Nicklas Backstrom Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
This center is back on the top line
Nicklas Backstrom was centering Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson by the end of last game and it seems like they'll be together again tonight. Washington has been great as of late as their 56.41 CF% ranks third over the last month and their 62.63 CF/60 ranks fifth. Tonight they host a Minnesota Wild team that is fighting for a playoff birth. This makes for a great line stack with Ovechkin and Backstrom as an intriguing two-man stack as they play on the top power play unit together with Wilson playing on the second unit.
Oshie Heating Up
The Florida Panthers have given up at least four goals in six of their last seven road games so not taking a look at the Washington Capitals could be a costly mistake this evening. Alexander Ovechkin is the household name as he should be so our eyes must wander over to the very affordable T.J. Oshie. Nicklas Backstrom is the center on the top line but it has been Oshie who has collected a team high 10 points over the last three weeks. Oshie has struggled up until now as he has only played in 43 games while being credited with just 31 points. Get him while he’s hot.
This line should dominate from puck drop
Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and T.J. Oshie will visit the Ottawa Senators tonight. Ottawa continues to be a team that we want to target against and they are playing their second game in as many nights. They currently are in last place in the league in CA/60 and GA/60. Special teams may play a big role tonight, as Ottawa’s weak penalty kill (74.5%), takes on the Capital’s seventh ranked power play (23.5%). Adding John Carlson to the stack is a nice addition, as he quarterbacks the team’s first power-play unit and correlates with all three forwards.
Great special teams matchup for this line
Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and T.J. Oshie will visit the Ottawa Senators tonight. Ottawa continues to be a team that we want to target against. They currently are in last place in the league in CA/60 and GA/60. Special teams may play a big role tonight, as Ottawa’s weak penalty kill (73.8%), takes on the Capital’s sixth best power play (25%). Adding John Carlson to the stack is a nice addition, as he quarterbacks the teams first power-play unit and correlates with all three forwards.
You have to keep going back to the well with this aging sniper.
I feel like a broken record any time the Washington Capitals are on a slate. When you have a player of Alex Ovechkin's goal-scoring ability on a slate — especially a short three-gamer — it's tough to fade. Over the last three weeks, Washington has a 54.47 CF% and a 62.02 CF/60, both rank sixth in the NHL. I use three weeks as that is roughly 10 games for NHL teams. Additionally, in that same time frame, the Buffalo Sabres have a 46.05 CF% (25th) and a 59.90 CA/60 (6th most). This is a premium matchup for the Washington Capitals who are 10-5-2 at home and 7-3-0 over their last 10 as they really start to heat up.
This wingers goal-scoring shows no signs of slowing down.
Even at 33 years old, Alex Ovechkin remains the best goal-scorer in the NHL. He leads the league with 29 goals — 4 more than the second-place Jeff Skinner. Tonight he'll be playing with Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie on the Capitals top line. The Washington Capitals are hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins who are expected to start Matt Murray in net. Murray has struggled this season with a 3.95 GAA and a .883 SV%. This line stack is an elite play as the trio all play on the top power play unit which gives them full-game correlation.
This elite goal-scorer cannot be slowed down.
At the age of 33, Alex Ovechkin has shown no signs of slowing down nor is there any signs of a Stanley Cup hangover even with all of his well-documented festivities over the summer. He leads the league with 25 goals — 3 more than Jeff Skinner and Patrik Laine. He's playing with Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie tonight as the Washington Capitals visit the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina is on the tail-end of a back to back and with Scott Darling expected to be in net, the Caps are in a great position to fill the net. Darling has struggled this season with a 3.14 GAA and .892 SV%.
Despite his age, this player has barely slowed down in the goal-scoring department.
Alex Ovechkin is 33 years old and has not really shown many signs of slowing down his elite goal-scoring ability. He's potted 22 goals in 29 games which is a 62-goal pace. Of course he won't get 60, but putting up another 50-goal season is in the realm of possibility. He's playing with Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie tonight as the Washington Capitals host the Detroit Red Wings — a team that is on a back-to-back. Using this entire line stack is an elite play as the trio play on the top power play unit together which gives them full-game correlation.
This Washington Capitals winger is shooting a lot less than we've become accustomed to.
His shot totals are down a bit as he is tied for 10th in the NHL with 87 total shots. The Capitals are taking on a NY Islanders team that has a 45.88 CF% which is the fourth-worst mark in the NHL and are giving up 59.97 CA/60 which is the sixth-worst mark. Given that the Capitals aren't much better in their possession numbers, this could be a game where teams go back-and-forth exchanging scoring chances. Ovechkin will be playing with Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson on the Capitals top line and while they're on the road, the matchup is a solid one and they should be able to get on the scoresheet multiple times.
Fade This Superstar At Your Own Peril
Reunited with playmaker Nicklas Backstrom on Washington's top line, superstar forward Alex Ovechkin has quietly enjoyed another fantastic offensive season; entering tonight's game with 14 points over his last 10 games. He'll have a fantastic opportunity to improve upon his recent success tonight against a weak Ottawa defense that has surrendered the most shot attempts and the most scoring chances among road teams on tonight's slate. A beast on one of the league's deadliest power plays, look for Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Carlson to come through on the man advantage tonight against an Ottawa penalty kill that ranks 29th in the league this season.
