Fifteen minutes to roster lock, no major news to report ahead of Rocket Mortgage Classic
After a handful of player movement on Monday, there is no news to report ahead of round one of The Rocket Mortgage Classic. Stewart Cink and Harris English withdrew early in the week due to COVID-19. Cameron Champ was a late add to the field, but will not be available in pricing pools until round 2. After testing false positive for COVID last week, the Tour added Champ as the 157th golfer in this week's field. He will play the first two rounds as a single. Stewart Cink has withdrawn from The Wells Fargo Championship and will be replaced in the field by Derek Fathauer. Sites should have a salary for Fathauer in the next day or so. At this time there is no injury news associated with Cink's decision to skip this week's event.
Never Missed a Cut at this Event
Cink is known as a consistent golfer with limited upside. That’s basically how I see him this week, but we don’t need a top ten finish for him to pay off his cheap salary. A made cut will do the trick and anything in the top 30 will easily exceed salary-based expectations. He has played here seven times and he has yet to miss a cut. That sounds pretty good to me, especially for cash games. His recent form isn’t anything to write home about, but he does have three top five finishes on his resume since June.
Great Iron Player
Im missed the cut on the number last week, burning nearly 20% of the field in the process. While he let us down, there is no reason to be scared to target him again. Throughout his career on the Web.com Tour, he almost always bounced back from a missed cut with a strong finish. We saw that a few weeks ago on the PGA Tour, after posting a T15 at the Shriners after missing the cut at the Sanderson Farms. He hits a ton of fairways and is ranked 14th in this field in proximity. One missed cut on the number shouldn’t dissuade us from playing a golfer with a ton of upside.
Stewart Cink is a great source of value this week
With a few bigger names in this week's field, the demand for value plays that allows for a stars and scrubs roster construction increases significantly. Looking to post another solid start to his 2019 campaign former major winner Stewart Cink heads into this week as once such value option. Throughout his career, Cink has always been an accurate striker of the golf ball and has an overall game that should suit this course well. Reasonably priced across the industry this tested veteran has more than enough upside to pay off his salary, and evident by his play at last week's CIMB classic Cink could crush value with a top 15 or better finish.
Safe Play with Upside
The final pick of the week is a staple in this article when it comes to the swing season. Don’t worry, Charles Howell will be featured soon enough (although I do like him a bit this week). Cink isn’t the most accurate driver of the golf ball, but he has decent distance and he’s one of the best on tour with his irons. He’s ranked second in this field in strokes gained approach. He’s not a golfer that I expect to be in contention on Sunday, but a top 20-30 finish will easily pay off his salary. He’s a safe option that you can use in all formats.
Abraham Ancer plays his way into The BMW Championship
Looking to make the most of his second stint on the PGA Tour, Abraham Ancer played excellent golf this last week and was able to move inside the top 70 and earn a birth at The BMW Championship. DraftKings released it's player pool for this short week early on Tuesday morning, but has yet to add players like Ancer. If you are setting early week lineups please note that the field will be updated with both additions and subtractions. Players like Jimmy Walker did not qualify for the next event and will not play this week.
Stewart Cink playing his best golf at the right time
Poised and ready to make his deepest run into the FedEx Cup race since winning the 2010 British Open, Stewart Cink is clearly playing his best golf of the season at the right time. Cink enters this week having made six straight cuts including 3 top five or better finishes. Priced down in due to the strength of the field, Cink is standing out as a strong value play for The Northern Trust. Even though the course routing will be different than it has been in the past, Cink has two top 15 or better finishes in his three tries at Ridgewood C.C., so one would assume he likes what he sees in this traditional golf course. In what is shaping up to be a ball strikers course, Cink has the game deserving of a consideration as a value play with upside for the Northern Trust.
