Rod Smith Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Raiders Sign RB Rod Smith to the Active Roster

The Raiders have signed RB Rod Smith to their active roster. While Smith is unlikely to be a significant factor in the offense, this could be a sign that Josh Jacobs is not expected back this week.

30 Touches a Game for Zeke?

The Cowboys have decided to only keep 2 Rbs on their 53-man roster - Ezekiel Elliott and Rod Smith. We know that Zeke is the offense in Dallas and they get the ball in his hands whenever and however they can. He finished 2nd in the league in touches/game last season averaging 26.8, only behind Le'Veon Bell's 27.1. Considering the receiving options Dallas has going into the season, I don't think it's a stretch to see Zeke's touches go up even more.. 30 a game? It's not out of the question, especially if Rod Smith isn't making the most of his opportunities. Smith only averaged 4.9 touches/game last season, and I think that's about what we can expect in 2018, also.

Rod Smith (back, illness) and Cole Beasley (illness) inactive Sunday

Smith is inactive and won't suit up for today's game against the Philadelphia Eagles after previously being listed as questionable on the Dallas Cowboys' injury report with a back injury and illness, while Cole Beasley is officially inactive, as expected, due to illness. Despite nothing to theoretically play for, the Cowboys are expected to play their other regular starters this afternoon, including Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott, making them extremely interesting tournament targets with the Eagles resting six starters on defense and likely to pull others after a few series. Normally, this would be a tough matchup against the Eagles second-ranked defense in overall DVOA but the matchup becomes much easier than the on-paper stats suggest for this Cowboys offense and Elliott, who could be in-line for more passing-down work with Smith sidelined.

Low Ownership + A Sneaky-Good Workload = DFS Tourney Goodness

In Week 10, Rod Smith out-snapped Alfred Morris 38 to 22, as the Cowboys installed him more heavily into the game plan as they fell behind. The Cowboys' Week 11 opponent, the Eagles, rank second in the NFL in points per game, and have faced the fewest rushing attempts in the NFL (their 133 running back rush attempts faced through nine games - an average of 14.78 attempts per game - is almost unthinkably small). Meanwhile, the Eagles have faced the most pass attempts and the fourth-most running back targets in the NFL. This is a great, sneaky week to test the waters with Rod Smith in tourneys - knowing you'll get low ownership, and should also get plenty of snaps with a solid shot at six to eight targets and a handful of carries.

Ezekiel Elliott is withdrawing appeal, will serve full six-game suspension

This ridiculous saga has finally come to a close. Elliott has given up his battle and will remain sidelined for five more games. While he's out, the Cowboys will likely continue to roll with Alfred Morris in the early-down role with Rod Smith coming on for passing situations. Game flow turned against Morris last week and he only ended up carrying the rock 11 times, although he picked up a solid 53 yards on those attempts. Smith ended up attracting six targets but only turned them into 15 yards on four catches. Week 11 presents a terrible spot for Morris as the Eagles are first in adjusted line yards (2.33, per FO) and they're limiting RBs to the third-fewest touchdowns per game (0.33). They are, however, giving up the second-most receptions (6.44/g) and receiving scores (0.44/g) to the position though. Smith out-snapped Morris 38-22 last week (McFadden played one) and with the explosive Eagles - who've scored the second-most points this season (283) - coming to town, the game could head in a similar direction. At $3.4k on DK, Smith is an intriguing GPP option that should come with very low ownership. As Ian Rapoport reported last week, the Cowboys see Smith as their "wildcard" and they want to use him.

Alfred Morris expected to start for Cowboys Week 9

A source informed reporter Jen Slater that Morris will get the nod this Sunday. Dallas is still expected to employ a committee with Darren McFadden and Rod Smith in their first game without Ezekiel Elliott this season. It will be McFadden's first game of the season and he could be eased in. Cowboys beat writer Mike Fisher reported that Smith could be ahead of him this week but it looks like McFadden could end up leading the group in touches by the end of the six-week period. It's not a great situation to target in fantasy this weekend despite a favorable matchup with the Chiefs, currently ranking 31st in rush DVOA. On top of the workload split, Dallas could see a decline in their ground game without Elliott, forcing them to the air more often than normal. Fortunately for receiver Dez Bryant, the Chiefs are 20th in pass DVOA and they're giving up the second-most PPR points per game to receivers. Bryant hasn’t hit 100 receiving yards all season and he’s only topped 63 once but he should have a great spot this weekend to turn things around. He's only run 26% of his routes where CB Marcus Peters lines up and the Cowboys may make a point to avoid the matchup. That likely leaves him with Kenneth Acker, who replaced Terrance Mitchell, for most of the game. Acker wasn't great in his first start of the season, he allowed a 5/69/0 line on seven targets, coming in at 11th on the week in yards per cover snap (1.68). Whether it's Mitchell or Acker, Bryant should have the advantage on Sunday and may have a volume boost headed his way - and he's already averaging 9.1 targets per game.

Ezekiel Elliott's request for emergency injunction was denied, he'll be suspended six games

Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris are expected to take over the majority of the running back duties, although it isn't clear which one has the edge yet. Jerry Jones said Rod Smith will have a role as well. Hopefully, we'll learn more about what the Cowboys plan to do with their backfield as the week progresses. In the story that never ends, there is still an outside chance the NFLPA's appeal of this decision will allow him to stay on the football field, we're expecting a decision on that tomorrow evening.
