This week Joe Cistaro breaks down the course and golf betting tips for the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open. Here’s a closer look at golf odds across sportsbooks.

The PGA Tour moves across the pond this week for a co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour. The Genesis Scottish Open returns to the Renaissance Club for the fourth year in a row. Min Woo Lee defends but finds an immensely stronger field. With The Open Championship just around the corner, players look to prep for the coastal links environment. Let’s start with Scottish Open betting odds.

Here are the recent winners of The Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club:

Prior to 2019, the Scottish Open was played at different courses, so I don’t see much in including the winners. The last three contests culminated in playoffs, with Min Woo Lee outlasting Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry last year. Further, the field of the Scottish Open has never been stronger, with the partnership between the PGA and DP World Tour bringing plenty of the world’s best to Scotland this week.

Fourteen of the top 15 players in the world will tee it up at the Renaissance Club on Thursday. Rory McIlroy is the only member from the top 15 absent from the field. With the PGA and DP World Tour co-sanctioning the event, half of the 150 player field will be from the PGA and the other half from DP. More cash will be up for grabs as well as FedEx Cup points. Let’s take a peek at the course and preview the tournament.

2022 Scottish Open Betting Preview

The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, designed by Tom Doak in 2008, is a typical coastal European parkland design. With undulating fairways that are firm and fast, players will need to keep the ball in play off the tee to avoid brutally long fescue rough.

Water is not a major concern on the course but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any beach parties. 82 bunkers defend the course with all of the greens defended by challenging bunkers. For a good hole-by-hole breakdown of the course, read Padraig Harrington’s “breakdown”:https://www.europeantour.com/dpworld-tour/rolex/news/articles/detail/genesis-scottish-open-the-renaissance-club-hole-by-hole-guide-by-padraig-harring/.

The main defense of the course is the weather with prevailing coastal winds making play very difficult on competitors. At the time of this writing, the winds seem to be pretty docile with a breath of wind on Friday and Sunday. Heavy winds seem to dissipate before play begins. Of course, be sure to check in if making any last minute bets or “DFS”:www.rotogrinders.com lineup adjustments.

The greens are immense – the tenth largest players will see this year. That said, greens in regulation might not be as important as proximity to the hole or some opportunities gained metric. Assuming players can find good position off the tee, they will need to keep it close to avoid dreaded 3-putts.

As ever with coastal links courses, scrambling will be paramount. Often, around-the-green player favors lower shots such as bump-and-run chips and long putting lags off of the fairway-lined greens. Players who struggled around tradition greens on tour might be neutralized a bit because putting around the greens could take a few clubs out of hand. That said, experience on this style of course will be important.

Finally, if the weather continues to be calm and friendly, strokes gained off the tee will be even more important. I don’t mind looking at some of the better and longer drivers of the golf ball as the reward could be several wedges in hand.

The course is not a traditional 71. Instead, there are four Par 5’s. An extra Par 3 makes up the difference of one stroke. Players will surely need to take advantage of the Par 5’s. The history at this course shows if the weather is nice, scoring can be had. With the class of this field, the winning score could certainly be greater than 20 strokes under par.

Let’s start our card with some outright picks.

2022 Scottish Open Betting Picks

Unless mentioned otherwise, all strokes gained statistics will be referenced over the player’s previous 36 rounds on the PGA Tour.

Viktor Hovland +3500 (Caesars)

Hovland’s last start… not great. Missing the cut at the U.S. Open was not the type of form we are looking for out of the budding superstar. That said, are we that surprised? Brookline Country Club was an overwhelming challenge and tested every aspect of a player’s game… including the short game.

Hovland’s struggles around the green are glaring. An otherwise elite talent, Hovland transforms into a different player when tasked with a flop shot or bunker save opportunity. So, why? Well, this type of layout might be the perfect elixir for someone with struggles on traditional tour layouts. The greens are massive and Hovland’s putting is not horrendous. He can utilize a putter off the green and access different types of shots that aren’t required out of long rough.

Further, there is no denying the ballstriking capacity of Viktor Hovland. If the weather is calm, Hovland will take advantage of an exceptional game off the tee and approach shots second to nobody.

We don’t know what type of motivation all of these players bring to this field. Will this be an Open Championship tune-up? For that reason, I feel comfortable starting my card with the value on this number. We haven’t seen Viktor at 35/1 in quite some time. We head to Caesars Sportsbook to open with one unit.

Lucas Herbert +6500 (DraftKings)

Lucas Herbert, taking up residence on the DP World Tour, has made several appearances on the PGA Tour over the last couple of years. His forays on Tour make something clear… the man can roll the golf ball.

Averaging 1.7 putts per GIR on the DP World Tour, Herbert leads the field on his PGA only SG: Putting stats over his last 24 rounds on Tour. Obviously, those numbers do not tell the full story but his recent 13th at the PGA Championship leaves a lot to get excited about.

Most recently, he finished T9th at the Irish Open. With a stacked field, we get a bit of value on Herbert this week. If the weather ends up getting wonky, the elite short game of Herbert could keep him in play. We will add Herbert for 0.6 units at DraftKings.

Robert MacIntyre +8000 (PointsBet)

Who didn’t see this coming? The Scot surely must be motivated to win his national open.

We’ve used Bobby Mac often at major championships as a finisher and in DFS lineups. A home game for MacIntyre ahead of The Open Championship feels like the perfect alignment.

This is not to say that MacIntyre is a slouch. He boasts back-to-back Top 10’s at The Open Championship. We know he understands this course and its playing conditions very well.

I am willing to take a stab on MacIntyre and his experience with a boost in motivation. He has shown recently in interviews how much playing on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour means to him. We know going in how important a win would be at the Renaissance Club. We will add MacIntyre for .45 units.

Thomas Detry +18000 (DraftKings)

Finally, we arrive at our first bomb. Thomas Detry of the DP World Tour is a big time longshot this week. Yet, didn’t Detry finish second in a playoff last year?

Sure, the field was not as strong. Put the torches down. That said, Detry knows this course and can clearly play well. Last year, the winds held off and Detry was able to put together a great tournament.

At this price, I we aren’t betting enough to get carried away with statistics. A second-place finish is all I need to include Detry this week. We include Detry for a pittance, .2 units.

The Scottish Open Betting Card

Golfer Bet To Win
Viktor Hovland 1 unit 35 units
Lucas Herbert 0.6 units 39 units
Robert MacIntyre .45 units 36 units
Thomas Detry 0.2 units 36 units

Net Units John Deere Classic: +33.35 units

2022 Profit in Units: +68.675 units
