P.K. Subban Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Offensive Blue Line Options

The Edmonton Oilers are not only playing poor defensive hockey, they have also struggled mightily while short-handed, ranking dead-last in the National Hockey League on the penalty kill, which opens the door for the Nashville Predators three-headed monster. With a very favorable matchup on deck, all three of the Nashville Predators power play quarterbacks (P.K. Subban, Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis) are in play across the board tonight, with Subban and Josi leading the way. Keep in mind that if you are stacking the Predators tonight, Subban rolls with the Predators number one line on the top power play unit, while Josi and Ellis skate with the second line on the second power play unit.

A polarizing figure in the NHL, this defenseman continues to prove his doubters wrong

You may not like P.K. Subban, but he has been dominant this season and continues to prove his doubters wrong. He is fifth among defenseman in points with 44 and leads them in goals with 15. His trade to Nashville looked like a steal at the time from anybody in the analytical world, with the old school hockey guys favouring Shea Weber. In just a year and a half, there is little that can be said to defend the Montreal Canadiens and their trade. Subban also averages 1 block per game and 2.55 shots per game, which gives him a high floor to go with his offensive upside. He plays on the top power play unit, a power play that converts on 22.2 percent of their opportunities, which is fifth best in the NHL. With the Predators taking on the Detroit Red Wings, they have a great special teams advantage as Detroit's penalty kill only succeeds 77.5 percent of the time which is the sixth worst in the NHL.

Some added motivation for this Nashville blue-liner

Looking for a little ride down "Narrative Street" this evening? There's no better spot than rolling with P.K. Subban in his return to Montreal. The former (perhaps still) fan favorite in Montreal has posted three goals and three assists in five games during the month of February and his 43 points sits third best among all NHL defensemen this season. Subban dished out an assist against the Canadiens when they squared off earlier this season and his success in Nashville shines a spot-light on Marc Bergevin's biggest and most public gaffe.

I wonder if Montreal regrets swapping defenseman studs with Nashville?

It is just the season season that PK Subban has been in Nashville and he is on pace to set a career high in both goals and points. On the other end, Shea Weber has struggled with injuries this season and had his lowest point total (not including the lockout-shortened season) since 2008. Needless to say, as much of the hockey world outside of a few loud old school voices, this trade is continuing to tilt more and more in Nashville's favour as time goes on. Subban and the Predators are in Toronto tonight to take on the Maple Leafs. The Leafs have been playing solid but they do still give up plenty of scoring chances. Freddie Andersen has been great this year, but he was hurt last game and although he is starting tonight he could be a bit dinged up still. Nashville has the third best power play in the NHL converting on 24 percent of their opportunities which is in an elite spot tonight as the Leafs have given up four power play goals over their last six games.

Pick-a-Pred

We have a double edged sword in Nashville tonight. On one side of the sword, we know the Panthers are a team to target with opposing defensemen as they allow a good volume of shot attempts at 5v5 and they have one of the worst penalty kills in the league. On the other, narrowing or figuring out which Predator defenseman to hone in on is not easy. The Predators use all of Roman Josi, P.K. Subban, Ryan Ellis, and even Mattias Ekholm liberally on the power play. Most recently, Josi and Ellis have been seeing a tick more time on the advantage. Florida allows the third, fifth, and most shot attempts, scoring chances, and high-danger shot attempts per hour shorthanded (respectively). All of Josi, Ellis, and Subban play a good two-way game. Josi comes with the highest floor of the group, but Ellis (his 5v5 partner) offers a nice blend of upside and cost savings. Subban is Subban and can make highlight reel plays any game. Depending on your salary needs, the Predators offer blueliners for all budgets and formats.

Top Blue Liner Across The Board

It is the same old story for the Winnipeg Jets as they continue to be one of the National Hockey Leagues most penalized teams, taking the fourth-most minor penalties so far this season. Additionally, the Jets penalty kill has been less than stellar, ranking 20th overall. This of course opens the door for the Nashville Predators power play, and their three-headed monster on defense. The Predators have the second-best power play in the league, and their offensive depth on defense is a big reason why. When debating between the three for your cash game lineup, I would roll with Roman Josi, followed by P.K. Subban and Mattias Ekholm. If you are stacking the Predators in GPPs, keep in mind that Subban is on the top power play unit, while Josi and Ekholm skate on the second unit.

Don't Overlook This Top Line At Home Tonight

After bursting on the scene with three consecutive 60+ point campaigns, talented playmaker Filip Forsberg will look to improve upon his tremendous success to begin his career at home tonight. With 17 points in his first 11 home games this season, Forsberg draws a sneaky good matchup against a weak Vancouver team that can be exposed on the road. Skating alongside playmakers Ryan Johansen and Viktor Arvidsson on Nashville's top line and top power play unit, Forsberg's outlook is further improved by the fact that Vancouver ranks 24th in penalty kill percentage on the road. This line could be a popular option in tournaments, but I still think they won't be as highly owned as he should be, making them a solid line to target tonight in a game that Nashville should have no problems scoring.

This defenseman is quietly having his best offensive season in the NHL

Likely due to playing in Nashville instead of Montreal, but P.K. Subban is quietly having his best offensive season of his career. He's on pace for his second 60 point season and on pace for 16 goals which would be a career high. He's got 11 points in 15 games this season, and shooting more more than he did last season. He's on pace for about 200 shots on goal, a mark he's only hit twice in his career. He's been playing on the top power play unit alongside Roman Josi, which certainly helps with his offensive totals. Tonight the Predators are likely taking on the backup goalie for the Penguins in Tristan Jarry. He looked good in his only other start this season, but the Penguins played last night and the Predators are rested, so he will have a tired squad in front of him in this difficult matchup.
