CAR RB Rodney Smith promoted to active roster from practice squad for Sunday
Rodney Smith has been promoted to the active roster from the practice squad ahead of Carolina's matchup Sunday with the Philadelphia Eagles. This move was expected after Christian McCaffrey was listed as doubtful yesterday. With McCaffrey out Chuba Hubbard (33 snaps last week, 13 carries, 2 targets) should lead the backfield with Smith (26 snaps, no carries, 5 targets) and Royce Freeman (12 snaps, 3 carries, no targets) providing support. Originally it was expected that Hubbard would serve as the fill in for McCaffrey in his 3 down role but Smith actually handled almost all the passing down work and we expect this to be the case again on Sunday. Hubbard should be viewed as a value play with limited upside due to his lack of presence in the passing game, while Smith and Freeman shouldn't be considered for DFS purposes.
Wednesday Week 17 NFL Roundup: Patrick Mahomes, Dalvin Cook, Ben Roethlisberger all to sit on Sunday; Panthers won't have Mike Davis, Jags to be without James Robinson
Week 17 is always a little weird, and we're starting to get a clearer picture as to what regulars will be resting in the regular-season finale. The Chiefs won't push Patrick Mahomes, instead turning to Chad Henne to lead the offense in a meaningless Week 17 game. It's very likely that Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Le'Veon Bell and Sammy Watkins could also be eased up on or just flat out inactive, so you're playing with fire by rostering any Chiefs in a game without consequence to them. The Vikings won't have Dalvin Cook on Sunday due to a personal matter, leading to Alexander Mattison likely leading the backfield and setting up as one of the stronger values at the RB spot. Speaking of RB values, Mike Davis won't play on Sunday for Carolina, leading to a much bigger workload for Rodney Smith. The Jags will be without James Robinson for a second straight week, giving Dare Ogunbowale another shot to lead the backfield after he turned in a solid yet uninspring effort in a blowout loss to Chicago. The Steelers are looking towards the playoffs and will therefore give Ben Roethlisberger a week of rest and let Mason Rudolph run the offense.
Christian McCaffrey inactive, as expected
Christian McCaffrey is inactive Sunday, as expected given his doubtful injury designation. Mike Davis will once again work as the top back for the Panthers, while Rodney Smith will work as the second back. Smith has seen his role expand recently, which takes some of the value away from Davis.
