Phil Mickelson to have a new caddie on the bag this week

Via his twitter page today, Tim Mickelson announced that he will not be on his brother's bag this week as he takes some time off to rest his body. Andrew Getson ( Phil's swing coach) will take over the duties as Phil looks to continue a push to make it to this year's U.S. Open via a top 50 spot in the world. Coming off a somewhat disappointing third-place finish at last week's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Mickelson finds himself currently in the 53rd position in the OWGR. This former two time Genisis Open Champion comes into the week in good form and will look to build on a very solid course history at Rivera. While the switch of a caddie is a bit newsworthy, the real impact should be very little this week as Mickelson knows this course very well.

Phil Mickelson looks to rebound from a bad stretch of golf

Despite missing five of his last seven cuts, Phil Mickelson still has a great chance of making it to Tour Championship in a few weeks. Fueled by an early-season win Mickelson currently sits in the 32nd position in this year's race. News broke last week that Mickelson currently went on a six-day fast prior to The Open Championship to restart his body in an order to get his game back. Despite his poor play over the last two months, Mickelson should find some refuge in being back at The TPC Southwind. In his last six starts at TPC Southwind, Mickelson has six top 12 or better finishes highlighted by three top 3 or better showings. Currently projected at less than 5% ownership, Mickelson's great course history makes for a compelling case as a GPP flyer for the week. Despite his poor recent play a no-cut event is a perfect place to take a risk on someone like Mickelson.

Phil Mickelson in search of the career Grand Slam

Not much has been made of Phil Mickelson’s chance to win the elusive career Grand Slam. To be fair Mickelson has been in the spot a few times before, but has never been able to seal the deal. With six-second place finishes in the U.S. Open, Mickelson knows what it takes to have a chance to win this championship. Mickelson turns 49 on Sunday and will look to finally overcome the one major that has famously escaped his grasp. Playing on a course that he won on earlier this year there is very little doubt that Mickelson can compete at this venue. The biggest question in regards to his chance for success is whether or not Mickelson can avoid the big mistakes that have plagued him in the past. Currently trending towards a low ownership number, Mickelson could be the difference maker in a very strong 8k price range for the week.

Phil Mickelson is a horse for this course

It's been quite a year for future Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson. In addition to his big win in "The Match" vs Tiger Woods, Mickelson has returned to the winner circle twice since March of last year. Playing in his 16th Wells Fargo, Mickelson has his sights on adding this event to the long list of titles in his resume. Despite not having a win at this event, Lefty has quite an impressive record at the course. Mickelson is 14 for 14 in cuts made at Quail Hollow including 10 top ten or better finishes. With 8 of those top 10's coming inside the top five or better, Mickelson has been close to winning this event on several occasions.

Priced reasonably around the industry Mickelson has both the current form and course history we are looking for in all formats this week.

Phil Mickelson returns to The Arnold Palmer Invitational first first time in five years

With two wins in the last thirteen months, Phil Mickelson has reasserted himself as a player worthy of our attention. Playing in his first Arnold Palmer Invitational since the 2013 season, Mickelson is flying under the radar in terms of popularity for the week. Currently projected to garnish an ownership level lower than 6%, this former API champion could end up being a super strong leverage play for the week. In 14 career starts at this event Mickelson has 6 top 25 or better finishes with 4 of those 6 coming inside the top 5. The long absence from this event has definitely impacted the interest in Mickelson creating a great spot to buy low on a golfer who has both great current form and outstanding course history.

Phil Mickelson is a horse for this course

Phil Mickelson heads into the 2019 season with plenty of positive energy. Coming off a season which included an end to a multiple year win drought and a victorious win over Tiger in the showdown in Vegas, Mickelson has a ton of momentum to build on for this year. Even though he described himself as rusty prior to the Desert Classic, Mickelson narrowly missed out on a win to start the season and heads into this event with an amazing course history. This three-time champion of The WMPO has made 4 out of his last five cuts at this event including three consecutive top 16 or better finishes. At this point in time last season, many felt Mickelson was perhaps done in terms of being a consistent force on tour. Armed with a ton of confidence and a bit of extra motivation to prove people wrong, Mickelson has both the current form and course history to make your roster builds for the week.

Weather update for The Safeway Open

Kevin Roth's weather report for the first PGA Tour event of the new season is up in the main forum. For now, it looks like the moderate windy weather in the forecast should be in play for both tee time waves. Each of the first two days Roth calls for winds to increase as the day progresses with gust possibly reaching 20 mph. With no real advantage apparent in either wave, it looks like we can cross weather off our list in preparation for The Safeway Open.

DraftKings projections are live and Phil Mickelson ranks as a top play

Phil Mickelson heads into this week with a ton of incentive to continue his solid play. With his first win since the 2013 season, Mickelson currently sits in the tenth position in the Ryder Cup standings and would love nothing more than to qualify for the team on his own accord. With 12 top 25 finishes in 18 events this season, Mickelson is playing the type of golf worthy of our attention, and at $7,400 on DraftKings this former multiple major winner stands out as one of the better value plays for this week's WGC Invitational. Mickelson will tee it up in his 20th WGC Invitational this week and will look to improve on his 7 career top 25 or better finishes at Firestone C.C. In a non cut event we would ideally like to pick players who do more than just make a top 25 finish, and with his ability to make birdies with the best of them, Mickelson stands out as a great low-risk option in his price range. The combination of his solid play and the discount on price have Mickelson ranked as the overall top play in terms of PT/$/K in our DraftKings projections this week, and should be a great option in both cash games and GPP's for the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

Five minutes to roster lock and no major news to report

Five minutes until roster lock and no major news to report.Good luck this week grinders, as always if any late news breaks we will provide the updates needed.

Phil Mickelson is a horse for this course

With one win already this season, Phil Mickelson is in the midst of his best season on the PGA Tour since winning the British Open in 2013. Currently ranked inside the top five in the FedEx Cup standings, Mickelson has 10 top 25 or better finishes in his 14 starts this season. Always a fan favorite Mickelson heads into this week with perhaps one of the best course histories of anyone in the field. Mickelson is 41 under par in his last 20 rounds at TPC Southwind allowing for 4 top 10's in his last five starts. The combination of his excellent course history and the overall lack of big names in the field will make Mickelson an easy choice for a top end roster spend in all formats. Mickelson is no stranger to playing a week before a major and should have a little extra motivation to play well after missing the cut at The Players Championship.
