Oscar Mercado Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Indians currently have the highest total on the slate vs. Skoglund
The Royals are calling 6’7 lefty Eric Skoglund up from AAA to make this start in Cleveland vs. the Indians. Over 63 innings (11 starts) in AAA, Skoglund had a 6.14 ERA, 6.49 xFIP, 1.71 HR/9, 9.3% K-BB, 1.52 WHIP and 42% FB rate. Over 88 career MLB innings, Skoglund has a 6.03 ERA and 5.13 xFIP. Skoglund has no problem with control as evidenced by his 6.1% BB rate in AAA this year and career 8% BB rate, but lacks swing and miss stuff (career 16.3% K rate, 7.2% SwStr) and his approach leads to him often getting hammered (career 90.2 MPH aEV, .353 xwOBA allowed). Though they just lost Jose Ramirez to the IL, the Indians suddenly have a dangerous lineup after acquiring Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes at the deadline and have some nice options tpday. Carlos Santana (.358 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Yasiel Puig (.341), Francisco Lindor (.338), Franmil Reyes (.321), Oscar Mercado (.315) and Jason Kipnis (.286) are all in play. Santana has been their hottest bat with a .419 xwOBA over the past 14 days. Franmil Reyes is a nice value batting 5th at just $3.8k, followed by Jason Kipnis at $3.9k. The Indians have a 6.14 implied total vs. Skoglund and the Royals.
Top GPP Stack
I like the Cleveland Indians as my favorite tournaments stack of the day. Danny Duffy has looked solid over his last two starts, but the Indians over the last month have been hitting very well, ranking 7th in ISO and 3rd in wOBA. The Indians have some patient hitters with low strikeout rates to left handed pitching. Duffy is giving up a 38% fly ball rate, 40% hard hit rate and its hot with winds blowing 10-15 MPH out to left which is bump to the bats.
Mike Montgomery has a .421 xwOBA and 49.5% 95+ mph EV
Mike Montgomery lasted 11 batters against these same Indians in his first start of the season after being traded last week. He may be in line for about four innings/60 pitches tonight and has some absolutely brutal numbers, including a 14.2 K%, 35 LD%, 91.8 Z-Contact%, .421 xwOBA, 91.5 mph aEV, 49.5% 95+ mph EV. Unfortunately, the Indians have just a 13.8 HR/FB and 88 wRC+ vs LHP, while transitioning to a power suppressing park tonight, but batters from either side of the plate are above a .350 wOBA and xwOBA against Montgomery over the last calendar year, while Kansas City is actually a positive overall run environment. Jordan Luplow (158 wRC+, .325 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) costs less than $3K on FanDuel tonight. His .362 xwOBA against southpaws over this span is 54 points less than his actual results, suggesting a good amount of regression, but still an All Star quality performance. Francisco Lindor (114 wRC+, .188 ISO), Oscar Mercado (115 wRC+, .192 ISO) and Carlos Santana (136 wRC+, .178 ISO) are all above average bats against batters from either side of the plate and should remain a positive value against bullpen arms after seeing Montgomery twice at the top of the order. The Indians are the number three offense on the board at 5.4 implied runs tonight.
Aaron Sanchez has allowed at least four runs in eight of nine starts
Aaron Sanchez has failed to allow at least four runs in just one of his last nine starts and that was against Baltimore where he still walked four and allowed a HR. His 5.0 K-BB%, 6.26 ERA, 8.00 DRA, 24 LD%, .360 xwOBA and 89.9 mph aEV (42.8% 95+ mph EV) are just some of the numbers that will entice daily fantasy players to load up their lineups with Cleveland bats despite a mere 95 wRC+ vs RHP. The Indians also have just a 14.5 K% and 37.9 Hard-Soft% over the last week though, both best in the majors. Batters from either side of the plate have hammered Sanchez over the last 12 months. Neither side drops below a .348 wOBA or xwOBA. Francisco Lindor (109 wRC+, .214 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Oscar Mercado (119 wRC+, .191 ISO) are both above a 150 wRC+ over the last week. Jason Kipnis (117 wRC+, .193 ISO) costs just $3.6K on DraftKings. Only one other team on the slate is more than one-tenth of a run above Cleveland’s 5.5 implied runs tonight.
Red-Hot Offense Takes on Struggling Pitcher
The Cleveland offense has finally sprung to life over the past two weeks, leading the majors in slugging percentage and wOBA over the past 14 days, and tonight they take on (weather permitting) a pitcher in Ryan Carpenter who simply has not shown the ability to get big-league hitters out. Over two partial seasons in the majors, Carpenter has allowed a .416 wOBA to lefties and a .414 wOBA to righties, while giving up 19 home runs in exactly 60 innings. Every Cleveland hitter that makes the lineup is in play here, but I’ll be targeting the top of the order – Francisco Lindor, Oscar Mercado, Carlos Santana, Jordan Luplow, and Jose Ramirez.
Good Hitting + Stolen Base Matchup
Cleveland enters Monday with a top three implied run total on the slate (6.3) but current ownership projections have their total ownership as just the eighth highest. It’s a favorable matchup for the Indians who will host Daniel Norris and a Tigers bullpen that owns a league high 5.09 xFIP. Norris isn’t *that* bad of a pitcher but certainly one to target as he’s struggled both to miss bats (18.1 K%) and generate soft-contact (13.5 Soft%) this season. Due to the large amounts of hard-contact Norris allows it’s no surprise that he’s struggled with the long ball at times as the owner of a 15% HR-to-flyball rate which can really hurt him when he’s struggling to induce ground balls.
