Scott Piercy Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Five minutes until roster lock at The Sony Open and there is no news to report

With just about five minutes to the first full-field event of the 2022 calendar season and there is no major news to report. Scott Piercy was the last player to withdraw after pricing was released, so please make sure he is not in any of your builds. Good luck this week. ResutlsDB will be up and running a few minutes after lock.

Scott Piercy looks to bounce back from a rough start to the 2020 season

Scott Piercy has not exactly gotten off a great start to the 2020 PGA Tour season. Outside of a top 20 finish at The Greenbrier, Piercy has finished near the bottom of the field in three out of his four made cuts. Priced-down due to his poor recent form Piercy will look to get his season back on track at a venue that he has played well in the past. In his last three starts at this event, Piercy has three top 20 finishes including a pair of top 6 or better showings. Piercy has gained 27 shots tee to green in his last three starts at El Camaleon. Currently projected at a very low ownership number for the week Piercy could end up being a great GPP leverage play.

Scott Piercy looks to build on a great course history

The home game narrative will be something used a lot this week. Scott Piercy is one of the longer-tenured Vegas residents in this week's field and has plenty of experience playing at TPC Summerlin. Not only does he play and practice at this venue, but Piercy's swing coach Jeff Smith is also one of the teaching professionals at TPC Summerlin. Smith has a handful of players in this week's field including Aaron Wise and Cameron Champ. In his last five starts at this event, Piercy is 51 under par and has gained almost 30 shots tee to green. With plenty of fresh new faces on Tour, players like Piercy get a noticable price discount for the week. You could argue that his price is off anywhere between $500 and $1000 for the week. The combination of that discount and his strong form makes Piercy a great place to look for mid-priced value this week.

Great Statistical Fit for Sedgefield

It is a bit odd that we have only seen Piercy once over the last six weeks, but he did parlay that start into a top 15 finish at the 3M Open. He has also played well at Sedgefield in the past, rolling four straight made cuts with finishes of 8th, 12th, 63rd, and 45th on his Wyndham resume. He also grades out surprisingly well statistically for this course, and he rises to the level of being one of my favorite point per dollar GPP options. From his elite par four scoring (ranks 5th), to solid accuracy (30th), and ball striking ability, there isn’t a major weakness other than his occasionally wobbly short game. Piercy is capable of scoring with the best of them if this turns into a shootout, as well. Give him a look as a sneaky upside target.

Scott Piercy looks to keep up his strong play ahead of the year's second major

The early release of pricing for a major championship usually creates a few obvious spots to attack. Fresh off a bogey-free tournament and a second place finish at last week's Byron Nelson Scott Piercy should end up being one of the higher owned value options this week. In addition to his runner up finish at The Nelson, Piercy posted a third-place finish at The RBC and a 13th place finish at the two-man event in New Orleans. Priced down due to both the talent in this field and a less than desirable record in major championships, a red hot Piercy stands out as the top play in our model for The PGA Championship.

Good Form and a Good Pivot

Everyone is going to play Michael Thompson at this price point. He has four straight top 15 finishes on tour and he has won this event in the past. When looking to play or fade chalk, I like to ask two simple questions — 1) is the golfer overpriced compared to his talent level? 2) is the golfer volatile? I would argue that Thompson is significantly overpriced and if you look at his last 13 events on tour, he has missed five cuts. I will gladly pivot to Piercy, who comes into the event in similar form and who, in my humble opinion, is a better golfer. Piercy has four top ten finishes in his last eight events on tour and he played well here last year, finishing in a tie for 17th. His preferred putting surface is Bermuda and he should be significantly lower owned than Thompson.

Social Media Narrative

Narratives are often overblown in DFS. When a golfer Tweets that they are feeling good before a tournament, it will bump their ownership up across the industry. While we should be careful with narratives, it’s hard to overlook Piercy this week. He often does Q&A’s on Twitter and he goes out of his way to answer questions about his favorite course and his favorite tournament. He always answers with the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club. He has an excellent track record here and he comes into the week in great form, posting four straight top 20 finishes. He’s one of the worst putters on tour, but it’s worth noting that he loses fewer strokes per round on Bermuda than on any other grass type.

Course History - Exhibit A

If you are a course history buff, this pick is for you. He’s a Vegas native and his results at this course show that he loves golfing at home. He has played here every year since 2009, making eight of nine cuts along the way. Six of those eight made cuts have resulted in top 25 finishes, and he is about as steady as they come around these parts. By the way, he also happens to be coming off a solid fifth place finish at the CJ Cup a few weeks ago, too. When form meets course history for a hometown golfer, I’ll gladly buy in.

Strike While The Irons are Hot

It wasn’t love at first sight for Piercy and Colonial but he’s 4-for-4 over his last four Colonial starts including a T7 last year. He’s signed for red numbers in 10 of those 16 rounds. With approach play being vital here at this second-shot course, Piercy pops off the page again. He’s gained strokes approaching-the-green in 13 of his last 14 ShotLink events. It’s an easy decision to keep throwing some shares his way until his irons cool off.

PGA rosters lock in 10 minutes, and no major news to report

The first round of The 2018 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship is set to start in less than 10 minutes. As of now, we have no additional news in terms of injuries or withdrawals. Good luck this week grinders, as always if any late news breaks we will provide the updates needed.
