Joshua Kelley, Joe Reed and Troymaine Pope are inactive Sunday. Joshua Kelley is the most notable, although he was still projected behind Austin Ekeler and Kalen Ballage. Instead, Justin Jackson should work as the third back, and he is a threat to steal some of Ballage's work.
Chargers activate Austin Ekeler
The Chargers activated Austin Ekeler, clearing the path for him to play Sunday, and potentially giving Justin Herbert a dynamic weapon out of the backfield. Ekeler had returned to practice earlier this week, but coach Anthony Lynn previously sounded skeptical about Ekeler's availability for Sunday. While Ekeler is now eligible to play, his status will still need to be confirmed when inactives are released prior to kickoff. If he is playing, he should return to near his normal role, which will cut significantly into Kalen Ballage's work.

Troymaine Pope is officially active Sunday after being listed as questionable. Having Pope active just makes it harder to read this RB situation, as Joshua Kelley and Kalen Ballage both will also get work as well.

Keenan Allen was cleared to play earlier Sunday, and now he is officially active. He was questionable with an illness that has been reported as a sore throat. He should handle his usual workload, but little is known about the extent of his sickness. Troymaine Pope is also inactive for the Chargers.

Head coach Anthony Lynn disclosed to reporters on Thursday that Pope had cleared the NFL's concussion protocol, but the Chargers appear to be taking a cautious approach and have listed him as doubtful on the injury report for Sunday's Week 9 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders after taking a significant hit to the head just five days ago. Pope surprisingly saw 29% of the running back snaps, 10 carries, and seven targets in Week 8 prior to leaving with the aforementioned concussion, so his likely absence is certainly a boon to the projected fantasy value of Joshua Kelley, who had been demoted to third into the backfield pecking order in that contest. However, Justin Jackson has consistently been the lead back in Chargers offense since Austin Ekeler went down with an injury, making him the preferred option of the two in a vacuum for daily fantasy formats across the industry this weekend.
