Sean Rodriguez Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Arrrrrrrrr-ing for Some Value

Clayton Richard has held LHBs in check for the better part of multiple seasons now, but he struggles against right-handed hitters, who have made hard contact against him 47% of the time this season. His ground ball rate also drops by 10% against righties. You can instantly cross off any Pirates LHBs here, but the RHBs are in play. Starling Marte has been placed on the disabled list, so he is also out. However, this might give us a shot at some value, especially if the likes of Jose Osuna and Sean Rodriguez draw good lineup spots. It’s a small sample size, but both have massive wOBA numbers against lefties so far this season. I like them as individual value plays in cash games.

Lots of value in the Pittsburgh lineup against Eric Lauer (RHBs .483 wOBA, 51 Hard%)

The Pittsburgh lineup has just a 4.30 implied run line, but RHBs have massacred Eric Lauer through four starts (.483 wOBA, .429 xwOBA, 51 Hard%, 29.2 GB%). There could be some massive value in Pirate bats, though players should realize that Lauer has been out of the game prior to the fourth inning in two of his four starts and the Padres have a quality pen behind him. The damage may be done by that point though. Max Moroff (98 wRC+, .175 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) costs the minimum out of the leadoff spot on FanDuel. Francisco Cervelli (123 wRC+, .200 ISO) bats third for less than $4K. Sean Rodriguez (138 wRC+, .243 ISO) costs less than $3K. The park in Pittsburgh suppresses right-handed power, but not hits and offense overall.

Derek Holland has benefited from a .242 BABIP this year, despite a 43.1% HH%

Holland has yet to have a true blowup outing thus far in the 2018 campaign, but he has consistently been surrendering offensive production to opposing lineups, allowing fewer than three earned runs in just one of his first seven starts. Holland is no longer doing a solid job of limiting hard contact as he's allowed at least a 41.2% hard-hit percentage in each of his last five starts, and after surrendering a hard-hit ball 52.9% of the time in his previous start, his hard-hit percentage on the season is all the way up to a 3whopping 43.1%, a number that could become a recipe for disaster if he continues to all fly balls at a 49.0% clip. From a matchup perspective, the Pittsburgh Pirates are rolling out a lineup with just one left-handed hitter for Sunday's contest in an effort to take advantage of Holland's abysmal splits against right-handed hitters, evidenced by a 17.5% strikeout rate, 12.5% walk rate, 43.2% fly ball rate, and a massive 40.8% hard-hit percentage last season. All in all, those metrics led to a whopping .408 wOBA, 5.97 xFIP, and 2.26 HR/9 versus righties in 2017, essentially, nothing out of the ordinary for Holland over the last few years. Obviously, with an almost full lineup of righties, there aren't many soft spots iwn the order for Holland to bail himself out of trouble, elevating the Pirates to one of the top stacking candidates on Sunday's main slate, and makes Josh Bell (0.211 ISO, 0.373 xwOBA vs LHP in 2017/18), Sean Rodriguez (53.1% HH%, 0.258 ISO, 0.480 xwOBA vs LHP in 2017/18), and Jose Osuna (0.212 ISO vs LHP in 2017/18) all fantastic options for daily fantasy formats this afternoon, while Francisco Cervelli (0.171 ISO vs LHP in 2017/18) is also an intriguing option at the catcher position batting leadoff for a highly projected offense.

