Tonight, the Kansas Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will play Super Bowl 58 to determine this year’s NFL Champion. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ahead of kickoff in this matchup, oddsmakers have priced the 49ers as 2-point favorites on the spread. The total for this contest is set at over/under 47.5 points.
Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.
Kansas City Chiefs
Mahomes, Chiefs looking to achieve dynasty status
Tonight, Patrick Mahomes has a chance to win his 3rd Super Bowl championship in only his 6th season as a starter – an extraordinarily rare feat. Also in his windshield is the potential to cement his Chiefs as a modern-era dynasty, with a win representing their 3rd championship in the last 5 years.
Mahomes has been at his best during the playoffs in his career, and this year’s postseason has been no different. Facing a San Francisco defense that has allowed 52 points in their last two games, Kansas City should be able to move the ball well in this contest.
Kansas City defense trending in the right direction
Though the Browns and Ravens both earned an abundance of headlines for their strong defenses during the regular season, it is the Chiefs defense that is still alive and standing in the Super Bowl. Kansas City’s defense has continued to be sensational during the playoffs, holding the Dolphins to 7 points, the Bills to 24 points, and the Ravens to 10 points in three victories.
Facing a young quarterback making his first Super Bowl appearance, experience definitely favors the Chiefs in this spot.
San Francisco 49ers
Mr. Irrelevant looks to quiet doubters on NFL’s biggest stage
Brock Purdy, a former 7th-round draft selection by the 49ers, is on the verge of NFL history. Following back-to-back wins against the Packers and Lions to begin these playoffs, Purdy is now 4-0 as a starter in postseason games when he does not exit early due to injury.
This evening, the much-maligned Purdy will have a chance to quiet his doubters once and for all as he goes toe-to-toe with Mahomes and the vaunted Chiefs defense. Purdy has been inconsistent during San Francisco’s current run to the Super Bowl, but he has been nearly perfect in the second-half of games, as his team has been forced to erase early deficits. He is capable of competing at a high level on the biggest stage on Sunday.
Concerns for San Francisco defense?
The 49ers play an extremely-high rate of zone coverage as a team, which could be problematic this evening against Mahomes and the Chiefs. During the regular season, the Chiefs ranked 16th in touchdown% against man coverage compared to 7th in touchdown% against zone coverage. The Chiefs were better by almost every offensive metric against zone coverage than they were against man coverage, including a completion rate that was 11.1% better against zone.
During the regular season, San Francisco played the 5th-lowest rate of man coverage of any defense in the entire NFL. In two postseason games, they have played less man coverage than any team by a wide margin.
Chiefs vs. 49ers – Picks & Predictions
It is not often that Patrick Mahomes is an underdog, and when he has been an underdog, it typically has not gone well for his opponents. Mahomes and company are 2-0 SU and ATS as an underdog once again during these playoffs, and they have a chance to win as an underdog again in the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs have the better quarterback, the better defense, and the more accomplished head coach in this matchup. Expect them to take care of business in Las Vegas this evening.
