shots on goal, and he should like his chances again today against a road-weary Avalanche team. Last season, Koivu thrived against the Avalanche as he collected three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in 4 games. With a red-hot Mikael Granlund on his line, Koivu seems certain to find the scoresheet. Adding to his value is the fact he centers the team's top power play unit which features Nino Niederreiter, Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Suter. Koivu makes for an excellent play in all formats.
Big boost to this player as opposing superstar is ruled out
The Minnesota Wild are in Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs tonight, who will be without their best player in Auston Matthews. This bodes well for the Wild, as not only is he a gifted offensive player, his defensive abilities are solid as well. The second line on Minnesota is in play tonight which is made up of Mikko Koivu, Mikael Granlund and Nino Niederreiter. I guess this line should probably considered the top line as the trio stick together and play on the top power play unit with Ryan Suter and Jared Spurgeon. They might end up facing the Kadri line a lot tonight, but they should still be able to get enough offensive opportunities as the Leafs struggle to keep the puck out of the net.
