Big discount on young Vancouver defenseman
For whatever reason, Derrick Pouliot's price has plunged from $4,300 on 11/13 to $2,700 tonight on DraftKings. Perhaps it's his six consecutive games without a point, all of which came on the road, that is the reason for the price drop. Whatever the reason may be, such a price tag on a defenseman seeing top power play minutes with super talent Elias Pettersson has to be taken advantage of. Pouliot is still reasonable on FanDuel ($3,700), but there are other guys roughly $1,000 more (e.g. Thomas Chabot, Ryan Ellis, Oscar Klefbom, Seth Jones) that rate as better plays. Vancouver is surprisingly averaging 3.57 goals per game on home ice and will get a crack at Carey Price, who despite turning in a gem last time out, has really struggled on the season. As always with someone like Pouliot, temper your expectations, but his price is really attractive now that he's back on home ice against a beatable opponent.
Can Chabot stay this hot?
Thomas Chabot is leading all defensemen in points with five goals and 17 assists. We all know that Ottawa is not a good defensive team as they have given up 67 goals on the season but, the 55 they have scored is good enough for third most in the Eastern Conference. The only problem here may be the fact that the Senators lost to the Lightning in overtime on home ice last Sunday so now with the change of venue Tampa will surely have the edge. Tampa opened as a -300 favorite with and o/u total of 6 ½ goals. This is right on the mark as far as I am concerned but it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for these teams to duplicate last Sunday’s score. FanDuel still has him very cheap at $4,700 while his salary of $6,200 over on DraftKings is much closer to his production.
The future is now with Erik Karlsson gone
With Erik Karlsson in San Jose, the future of the Ottawa blue line rests in Thomas Chabot, the number 18 pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Chabot tallied 25 points in 63 games last season while averaging 17:31 of ice time. He will play a bigger role this season and has already logged 21-plus minutes in each of the Senators' first two contests. Last time out, Thomas tormented Toronto with two goals and an assist to go along with five shots on goal. While the road matchup with Boston is intimidating, this kind of ceiling is hard to find in this tier of defensemen. Chabot is a salivating $3,900 on FanDuel and $4,500 on DraftKings. While the ceiling game is unlikely here, Chabot is a solid two way defensemen that can contribute with shots and blocks. Fire him up in tournaments.
This defenseman will benefit from Erik Karlsson being out
While it didn't come to fruition in the last game without Erik Karlsson, Thomas Chabot is still in a great spot once again tonight. He's playing on the top power play unit and likely to see 20+ minutes of ice-time. The Ottawa Senators are in Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins and while this is a difficult matchup, Chabot is a relatively cheap option considering the role he will be playing. Over his last 10 games, Chabot has picked up five points, 17 blocks and 17 shots on goal which has been a solid three DraftKings points per game over that stretch.
Dirt-cheap defenseman takes on NHL's worst team
Erik Karlsson will not be making the road trip to Buffalo, so as has been the case over the last couple weeks, Thomas Chabot is an excellent source of saving salary. Naturally, the issue is dropping down from Alex Pietrangelo and Rasmus Ristolainen, but roster restrictions may force players this way. Chabot flashed his upside last time out, posting two goals and a helper in a tough matchup against the Jets. With Karlsson out, Chabot should see north of 20 minutes and ample time on the power play. Even if Chabot doesn't find the scoresheet, he should be good for a couple shots and a block or two. At $3,900 on FanDuel and DraftKings, Thomas is a wonderful way to save some salary.
This rookie has seen his game progress nicely over the course of the season
Thomas Chabot has certainly seen his game progress nicely over the course of the season. His offence is slowly starting to pick up too. Over his last 10 games, Chabot has two goals, five points, 10 blocks and 17 shots as well as averaging two more minutes per game of ice time. All of those are higher than his season long averages. He is spending time on the second power play unit and if the Senators are serious about moving Erik Karlsson in the offseason, Chabot should be seeing even more time, including on the power play.
Low-owned Ottawa defenseman seeing increased role
Now that Dion Phaneuf is enjoying the warm California weather, Ottawa needs some defenseman to take on an increased role. So far, it appears to be rookie Thomas Chabot. While Chabot has a modest 15 points in 39 games, his minutes have been restricted (16:05 TOI/game). Last time out against the Nashville Predators, Thomas logged nearly 21 minutes of ice time, by far the most this month. The game prior to that, Chabot collected his first career multi-point game as he potted a goal and an assist against the New York Rangers. Although Ottawa has struggled on the road, their opponent has struggled a lot defensively without Corey Crawford guarding the crease. If you need salary relief, take a chance on Thomas Chabot, especially in tournaments.
Young defense-man oozes offensive upside at a bargain price-point
As one of Ottawa's top young prospects, hopes were quite high for Thomas Chabot as he entered training camp. However, after failing to leave a lasting impression in his few chances this preseason, he was unexpectadely sent to start the season with the AHL's Belleville Senators. Chabot responded with a goal and an assist in his only two appearances there and that's all it took for the Ottawa Front office to change their mind and return him to the big club. While he'll still have to wait to benefit from skating alongside Erik Karlsson (who's still sidelined), Chabot should immediately step into 20+ minutes of work tonight against the Vancouver Canucks. He posted 10 goals and 35 assists in just 34 games last season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (and added five goals and 18 assists in 18 playoff games) which highlights his offensive upside.
