CheeseIsGood's Million Dollar Musings: Wednesday, April 4th
MAIN SLATE PITCHING
It’s not as pretty on the pitching side tonight, but we’ve still got a couple strong options. There is one clear choice in my mind, followed by a two-man second tier, and then a couple of stragglers.
Jon Gray at Padres – Even with San Diego not being as much of a cakewalk for strikeouts this season, they are still a team to pick on with right-handed pitching. While they’ve added a little contact to their order, there is still very little they can do to cause a lot of trouble for their opposition. The lack of power in this lineup, especially with a banged up Wil Myers, is immediately noticeable. Jon Gray didn’t have a great opening start, but looking at his 2017 numbers, there is a lot to be excited about. He posted a 24.3% strikeout rate along with low 6.5% walks and a solid 49% ground ball rate while limiting hard contact. He was all the way up at a 30% strikeout rate against right-handed bats while keeping the ground balls and soft contact up against lefties. There is just very little downside with this skill set in this matchup. If he were the highest priced pitcher on this slate, I’d be locking him in for cash games, and it’s a very easy play at his salary. Even at likely high ownership, he’ll be my top GPP option as well.