Only two pitchers on tonight's slate have averaged more innings per start than Tanner Roark last two years

Tanner Roark just seems to find himself a part of boards where many of the other pitchers in his price range or above have some issues and today is no different. He's not exciting, but only Greinke and Samardzija have averaged more innings per start over the last two calendar years. His 9.5 SwStr% is a bit misleading, as he's only exceeded that in one start this year, but he'll generally miss enough bats to be useful in six plus innings and he faces a Pittsburgh lineup with Sean Rodriguez (21 wRC+ vs RHP) batting third. In fact, PlateIQ generates just a .310 wOBA and .160 ISO for this confirmed lineup against RHP since last season. Unfortunately, that comes with just a 19.4 K% too, but what you might be looking for in Roark is a high floor that's difficult to find tonight rather than immense upside. Gregory Polanco is really the most dangerous hitter in this lineup. He spent most of last year struggling with injuries, but has a .342 wOBA (.518 Contact xwOBA) with a .290 ISO vs RHP this season. Left-handed batters do have both a wOBA and xwOBA around .350 against Roark since last season, while he's held right-handed batters below .300 with a 24.8 Hard% (53.4 GB%).

Two pitchers with extreme platoon splits (Kyle Feeland, Chad Kuhl) face off in early game in Pittsburgh

The Rockies at Pirates game is only available on the main afternoon slate on FanDuel with both teams sitting right around four runs, putting both in the middle of the board for the six afternoon games. Kyle Freeland has increased his strikeout rate six points to just above league average (21.7%), but still has a below average 8.2 SwStr%. His splits are incredibly stark. He strikes out LHBs at an elite rate (27.8%), but with just a 34.6 GB% when they do make contact. Against RHBs, he has just a 2.7 K-BB%, but a 58.3 GB%. Considering the ground ball rate and power suppressing park, there are few desirable bats on this side and probably not enough strikeouts for Freeland with just one LHB in the lineup. A potential value play could be Sean Rodriguez (115 wRC+, .228 ISO, 48.4 Hard% vs LHP since last season), who costs just $2.4K at second base. Chad Kuhl is facing a Rockies' team with a 48 wRC+ and 2.4 Hard-Soft% vs RHP. He's a hard thrower who doesn't miss many bats though (7.6 SwStr%) and doesn't fool anybody (43.4 Z-O-Swing%). While the xwOBA is 30 points lower at .351 than his actual wOBA against LHBs since last season (.381), this is still a pitcher who struggles greatly with his platoon splits. Lefties have a 38.7 Hard% and 35.9 GB% against him and the park plays more neutral towards left-handed power. Charlie Blackmon (151 wRC+, .311 ISO, 41.1 Hard%) is in a great spot here and carries a 119 wRC+ on the road since last season. He has a 266 wRC+ over the last week. Carlos Gonzalez (104 wRC+, .195 ISO) afford some cheaper exposure to a left-handed bat here, but he has just a 41 wRC+ over the last week and 55 wRC+ on the road since last season.

Rob Zastryzny (41st pick in 2013) makes his first major league start in Pittsburgh

Rob Zastryzny was the 41st pick in the 2013 draft and rated as the 16th best prospect in the system by Fangraphs in January, citing inconsistencies in his delivery as a potential issue going forward, making him kind of a “feast or famine” arm. He had just average peripherals through to minor league levels this season (AA & AAA). All of his 12.1 major league innings have come in relief over the last month and half, mostly lasting just an inning, but occasionally going a bit more. There shouldn’t be much of an expectation for him here. The Pirates are a strong offense against LHP at home and could make him work, further shortening his outing, but they’re also a bit banged up from the RH side, missing several bats from their lineup tonight. Though there's generally a lack of upside in rostering RH Pittsburgh bats at home, Andrew McCutchen (130 wRC+, .183 ISO vs LHP since 2015) and Sean Rodriguez (159 wRC+, .240 ISO vs LHP this season) cost just above $3K on FanDuel, while David Freese (158 wRC+, .211 ISO vs LHP this season) and leadoff man Jordy Mercer (127 wRC+, .180 ISO vs LHP this season) cost less than $3K.

