James Johnson will play Sunday; Wes Iwundu ruled out

The Pelicans had two players questionable, and will only get one back as they prepare to play the Los Angeles Lakers. Johnson was cleared to play, while Iwundu will miss his second game in a row. The Pelicans are prioritizing their youth, so it may not be too many minutes for Johnson. With no Lonzo, Ingram, Zion, and Adams, it should be plenty of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Kira Lewis, Naji Marshall, and Wenyen Gabriel, with Jaxson Hayes and Willy Hernangomez splitting the center minutes.

Brandon Ingram, Steven Adams, Wes Iwundu ruled out Friday; Naji Marshall available

Brandon Ingram, Steven Adams, and Wes Iwundu have all been ruled out for Friday while Naji Marshall will be available when the Pelicans take on the Golden State Warriors. The Pelicans will be down to nine players for tonight's game and all of the available bodies will likely see some run and offer some value. The Pelicans offense will likely be run through Alexander-Walker, Eric Bledsoe, and James Johnson with Willy Hernangomez and Jaxson Hayes seeing the majority of the big man minutes.

Lineup Update: Pelicans will start Bledsoe, Iwundu, Ingram, Zion, Adams on Monday; Naji Marshall to the bench. Marshall had a nice performance on Sunday as a starter, but the Pels will give Wes Iwundu a shot to roll with the starters on Tuesday. We still don't expect Iwundu to play much, and he's not a DFS option. His presence in the starting lineup does take Marshall completely out of play.

Status update: James Johnson and Wes Iwundu available to make Pelicans debut Saturday

Johnson and Iwundu were both traded from the Mavericks, and now will have a chance to take on their former team with the Pelicans. Neither player should play heavy minutes as coach Stan Van Gundy runs tight rotations and has most of his key players healthy.

Wes Iwundu (neck) officially out Friday

As expected, Iwundu has been downgraded from doubtful and won't play in Friday's restart opener against the Brooklyn Nets due to neck stiffness he began experiencing following a concussion he sustained in Saturday's scrimmage. However, Iwundu was never a lock for significant playing time in the Magic's rotation with the return of Jonathan Isaac, and it should still be expected for Terrence Ross and Michael Carter-Williams to handle a majority of the reserve wing minutes off the bench in this afternoon's contest.

$3,000 Punt Starting

It's rare that we get a $3,000 player starting and today we get that. I understand this isn't the sexiest game on the slate but Iwundu is really only $3,000. I don't want to overlook that at all here. Iwundu may not be a high usage guy but he's only $3,000 and sees a usage bump and a .12 fantasy point per minute bump with Vuc. and Gordon off the court. I know it's a small sample but Iwundu is a salary guy that you want to consider in cash and tournaments.

Iwundu has been upgraded from questionable on the most recent version of the Magic's injury report and will be available to play Saturday’s matchup against the Indiana Pacers despite dealing with a right quad contusion. Evan Fournier missed Friday’s practice because of an illness but is fully expected to play in tonight's contest, so assuming he isn’t limited, he should see his typical minute allotment of 30-35 minutes this evening. As for Iwundu, he’s also seen an uptick in playing time following the departure of Jonathon Simmons to Philadelphia via trade and has logged at least 22 minutes in each of the Magic’s previous three games. However, Iwundu remains an extremely low-usage player (13.9%) and is averaging just 0.63 DraftKings and 0.64 FanDuel points per minute on the season, eliminating him from fantasy consideration on a near-nightly basis.

Jonathon Simmons will start ahead of Wesley Iwundu on Monday

Head coach Steve Clifford has finally opted to make a change to his starting lineup for Monday's matchup against the Golden State Warriors and will start Jonathan Simmons at small forward, which will send Wesley Iwundu to the bench to resume a reserve role. Iwundu has been a nominal starter at the three-spot and only recently eclipsed the 20-minute mark with the Magic fully healthy before being limited to just five minutes in Sunday's win. Simmons essentially swapped roles with Iwundu in that contest, and he logged 25 minutes off the bench en route to exceeding salary-based expectations. This makes Simmons an intriguing punt option in tournaments considering he owns a 21.8% usage rate and is averaging 0.75 DraftKings and 0.76 FanDuel points per minute this season.
