This afternoon, P.J. Walker and the Cleveland Browns will travel to play Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks. Entering play, both teams are 4-2 and in second place in their respective division. Kickoff is set for 4:05 p.m. ET on FOX later this afternoon.
Ahead of kickoff in this matchup, oddsmakers have priced the Seahawks as 4-point favorites on the spread. The total for this contest is set at over/under 39 points.
Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.
Cleveland Browns
What to expect from P.J. Walker
P.J. Walker was abysmal last week against the Indianapolis Colts, completing only 15-of-32 pass attempts for 178 yards through the air. According to PFF, Walker was 10-for-24 from a clean pocket for only 5.2 yards per attempt – staggeringly poor numbers from an NFL starting quarterback.
Miraculously, Cleveland scored 39 points despite being out-gained by 140 yards for the afternoon. Indianapolis averaged 2.4 yards per play more than Cleveland and had more first downs than Cleveland, but four turnovers and a few questionable calls at the end of the game were enough to sway the outcome.
Through two games, Walker has proven completely incapable of doing even the bare minimum that is required of a starting signal caller. There is little, if any, evidence to support a strong showing from him in Week 8.
Browns defense vulnerable?
Prior to last week, the Browns’ defense was the only unit in the entire NFL to generate at least a 30.0% pressure rate in each of their first five games to begin the season. That changed in Week 7 against the Colts, with the Browns finishing 7th-worst among all teams in defensive pressure rate at 21.4%.
A Gardner Minshew-led Indianapolis offense torched Cleveland’s vaunted defense for 6.8 yards per play. Minshew had 305 passing yards and the Colts added another 168 yards on the ground. Linebacker Sione Takitaki is officially listed as questionable for this afternoon’s contest, which only further complicates the game plan for this group if he is unable to play.
Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith poised for strong showing on Sunday
Entering play on Sunday, Geno Smith ranks 10th in passer rating from a clean pocket and 7th in passer rating when under pressure, according to PFF. Despite scoring only 33 points total across the last two weeks, the Seattle offense has played well. The Seahawks had 384 yards of total offense in a loss to the Bengals and 318 yards of total offense last weekend against the Cardinals. Seattle’s 5.5 yards per play this fall ranks 12th best among all NFL teams. Even against a strong Cleveland defense, this unit should be able to move the football reasonably well.
Jamal Adams listed as questionable
Jamal Adams missed the first five weeks of the season due to injury but has made a big difference for this group since returning to the field. From Week 1 to Week 5, the Seahawks ranked 14th in defensive EPA/play and 17th in defensive success rate. Across the last two weeks, Seattle’s defense ranks 2nd in EPA/play and 6th in success rate.
Adams is officially listed as questionable for this afternoon’s affair, making his status worth monitoring throughout the afternoon. However, his full participation in Friday’s practice makes it more likely than not that he takes the field.
Browns vs. Seahawks – Picks & Predictions
The Cleveland Browns defense has played at a historical level to begin 2023, but bettors saw some of their vulnerabilities last weekend against the Indianapolis Colts. The best defenses in the NFL have trouble consistently getting off of the field when their offense is a complete disaster, which is what we saw last week from P.J. Walker. Cleveland allowed 28 points to the Baltimore Ravens with Deshaun Watson on the sidelines and 38 points to the Colts in a similar situation. Traveling across the country for today’s action, they are going to find it difficult to hold Seattle to fewer than 21 points.
PICK: Seahawks Over 20.5 Points – Team Total (-125, Fanatics Sportsbook)