The reverse splits of Chase Anderson put Pirates RHB in an excellent spot

It's surprising that a late-September game between the Pirates and Brewers has the highest total of the night, but that's what happens we get a matchup of Ryan Vogelsong and Chase Anderson at Miller Park. Anderson is a fly ball (40.9%), reverse splits pitcher with a 4.68 SIERA and a 36.8% hard hit rate allowed. Those figures breakdown to a 40.6% Hard% versus right-handed batters compared to 31.7% against left-handed batters. We want to target the power righties in the Pittsburgh lineup here. Andrew McCutchen (.179 ISO vs RHP) and Jung Ho Kang (139 wRC+, .376 wOBA, .274 ISO vs RHP) are strong plays in this one. Anderson has been pretty good against left-handed batters, so avoiding Gregory Polanco seems wise in this situation. A full stack generally isn’t the best way to attack a massive fly ball pitcher, anyhow, so stick with the right-handed hitters like Starling Marte (126 wRC+, .357 wOBA, .157 ISO vs RHP) and Sean Rodriguez (122 wRC+, .352 wOBA, .267 ISO vs RHP).

Kang OUT against Thompson, but still two great low priced options at the top of Pirates order (Frazier, Bell)

Starling Marte, Francisco Cervelli, and Jung-Ho Kang are all now missing from today's lineup, which includes Sean Rodriguez, Eric Fryer and David Freese against a RHP instead of names like Joyce or Jaso, who might often get those spots against RHP. It's even more confusing considering that LHBs have a .388 wOBA against Jake Thompson so far in his young career. RHBs have hit the ball hard 37.1% of the time though, so they can really justify playing nearly anybody they want in this spot, but the most interesting bats are the cheap ones at the top of the lineup. Adam Frazier (118 wRC+, .174 ISO vs RHP) and Josh Bell (148 wRC+, .177 ISO vs RHP) will help you get to Jose Fernandez today and are more likely to help than hurt your lineup in a great spot while doing it. Especially on FanDuel, where each are $2.6K or less, at least one of these names if not both is a near necessity in your lineup if paying up for the most expensive pitcher.

Pirates have a 24.1% strikeout rate versus LHP

Paxton started off his season with huge strikeout totals in his first three starts, but then they pretty much disappeared for a stretch until his fantastic outing against the Blue Jays last time out. Paxton has posted 12.1% SwStr% so it's not all that surprising he has rediscovered his strikeout stuff. Whether or not it's sustainable, is an entirely different story as his highest SwStr% for a substantial stretch was only 8.0% in 2014 with the Mariners. The other numbers for Paxton are merely average with a 20.9% K% and 3.78 SIERA while limiting walks (6.1% BB%) and keeping the ball on the ground (51.1% GB%). Since Paxton has clearly shown his strikeout upside in past starts, he can definitely be considered in tournaments as the Pirates have a 24.1% K% versus left-handed pitching. If targeting any Pirates hitters, David Freese (171 wRC+, .421 wOBA, .266 ISO) and Sean Rodriguez (160 wRC+, .407 wOBA, .268 ISO) would be the top options since they've hit lefties extrememly well this season and have the pop to be worth a one-off play in tournaments.

Pirates are tied for the third-lowest implied run total on the slate (3.8)

The Pirates are pretty much an average offense as a whole versus LHP (107 wRC+, .328 wOBA, .152 ISO) but do strikeout at an above average clip (24.2% K%). Jaime Garcia (3.97 SIERA) doesn't have massive strikeout upside (19.7% K%) but is competent enough to take advantage of this Pirates lineup. Garcia is taking on a Pirates lineup filled with righties but it may not be the worst thing given the outstanding 61.2% GB% Garcia has versus RHB. With Garcia being an extreme ground ball pitcher, this is a situation where we want to stack or fade the Pirates offense as Garcia is unlikely to give up home runs in bunches. The Pirate hitters to stack in tournaments would be David Freese (161 wRC+, .408 wOBA, .233 ISO vs LHP), Jordy Mercer (155 wRC+, .400 wOBA, .210 ISO vs LHP), Jung Ho Kang (117 wRC+, .343 wOBA, .283 ISO vs LHP), and Sean Rodriguez (143 wRC+, .382 wOBA, .184 ISO vs LHP)
