Goalie takes on team who has not scored in nearly 200 minutes
Curtis McElhinney has yet to be confirmed, but with Petr Mrazek starting last night and a somewhat soft opponent in Buffalo, it is likely McElhinney will get the nod. Jack Eichel is set to return for the Sabres tonight which will certainly help their offense, but the team has struggled mightily after their hot start to the season. The Sabres have a single regulation win in their last 14 games. Meanwhile, Carolina continues to produce strong results. A sizzling Sergei Bobrovsky stood in their way last night. Curtis (or Mrazek if he starts) make for an affordable option in the crease if looking for a likely win in cash games.
In tournaments, taking a chance on either Linus Ullmark or Carter Hutton makes sense as they should see a heavy number of shots. Though Carolina's offense has been much better with the addition of Nino Niederreiter, time and time again this season we have seen goalies put up massive numbers against Carolina. Buffalo's goalie is cheap, contrarian and could be a difference maker in tournaments.
Streaky Goalie Could Be Heating Up
I don't have the data to back this up, but Petr Mrazek seems to be one of the streakiest goalies in the NHL. When he gets hot, he'll repeatedly hold teams to two or less goals. When he's on a cold streak, he can easily allow 4+ a night. Mrazek is coming off a 23 save shutout against the Coyotes, so it looks like he might be getting in the zone. He's a -235 favorite, the largest of the night. So even if he lets in a few, he should be in line to pick up the win.
Cheap goalie eyes win in coin flip game
Petr Mrazek was sharp against the poor Los Angeles Kings on Sunday night, stopping 33 of 34 shots in his return to action after missing time. The Ducks have really picked up their play over the last two weeks, so Mrazek may have his hands full, but the Ducks could be without Rickard Rakell. Whether or not we know before warmups is unknown as those who cover the Anaheim Ducks never really share too much information. Mrazek is just $7,000 on DraftKings and $7,400 on FanDuel, and while he likely will not see many shots, playing on the road helps. Even with their recent offensive surge, the Ducks are averaging the second-fewest goals per game (2.40 GF/G) in the National Hockey League.
Top Goalie Tonight?
Petr Mrazek has looked very good in goal for the Philadelphia Flyers, posting a 3-0 record and a .947 SV%, which includes a 28-save shutout in his last start against the Montreal Canadiens. Like the Canadiens, the Carolina Hurricanes shoot a ton (averaging 34.2 shots per game, good for fifth overall in the National Hockey League ), but struggle to score (ranking 26th overall in goals per game), and things only seem to be getting worse for the Hurricanes. Carolina has now lost six consecutive games, producing just 1.5 goals per game during this stretch, and things are unlikely to turn around anytime soon. All of this of course puts Mrazek in a terrific spot tonight on home ice. The Flyers shiny new toy should not only come away with the win tonight, he should also make 30-plus saves in the process, which makes him a great option in both cash games and GPPs tonight on this Thursday evening.
Newly-acquired goalie eyes big debut on Broad Street
Petr Mrazek has not been particularly good this season (2.89 GAA, .910 SV%), but he should be amped up for a home start with his new team. Mrazek was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings as the Philadelphia Flyers have suffered injuries to their #1 and #2 netminders Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth. The Flyers are a step up in class from the Red Wings, and they have been quite good this month, having won seven of their last eight contests. Meanwhile, Columbus has struggled this month, posting just three wins in 10 games. A large reason for their struggle has been their special teams as the team sports the National Hockey League's worst power play conversion rate (13.4%) on the road as well the worst penalty kill (68.9%). Adding to Mrazek's value is the fact that although Columbus has struggled on the road, they are averaging the second-most shots on goal (34.7) per game overall. Mrazek is cheap across the industry and could be the difference maker in tournament lineups as he should see 30-plus shots.
