Sungjae Im Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Improving Form Brings Upside

Like Matsuyama, Im also went through a rough stretch after the restart. The good news is that those struggles also seem to be a thing of the past for Im. His approach play was very strong at the Tour Championship and the U.S. Open, and he closed out last week’s event with one of the best rounds of the day on Sunday. A lot of that was buoyed by a hot putter, but it is clear that Im is gaining confidence right now. It also helps that he has seen TPC Summerlin before, finishing 15th here in his debut two years ago. With the form improving and ownership likely not through the roof here, I’m a buyer on Im in GPP formats.

This Man Loves Golf and Loves Bermuda

Will Zalatoris has been terrific since the restart. He hasn’t finished outside of the top 15 on the Korn Ferry Tour and has posted back-to-back top 10s on the PGA Tour. I’m certainly buying his stock long-term, but I’ll side with the more proven commodity in Im this week if choosing between the two. And honestly, you can fit both into lineups on FanDuel and DraftKings without much hassle. Sungjae’s game has been up and down since the restart, but he seems to be trending upward after a T11 at the Tour Championship and a T22 at the U.S. Open. Over those two events, he gained 10.2 strokes on approach (which is what he was struggling with the last few months). He’s long played his best on bermuda courses and we have one on our hands this week in Mississippi. Im played here last year and nearly took it down, ultimately finishing second to Sebastian Munoz.

The Webb of this Week?

Im missed the cut last week and it wasn't particularly close. The best part is that he was out there on the driving range on Saturday with everyone that made the cut. He had nothing else to do, so why not sharpen the game after a missed cut. He's becoming a DFS legend and I fully expect him to bounce back in a big way, especially since he lost 4.4 strokes putting. His level of consistency is nearly unmatched, as he's made 24 of his last 27 cuts with 18 top 30 finishes during that stretch. In his debut at TPC River Highlands, he finished in a tie for 21st. Look for him to improve on that finish this week.

First Win In The Works?

Sungjae Im is going to be an elite player on the PGA Tour for a long time. He faded in the final round in Hawaii last week, but that can be forgiven thanks to the horrible weather conditions and soaking rain. That will not be enough to dampen his potential. Let’s see if I can find some more rain puns. In any case, Im checks in as an elite option in this field. He finished 12th here in his debut last year. He has finished inside the top 25 in half of his career PGA Tour starts. He ranks above field average this year in basically every statistical category. That includes a ranking of 13th in birdie or better percentage and 20th in proximity on approach. There is almost nothing to complain about with his game — and he’s only 21 years of age. He already has a runner-up finish and a third place finish so far this year — don’t be surprised if a win comes sooner rather than later.

Taking a Stroll Down Narrative Lane

Do I feel great about targeting an over-priced and an over-owned Sungjae Im this week? Not exactly, but I’m taking a stroll down narrative street. Im not only grew up in South Korea, but he grew up playing this course. It was essentially his home course for many years. He wasn’t great at this event last season, but he finished the week with 19 birdies and an eagle. He’s clearly in better form this time around, as he has posted top 20 finishes in four of his last five events. He’s been so close to picking up his first win on tour, so how fitting would it be in his home town at a course he great up playing? Even though his ball striking numbers don’t quite match up to the other golfers priced around him, he’s elite on and around the greens and he’s ranked fifth in this field in birdie or better percentage. I am willing to eat the chalk given his comfort level at this course and plan to differentiate my lineups elsewhere.

Home Game Narrative

I like Justin Thomas as my favorite overall play, but I will side with the “home game” narrative with Sungjae Im as my favorite point per dollar play. He is obviously more familiar with this course than anyone else in the field having grown up on Jeju Island, and his current form is trending toward that breakthrough win on Tour. His game is solid all the way through his bag, and he should be rested and ready to go after skipping last week’s event in Houston in order to get home sooner. He already has a runner up finish and another top 20 on the fall swing, and I’ll be rooting for him to hoist some hardware in his native town. That would be a fantastic story.

Sungjae Im looks to bounce back from consecutive missed cuts

With a handful of strong finishes early in the year, PGA Tour rookie Sunjae Im has already made an impact on tour. Currently ranked inside the top 30 in the FedEx Cup race Im has an outside shot to make a deep run in the playoffs. Entering this week looking to make a bounce back from poor showings in his last two events, Im ranks well in our projection model in terms of Pt/$/K. Priced down in this strong field, Im has a good shot of posting a great week in terms of a high upside point per dollar play. While he is nowhere safe for cash games, Im has shown the propensity to play well enough to absolutely crush his price for the week. Muirfield Village is a second shot course that should fit Im's game, and could be a great spot to get his game back on track.

Best Statistics of Any Golfer in the Field

This is one of those weeks where I don’t feel great about anyone at the top of the board. I will have shares of Koepka, Matsuyama, Stenson, and Leishman in my MME builds, but I will be starting my main lineup with Im. He is a statistical darling, ranking 13th or better in this field in strokes gained total, off the tee, approach, opportunities, birdie or better percentage, and bogey avoidance. A lack of course history is typically a negative for golfers, but Trinity Forest has only been in the rotation for one year and it’s expected to be a much different course this time around with all of the rain in the forecast. Im is going to break through soon and this could very well be the week.

Back To The Grind

Sungjae Im was forced to take a week off thanks to not receiving a Masters invite, so he should be refreshed and ready to go after taking basically just one week off during a three month stretch this winter. While his statistical ranks don’t quite pop off the page like Simpson’s do, Im still ranks 52nd or better in driving accuracy, strokes gained around the green, and scrambling. That’s impressive in its own right, especially when you consider that he is only 21 years old. I worry a little bit about this being his first trip to Harbour Town, but that hasn’t slowed him down on other tracks. He’s a quick learner and should be in the mix once again.

Best Golfer in the Field

Im is the class of the field this week and will likely be the highest owned golfer in DFS. The model that I build each week rates golfers from 1-100. Im has a score of 99.8 with the next closes being Jhonattan Vegas at 91.0. In this field, Im is ranked sixth or better in strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained approach, birdie or better percentage, opportunities gained, and bogey avoidance. He’s also strong on and around the greens. The only argument against him is that he has been playing a ton of golf recently and that he might be looking forward to bigger tournaments on the PGA Tour. I don’t see that as a good enough reason to fade him, especially at this price point.
