Phillip Ervin Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

No Strikeout Downside

Since the start of 2019, Brett Anderson has a 13.3% strikeout rate with a 52.6% groundball rate against right-handed hitters. He also has a 31.4% hard to soft contact ratio against right-handed hitters. Castellanos, Suarez, Davidson (small sample size), and Ervin have really good numbers against left-handed pitching. The Reds have a 4.5 implied team total, which is the fifth highest on the slate. I’m hoping they come in a little lower owned, and if you’re playing on DraftKings or Yahoo, I don’t mind throwing in Casali.

A lot Of Hard Contact In 2019

Jon Lester used to be one of my favorite pitchers, but now he’s one of my favorite pitchers to stack against. Because of the name, not a lot of people stack against him. On a slate we’re looking to be different with our hitters, I think the Reds are a team to look at. It’s uncertain what this lineup will look like today, but we could potentially get a cheap leadoff hitter. Lester had a .342 wOBA with a .183 ISO and a 38.8% hard-hit rate against right-handed hitters in 2019. Ervin, Suarez, Castellanos, and Farmer had ISO’s over .210 against right-handed pitching last season. Plus, we have a great ballpark for hitters in this game. You can even use this stack as a secondary stack with Ervin, Suarez, and Castellanos.

Josh VanMeter (illness) scratched Saturday; Phillip Ervin replaces

VanMeter has been scratched from the Cincinnati Reds original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the New York Mets due to an illness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Phillip Ervin, who will now play left field and slot directly into VanMeter’s vacated leadoff spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Reds lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Zack Wheeler at home this afternoon.

Nick Senzel scratched Wednesday; Phillip Ervin replaces

Senzel has been scratched from the Cincinnati Reds original confirmed lineup and will not start in Wednesday’s matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies due to a presently unspecified reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Phillip Ervin, who will now play right field and slot directly into Senzel’s vacated sixth spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Reds lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Aaron Nola at home this evening.

Pair of struggling pitchers in Cincy this afternoon may be worth stacking against

Jose Quintana had a 3.17 xFIP and 20.7% K-BB through April and looked to be returning to form as an ace rather than a 4ish ERA guy. He hasn’t pitched well since April though, and over the past 30 days has been ineffective with an ugly 6.39 ERA, 5.56 xFIP, 5.45 SIERA and 7% K-BB with a 39.5% hard contact rate. He also has a .339 xwOBA allowed over that time frame. Yasiel Puig (.369 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Nick Senzel (.366), Eugenio Suarez (.358), Joey Votto (.326) and Phillip Ervin (.418 xwOBA vs. LHP in 20 PA) are all intriguing options vs. Quintana. The Reds have a 4.91 implied total this afternoon.

Luis Castillo will be the opposing starter in this game, and he has a similar story to Quintana as he had started 2019 hot but has recently struggled. Over the past 30 days, Castillo has a 3.32 ERA but a 4.84 xFIP, 5.24 SIERA and an ugly 17.9% BB rate. He’s allowed a .329 xwOBA over that span, much worse than his .277 xwOBA allowed on the year. Anthony Rizzo (.411 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Kyle Schwarber (.367), Kris Bryant (.361), Willson Contreras (.353), Jason Heyward (.342), Javier Baez (.338) are all in play vs. Castillo. The Cubs have a 4.59 implied total and will likely be very contrarian especially given the more obvious stacks on the slate.

Good In A Small Sample Size

Since being called up, Phillip Ervin has been very solid against left-handed pitching. It's a smaller sample size, but when looking at a four-game slate, I'm willing to take a shot on a value bat with a small sample size. He has a .195 ISO with a .362 wOBA in 47 PAs against lefties this season. Lauer has been hit or miss this season, but he has a .359 wOBA with a 20.7% strikeout rate against right-handed hitters this season. He has a 40.4% hard-hit rate against righties this season as well.

Pitching well since the trade, but not always the most consistent

Cole Hamels has allowed two ERs (three runs total) in four starts for the Cubs. He's struck out nine twice (Pirates, Nationals), but a total of five in his other two starts (Pirates, Royals). One never can tell what he's going to do game to game, but he has walked just six without allowing a HR and even Wrigley has to be better than Texas. RHBs do have a .330 wOBA against him this season and that's not all Texas either as their xwOBA against him is actually 20 points higher. Hamels is a viable pitching candidate on a four game slate, but may end up oversold. There are some flaws here. His 88.5 mph aEV is second highest on the board, his strikeout rate is only 23% and he's the most expensive pitcher on the board by a wide margin on either site. Since Hamels can occasionally blow up with the best of them, there is some merit in considering at least Eugenio Suarez (180 wRC+, .295 ISO) vs LHP last calendar year) and perhaps Jose Peraza (107 wRC+, .125 ISO) and Phillip Ervin (156 wRC+, .216 ISO) as well. Hamels is also a top stolen base target as noted by our Stolen Base Threat Ratings (premium subscription required).

Top ISO in the lineup benefits from pitcher with a reverse split

Clay Buchholz has had an impressive run for the Diamondbacks, but not as impressive as his 2.68 ERA suggests (84.9 LOB%). His heavy curveball and changeup usage (35%) results in a platoon split (RHBs .351 wOBA, 43.2 Hard%, 32.6 GB% since last season, LHBs .286 wOBA). He's visiting a park that accentuates power from either side of the plate. Eugenio Suarez (124 wRC+, .228 ISO) is a RHB who is actually the only batter in the lineup above a .200 ISO vs RHP over the last calendar year. This is the bat you want in this lineup. Joey Votto (157 wRC+, .172 ISO) can hit anyone, provided he's healthy. Other RHBs in this lineup include only Jose Peraza (87 wRC+, .102 ISO) and Phillip Ervin (94 wRC+, .156 ISO). The former bats in the leadoff spot for less than $4K on DK. Both are $2.5K or less on FanDuel.
