How are you handling the “OR” spots for starters on the depth chart in Week 0?
headChopper: It’s tough and not fun to see those “OR” listings on the depth chart, but this is where you have to trust your research. So much of it is just gamesmanship from coaches – either not wanting to tip their real starters to the opposition or trying to motivate their own players so they don’t get complacent with job security. If I have a strong feel about a player, I’ll disregard the “OR” and play them regardless.
MrTuttle05: Mostly ignoring. Western Kentucky and Sam Houston State sent out obvious troll depth charts, so there isn’t a whole lot to analyze there. The only real important “OR” situation is with Kansas at WR, with Doug Emilien OR Cam Pickett and Keaton Kubecka OR Levi Wentz. Based on camp reports, I am fairly confident that Pickett is WR2, while the Kubecka vs. Wentz situation is a bit murkier, but I have Wentz projected slightly higher.
stlcardinals84: You have to take these Week 0 depth charts with a grain of salt. College coaches aren’t forced to do anything on this front, and we have essentially useless data from both Sam Houston State and Western Kentucky. We have to rely on reports from beat writers in the case of transfers/freshmen and past-season data in the case of returning players. I’ll be underweight on players from the teams that haven’t given us anything to utilize, but ownership is likely going to be low on the whole for that very reason. There could be slate breakers on these teams, so I will scour news leading up to lock to see if anything looks firm.
Jordan Vanek: There’s one “OR” situation that really captures how I’m approaching these spots heading into Week 0, and it comes down to research. In college football, rotations are far more common than in the NFL, so I weigh a few key factors: the camp buzz, whether a player is a transfer, and when he arrived compared to the competition. At Kansas, Cam Pickett and Levi Wentz are listed as “OR” on the depth chart, but I believe they’ll settle in as key WRs alongside Emmanuel Henderson Jr. In Week 0, I don’t expect either to have a high route share, but when they are on the field, they’ll have chances to make an impact. Wentz, for example, profiles as a red-zone fade option with his basketball background. Even if he only runs about 60% of the routes, I think those snaps will come in scoring situations, giving him splash-play potential.
What’s your hot take for Week 0?
headChopper: Jalon Daniels runs for the 100-yard bonus.