Cleveland has a handful of capable hitters against left-handed pitching with Jordan Luplow leading the way in terms of power (.328 ISO) over the last two seasons, albeit a small sample. Aside from Luplow, Francisco Lindor (.398 wOBA), Carlos Santana (.380 wOBA), Roberto Perez (.390) and at timesJose Ramirez (.338 wOBA) have all shown strong hitting skills against southpaws over the last two seasons - and I would expect Oscar Mercado (.300) to make improvements. In addition to simply being a good hitting matchup for Cleveland, PlateIQ also rates this is a fairly strong stolen base matchup with seven players in Cleveland’s projected lineup with a stolen base rating above 70 - Jose Ramirez leads the way at 79.30.
Analysis coming soon.
Jake Junis has allowed multiple HRs in six of last 13 starts
Jakob Junis has allowed multiple HRs in six of his last 13 starts, which is perhaps the most glaring stat here upon viewing conditions that are expected to strongly boost overall offense and power in Kansas City tonight. Another glaring stat is that his 29.7 Hard-Soft% is worst on the board, as his 89.6 mph aEV has led to a .354 xwOBA that’s just two points removed from his actual mark. Despite 5.12 implied runs, the Tribe is barely inside the top third of the board tonight and could go over-looked in this spot due to offensive struggles this season (90 wRC+, 13.7 HR/FB vs RHP), but this is a strong spot for them in a park that is generally power suppressing, though shouldn’t be tonight. LHBs have hammered Junis to the tune of a .362 wOBA and 45.2 Hard% over the last 12 months. While only Francisco Lindor (109 wRC+, .217 ISO) and Carlos Santana (118 wRC+, .213 ISO) are above a .200 ISO over the last calendar year against RHP, Oscar Mercado (142 wRC+, .185 ISO), Jason Kipnis (121 wRC+, .196 ISO), Jose Ramirez (95 wRC+, .190 ISO) and Jake Bauers (93 wRC+, .172 ISO) have shown some pop as well.
Indians have a team 130 wRC+ over the last week
Glenn Sparkman has a 12.7 K% with the worst Z-O-Swing% on the board (46.9%). Along with this, he carries an average exit velocity of 91.3 mph. As such, his .364 xwOBA is behind only Clayton Richard today, among pitchers who have made more than one start. The Cleveland lineup is suddenly smoking (130 team wRC+ last seven days) and will probably be well represented tonight at 5.83 runs, but still should have some value with reasonable price tags in the middle of the order. Jason Kipnis (120 wRC+, .193 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Jose Ramirez (100 wRC+, .196 ISO) are two of the hotter bats in the lineup, both above a 160 wRC+ over the last week. More expensively, Francisco Lindor (112 wRC+, .226 ISO), Oscar Mercado (141 wRC+, .184 ISO) and Carlos Santana (115 wRC+, .204 ISO) are projected to appear in the top third of the order tonight. All will bat from the left side against Sparkman, who has allowed a .342 wOBA, .361 xwOBA, 43.1 Hard%, and 39 GB% against LHBs over the last calendar year.
Ryan Carpenter has allowed nine HRs in six starts and has the highest xwOBA (.393) on the board
Ryan Carpenter has allowed nine HRs and struck out just 19 over his six starts. He’s allowed a 90.5 mph aEV and 11.1% Barrels/BBE with a 48.1 Hard%, according to Statcast, that’s bottom 3% of the league. While a 7.89 ERA is not entirely confirmed by his estimators, a 5.27 SIERA is the lowest of them, still denoting a pitcher with significant problems, not even taking the quality of the contact into account. His 91.3 Z-Contact% is second worst on the board, while a .393 xwOBA does take that contact into account and is easily the worst mark on the board. The Tribe have not made a lot of noise with the bats this year, but are still one of nine teams above five implied runs in this top matchup. RHBs are above a .400 wOBA and xwOBA against Carpenter over the last calendar year. Francisco Lindor (151 wRC+, .262 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) is having his normal season. Carlos Santana (136 wRC+, .187 ISO) has rebounded. Jordan Luplow (146 wRC+, .347 ISO) and Oscar Mercado (88 wRC+, .219 ISO, 62.5 Hard%) are newer additions who have produced in smaller samples against southpaws and generally find themselves in the upper half of the lineup against them now. Roberto Perez (122 wRC+, .215 ISO) is an affordable catching option.
Indians offense has sneaky upside vs. German
By most metrics, Domingo German has been a very solid pitcher this year as he has a 3.66 ERA / 3.75 xFIP / 3.82 SIERA with a 19.8% K-BB. German does allow a good amount of loud contact though with an 88.7 aEV on the year. Over the past month, German has struggled with a .352 xwOBA allowed and an aEV of 90.1 MPH. He has a .394 xwOBACON on the year which goes to show that hitters can do some damage against him if they’re able to put the ball in play. Francisco Lindor (125 wRC+, .235 ISO vs. RHP over last calendar year), Carlos Santana (119 wRC+, .190 ISO), Oscar Mercado (105 wRC+, .145 ISO), Jose Ramirez (105 wRC+, .192 ISO), and Jason Kipnis (88 wRC+, .162 ISO) are all decent options that are in the top-5 of the Cleveland order tonight. Mercado, Kipnis and Ramirez are all available under $3.6k on Draftkings. Lindor has been on fire with an xwOBA of .476 over the past 10 days and will leadoff but is not cheap at $5.4k. Leonys Martin, Tyler Naquin and Jake Bauers are $3.2k or less at the bottom of the Indians’ order and are just dart-throw options as they have largely struggled so far in 2019. The Indians have a 4.40 implied line versus German and the Yankees tonight.
