Rio Ruiz Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Intriguing GPP Stack

The top five teams in ISO so far this season are the Padres, Yankees, Tigers, Angels, and Orioles. How many people had that on their list at the beginning of the season? The Tigers and Orioles have been massive surprises. Baltimore is an intriguing contrarian offense on this slate. Assuming the weather cooperates, I will be significantly overweight with Baltimore stacks. Their primary hitters are very affordable, and Jake Arrieta is a shell of his former self. His strikeouts have been trending down for years, and all his numbers have been on the steady decline. Stacking the O's also allows you the flexibility to spend up for other spots in your lineup. Ruiz and Nunez give you the most power upside of the bunch.

Rio Ruiz (undisclosed) scratched Sunday; Patrick Valaika replaces

Ruiz has been scratched from the Baltimore Orioles original confirmed lineup and will not start in Sunday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays due to a presently unknown reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Patrick Valaika, who will now play third base and slot into the seventh spot in the order, which bumps Chance Sisco up two spots to fifth and Pedro Severino up to fourth, respectively. However, the remainder of the Orioles lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Yonny Chirinos at home this afternoon.

Some value bats available in Baltimore lineup tonight

Baltimore has a decent matchup with Mike Leake in Seattle tonight and their lineup has some bats with deflated pricing on Draftkings. Leake hasn’t been anything special this year with a 4.14 ERA , 4.68 xFIP and 4.58 SIERA with a 13.3% K-BB, 40.7% hard contact rate, 37.3% FB rate and just an 8% SwStr. His Statcast numbers show more vulnerability as he has allowed a .349 xwOBA, 10.3% barrel rate and an ugly 91.4 MPH aEV so far on the year. Baltimore is one of the league’s worst offenses, but given their pricing and the matchup, they can certainly have some use in lineups tonight. Chance Sisco (.339 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Dwight Smith Jr. (.326), Renato Nunez (.311), Jonathan Villar (.309), Rio Ruiz (.301), Chris Davis (.298) and Anthony Santander (.296) are all potential options. With the exception of Dwight Smith Jr., all these guys are available for $3.8k or less on Draftkings. Villar projects to leadoff at just $3.8k and is always a threat for a steal or two. Rio Ruiz stands out as the best value at a price of just $2.5k. Sisco ($3.3k) and Santander ($3.3k) project to hit in the top half of the lineup and are intriguing plays as well.

Upside and Value

The Blue Jays and Orioles are not good baseball teams and have been hit or miss offensively all year long, but we could see a shootout when the two teams face off tonight. After all, the game has a Vegas total of 10 1/2 runs! The Orioles get to take their hacks against journeyman Edwin Jackson, who is pitching for his 59th major league team in his 46th season. While I'm being facetious there, it's not TOO far from the truth. Jackson has no business in a major league rotation right now, with an ERA of 11.90 over his five starts with the Blue Jays. He's fooling nobody at this point in his career. The middle of the order bats like Mancini and Nunez are a fine place to start, and I like Rio Ruiz as a potential value play here. If you are playing on DraftKings, give Chance Sisco a look at an abysmal catcher position, especially if he lands in the middle of the lineup. Baltimore is a great GPP stack in this spot.

Orioles offense has plenty of upside vs. bad starter in Coors

Once a promising prospect, Jeff Hoffman hasn’t really put together a good season at any level since 2016. In 35.2 innings in AAA this year Hoffman had a 7.20 ERA / 5.36 xFIP with a 2.02 HR/9 and a 10.2% walk rate. Most projection systems have Hoffman at a 5+ ERA at the MLB level for 2019. The Orioles have a healthy 5.27 implied total currently vs. Hoffman, but maybe that’s too low given the matchup and environment. Dwight Smith Jr. (.343 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Trey Mancini (.337), Pedro Severino (.331), Chris Davis (.322), Rio Ruiz (.317), Jonathan Villar (.310) and Stevie Wilkerson (.309) are all in the O’s projected lineup and have been decent bats vs. RHP this year. Rio Ruiz (.364 xwOBA over the past 10 days) and Trey Mancini (.360) have been the Orioles’ hottest hitters of late, while Chris Davis (.144) has seemingly fallen into another cold streak. Rio Ruiz is just $3.8k and is easily the best value in the lineup. Villar and Wilkerson project to bat 1-2 in the order and are both under $4.8k. Davis and Severino are all available under $4k tonight.

Trevor Cahill has been getting rocked (nine HRs last 81 batters)

Trevor Cahill has seen his strikeout rate collapse with no more than two in three of his last four starts, in which he’s allowed nine HRs and walked 10 of 81 batters. He’s now sporting a board high 48.2 Z-O-Swing% for the season. His velocity is down a mile per hour from last season and trending downward even further with nearly each start. Also worst on the board are his 13.8% Barrels/BBE for the season and .437 xwOBA over the last month. It’s not often that you’ll see Baltimore bats recommended here, but it’s also not often you’ll see them on the top third of the board (4.74 implied runs) on a full slate. LHBs now have a .376 xwOBA with a 42.9 Hard% against Cahill over the last calendar year. In Dwight Smith Jr. (124 wRC+, .215 ISO) the Orioles actually have an above average bat against RHP over the last 12 months. He and Trey Mancini (113 wRC+, .216 ISO) are the only ones who can claim a wRC+ above 100 and ISO above .200 in this projected lineup over that span. Jonathan Villar (107 wRC+, .143 ISO) is probably worth a flyer as well, as Cahill is certainly a pitcher who can be run on as well. Because it’s the Orioles, there are two small potential drawbacks as well. First, Rio Riuz (116 wRC+) is the only batter on the roster with at least 10 PAs over the last week, who is above an 80 wRC+ over that span. Lastly, Cahill has not exceeded a 21.4 GB% in three of his seven starts, but has been at or above 50% in each of his other four starts. However, he’s still allowed six HRs over his last three starts with at least 50% ground balls.

Double-Digit Strikeout Potential In The Bronx

If you assumed Andrew Cashner was the subject of this note, you are sadly mistaken. Masahiro Tanaka will start Opening Day against the Orioles, who are trotting out a glorified Triple-A caliber roster. Let’s take a look at Baltimore’s 3-7 hitters: Jonathan Villar (.117 ISO, .311 wOBA, 25.8% K-rate vs. RHP in 2018), Trey Mancini (.188 ISO, .319 wOBA, 25.8% K-rate), Rio Ruiz (.000 ISO, .198 wOBA, 33.3% K-rate in 15 AB), Joey Rickard (.143 ISO, .295 wOBA, 20.8% K-rate) and the all-mighty Chris Davis (.124 ISO, .253 wOBA, 36.7% K-rate). Jesus Sucre and rookie Richie Martin round out the bottom two spots in the order. Although New York’s stellar bullpen will not require Aaron Boone to push Tanaka this season, he has double-digit strikeout potential in this one, even if he’s limited to five or six innings on the hill. Last season, he struck out 25.0% of his opponents and had an elite 5.5% walk rate. His “stuff” was sensational, as evidenced by the fact that opposing hitters swung at 36.3% of his pitches outside of the zone. We will want to pick on this Orioles lineup all season long and Opening Day is certainly no exception, even in the hitter-friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. Since the Bombers are massive favorites, Tanaka should fully be expected to not only dominate, but also earn a win in this contest, boosting his DFS outlook. He won’t come cheap, but he has similar scoring potential to higher-priced aces like Max Scherzer, Jacob DeGrom, Justin Verlander and company.
