Steven Souza Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Above Average Versus Lefties

Some of the slate's best value comes in the outfield on Friday as Souza represents another value outfielder with the platoon advantage. Souza is another guy that doesn't stand out as a great hitter but does have a slightly above average offensive skill-set against LHP for his career (106 wRC+). Context isn't great for Souza with this game being played at PetCo but I'm still fine using him as a value option in all formats.

Sneaky Spot For This Team

I think Cole Hamels has pitched well this season, and he's trending in the right direction since joining the Cubs. With that said, it's hard to ignore the price for Steven Souza tonight. Hamels still has a .330 wOBA with a .189 ISO and a massive 44% hard-hit rate against right-handed hitters this season, while Souza has a .190 ISO with a .537 CXwOBA against lefties. All eight projected starters for the Diamondbacks have hard-hit rates over 38% against lefties this season, and Souza leads the team with a 61.8% hard-hit rate.

Mini-Stacking overlooked game out west

There are a lot of good options to stack or mini stack tonight and I'm going to recommend an Arizona team I think will be somewhat overlooked. With 5 hitters carrying a .259 ISO vs the opposite hand the D Backs are in a great spot at what should be low ownership against Richard tonight in San Diego. While the ballpark is far from ideal it isn't nearly as bad as most think rating about average in the summer months for righty power. Tonight will be warm and humid which should help things as well. I don't think I would go crazy and 5 man stack this one but I do love picking 3 or 4 of these Diamondbacks as a mini stack against Richard and the Padres this evening. In order I would prioritize Pollock, Goldy, Marte, Souza then Ahmed. All make for nice 1 offs if you don't want to stack or mini stack this one.

These three RHBs are too good against southpaws to ignore

Joey Lucchesi is an above average pitcher by most metrics (25.1 K%, 3.79 SIERA) and he's pitching in one of the most negative run environments on the board tonight, but the middle of this Arizona lineup is just so potent against LHP, that they still need to be seriously considered tonight. A.J. Pollock (141 wRC+, .311 ISO), Paul Goldschmidt (157 wRC+, .307 ISO) and Steven Souza (163 wRC+, .286 ISO) all have dominant numbers against southpaws over the last calendar year. All are above a 40% hard hit rate as well, while Lucchesi has allowed RHBs a 42.5 Hard%.

He's...Bad

Forget about the humidor, the Diamondbacks enter Monday's slate with the highest implied run total on the board (5.1) in a favorable matchup against Rangers southpaw Martin Perez. Martin Perez is....bad. Perez has been allowing a *ton* of hard contact (44.7%), has a walk rate (9.7%) that almost matches his strikeout rate (12.8%) and owns a slate high 5.34 SIERA. DBacks hitters will be chalky so you may have to be creative if you want a truly unique lineup (bottom of the order stack, perhaps?) but this is undeniably a good spot for them.

Cheap top of the lineup bats for the afternoon slate

Some of the top overall bats may even be top values this afternoon, but there are several cheap or affordable bats near the top of some lineups today that should be of interest. All of the following hitters cost less than $4K on DraftKings. Rosell Herrera (91 wRC+, .065 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) costs just $3K in the second spot for the Royals against Matt Boyd (RHBs .334 wOBA since last season). On the other side, Danny Duffy has been better, but RHBs also still have a .334 wOBA against him since last year as well. Jeimer Candelario (127 wRC+, .195 ISO vs LHP) bats second. Ketel Marte (127 wRC+, .230 ISO vs LHP) also bats second against Jon Lester (RHBs .326 wOBA). Steven Souza Jr. (140 wRC+, .178 ISO vs LHP) bats fifth, but is still certainly interesting for less than $4K. Lester is not a pitcher players normally want to attack, but when the price is right, it is worth considering. Ketel and Souza Jr. are both below $3K on FanDuel as well as is Albert Almora Jr. (110 wRC+, .101 ISO vs LHP) across the field, who bats second against Robbie Ray (RHBs .310 wOBA, but 41.2 Hard% since 2017). Adam Eaton (149 wRC+, .122 ISO vs RHP) leads off for the Nationals against Freddy Peralta (LHBs .299 wOBA, 35 Hard%) for less than $3K as well.

Targeting Right-Handers with Platoon Advantage in Arizona Tonight

Like most left-handed pitchers, Kyle Freeland has a tougher time with right-handed hitters, allowing a higher on-base percentage (.340) and slugging percentage (.423) to righties in his career. That could lead to trouble against an Arizona team with a handful of right-handed hitters that hammer left-handed pitching. Paul Goldschmidt is the name that immediately comes to mind, with a .631 slugging percentage and 1.054 OPS against lefties this season, and AJ Pollock isn’t too far behind with a .619 slugging percentage and .962 OPS against southpaws. For some cost savings, Steven Souza is having a rough season so far with only a .296 slugging percentage, but has still hit lefties well this season with a .823 OPS in limited action.

Value and potency in the Arizona lineup

The Diamondbacks didn't do much against Eric Lauer last night, but get a shot at another questionable lefty in Joey Lucchesi, whom RHBs have just a .322 wOBA against, but also a .355 xwOBA and 41.5 Hard%. Arizona is implied for just 4.27 runs, but six of eight bats with at least a 119 wRC+ and .170 ISO against LHP over the last calendar year. Remove Ketel Marte (119 wRC+, .213 ISO) and Steven Souza (141 wRC+, .172 ) and the remaining four two through seven hitters are all above 135 wRC+ and .220 ISO. Paul Goldschmidt (188 wRC+, .400 ISO) and A.J. Pollock (149 wRC+, .333 ISO) are the only two RHBs batters in the lineup above $3.7K on DraftKings.

DL Suppression

Steven Souza returned from the DL on Thursday night and still has a suppressed price tag because of his prolonged absence - he's the absolute minimum on FanDuel ($2,000) and a mere $3,300 on DraftKings. Souza had a strong rehab stint, recording at least one hit in six starts and finished the stint with a two HR game on July 3rd. The biggest takeaway there is that Souza appears to be fully healthy and when healthy Souza is an above average offensive player - he owns a career 109 wRC+ and .162 ISO vs LHP.

One lineup is suddenly deep with proficient bats against LHP with the return of another one of their hitters

The Arizona suddenly looks a bit deeper, especially against LHP with both A.J. Pollock (146 wRC+, .336 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Steven Souza (148 wRC+, .180 ISO) a part of it. They join prominent lefty-masher Paul Goldschmidt (195 wRC+, .405 ISO) in an intended assault on Eric Lauer, against whom LHBs have a .387 wOBA and 41.6 Hard%. While Nick Ahmed (130 wRC+, .241 ISO) and John Ryan Murphy (141 wRC+, .298 ISO) have great results against southpaws as well, the former does so with a .329 xwOBA (33 points below actual), but still has some value at a low price point. The latter finds himself batting eight tonight.
